3 Today s Purpose To learn a founda?on of teaching exercise to individuals with au?sm that can be incorporated in physical educa?on, a community sewng or an individual s daily rou?ne. Our Agreement I AGREE to do exercises in this presenta?on with David, Ashley and my peers. I AGREE to pay azen?on and try not to fall asleep. I AGREE to ask ques?ons at any?me. David and Ashley do not mind ques?ons. Today I will learn, have fun, and be able to use these exercises and protocols with my par:cipants. 3
4 A physical ac?vity based program is easy to implement and has been shown to be effec?ve in controlling many types of inappropriate behaviors associated with au?sm. Source: Allison et al. Use of Physical Ac?vity to Improve Behaviors of Children with Au?sm Two for One Benefits Palaestra 2x risk for obesity In addi:on to the health- related benefits of physical ac:vity, research indicates that decreased stereotypy and self- s3mula3ng behavior are the most common behavioral improvement following physical ac3vity for children with au3sm. 5 16 studies suggested that, on average, exercise interven?ons led to a 37% improvement in overall symptomatology of au?sm, specifically, behavioral and academic improvements. A rela:onship exists between motor skill development, language development, social interac:ons and academic performance. Physical movement interven:ons would have the greatest effect when u:lized during academic or therapy sessions versus directly before. Introducing exercise can be challenging 15 5
