The Philippine Specialty Board of Endocrinology & Metabolism (PSBEM), with its chair, Dr. Joselynna A. Quimpo, and members Drs. Ruby T. Go, Elizabeth Paz-Pacheco, Leilani Mercado-Asis and Sjoberg A. Kho, gave the certifying examination for diplomates in endocrinology on July 17 & 18. PSEM thanks the PSBEM and the past presidents and other members of the board who served as oral examiners. Their hard work and dedication upholds the high standard and integrity of the accreditation process. 2 Page2 Weekend Workshop on Prediabetes in Puerto Princesa, Palawan The second PSEM workshop on Prediabetes, Diabetes & the Metabolic Syndrome took place on July 3, 2010 at the Legend Hotel in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. The workshop was in coordination with the local chapter of Diabetes Philippines, headed by Dr. Rosalie Reyes. The well received theme was Putting Premium on Prevention. One hundred thirty six physicians and nurses were registered. For the first time, Bien actually spoke to a full house at 8:30 am. The Palawan group was not only prompt, but attentive, interactive and stayed through the last session. The attraction may not only have been the strength of the scientific program though, at the end of the closing ceremonies, our colleague, Dr. Sjoberg Kho was mobbed for photo ops like a rock star! The attraction of the Underground River was too much to pass up for Levy (a second timer) and first timers Lani, Tish, Pia and Victor. It was a weekend to remember, with a good mix of work, good food, and good friends celebrating the natural beauty of the Philippines. In the afternoon, a lay forum was also conducted alongside with the Abbott Wellness Screening. There were 87 patients who were also interactive with the sessions. Nemie practically ended up doing ambush physical exam and consults for those who came up to him after the program.

3 Page3 PSEM PARTICIPATES IN UNITE FOR DIABETES PSEM President, Lani Asis, attended the meeting of the Unite for Diabetes. The association of major stakeholders in diabetes care in the Philippines also includes Diabetes Philipppines (DP), Institute for the Study of Diabetes, Inc (ISDFI) and Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation (PCDEF). The group was loosely organized four years ago during the presidency of Dr. Jojo Raboca. Since PSEM s hardworking and committed representatives to the Technical Review Committee are Drs. Cecile Jimeno, Aimee Silva, Iris Tan, Mia Fojas and Elaine Cunanan. Drs. Bien Matawaran, Nemie Nicodemus were PSEM s representatives for the consensus panel. The group presented 5 sets of recommendations then, UNITE has held two meetings (skipping 2009) and initiated the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Diabetes). Representatives of the four groups agreed to incorporate formally and register under the name, Philippines Uniting to Fight Against Diabetes, going by it nickname Unite DM. Representatives from the PSEM were present at the July 9, 2010, CPG meeting at Century Park Hotel, Manila. The PSEM administrative group includes Drs. Lala Acampado and Levy Jasul. covering Screening among adults; Testing for diabetes among symptomatic adults; Screening for Diabetes in Children; Diagnosis of Diabetes; and Screening and Diagnosis of Diabetes in Pregnant Women. We thank the willing and very able participants who represent PSEM in this important endeavour.
