PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello CCONS Members, we are more than halfway through the year now, and what a busy year we have had. We took part in the first ONS Issues in Primary Care Conference to come to our state, and it was a wonderful turnout. We have had some terrific programs each month and have had a great turnout for those as well. A program was held in Groton to entice some membership from that area, and we not only got some new members, we gained a new Director. The board would like to welcome Jessica Wojcik, RN to the position of Director at Large. We look forward to having more meetings in that area, as well as other areas, to spread our wings and network across the state. The CEU Bonanza was brought back, and it was a wonderful evening. Participants had a great dinner, networked with other members, and obtained CEU s to use towards certification. I would like to encourage you all to become involved in the chapter in some way. Join a committee; let the board know if you would like to run a special project or just have an idea you would like to share. We welcome everyone s input and please feel free to me with any ideas or questions you may have. It has been a pleasure serving as your president thus far, and I look forward to the rest of the year. Fondly, Gean Brown, RN, OCN President CCONS,
PATIENT NAVIGATION On Tuesday, April 17, 2012, over 160 oncology nurses and other professionals attended a conference focusing on patient navigation at the Cromwell Crowne Plaza. The conference, which was sponsored by the Connecticut Cancer Partnership in collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the American Cancer Society and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, was an overwhelming success. Nurses who are currently navigators, as well as nurses interested in patient navigation, attended the conference. National experts discussed the history of patient navigation, complete with projections for its future; barrier recognition and assessment through an interdisciplinary case study; logic for building a navigation program; different models of navigation; how to integrate quality care using navigation; and finally to how measure the effectiveness of navigation programs. Gean Brown, RN, OCN Lung Nurse Navigator MEMBERSHIP NEWS We have a total of 89 members, 11 of these members are new members. 60 of our members are certified. Lets try to increase that number
Members can go to Facebook and find: Central Connecticut Oncology Nursing Society and like us. CCONS is asking for a volunteer to take on the basket drawing. We would need someone who comes to meetings to sell the tickets and coordinate the basket donations. If you are interested in taking on this position, or have any questions about it, please contact Gean Brown at gean.brown@midhosp.org.
THE CCONS ONS CONGRESS WINNERS THIS YEAR ARE LAURA BITTNER AND ALICE ANDERSON CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU BOTH, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR ARTICLES TO BE PRESENTED IN THE FALL CCONS NEWSLETTER.

& & *& +, 0 Gynecologic Cancer Emerging Therapies for Ovarian Cancer Ovarian cancer accounts for about 3% of cancers among women, but causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. New Treatments for Advanced Melanoma Melanoma, a major form of morbidity and mortality in the U.S., accounts for approximately 5% of skin cancers, but is the cause of the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. It is the fifth most common type of cancer among men and seventh among women. With melanoma cases on the rise, there is a definite need for new treatment options. Breast Cancer Breast Cancer and Memory Loss Many women experience chemotherapy-induced cognitive changes in memory, attention, psychomotor speed, and executive functioning. Some women refer to this as chemo brain or chemo fog, a mental haziness that occurs during and shortly after chemotherapy.

Chlorinated Tris is a group of chemicals found in everything from children s mattresses, changing pads and nursing pillows They are carcinogens and have been found to offgas, getting into air and house dust. Research shows that they actually provide little to no fire-safety benefit. Check out this recent study that we participated in: Bill 350: Mercury Thermostat Recycling Initiative: Despite a huge showing of support, the Environment Committee did not vote SB 93 out of Committee. Instead they passed the industry bill-sb 350, An Act Requiring the Establishment of Manufacturer Mercury Thermostat Collection and Recycling Programs which contains some of the same elements (disposal ban and mandatory collection points but doesn t include the financial incentive or performance goals.
