28 CONDITIONING GUIDELINES A=WARNIN G: Befre beginning this r any exercise prgram, cnsult yur physician, This is especially imprtant fr individuals ver the age f 35 r individuals with preexisting health prblems, The pulse sensr is nt a medical device, Varius factrs, including yur mvement, may affect the accuracy f heart rate readings, The sensr is intended nly as an exercise aid in determining heart rate trends in general, The fllwing guidelines will help yu t plan yur exercise prgram. Remember--these are general guidelines nly. Fr mre detailed exercise infrmatin, btain a reputable bk r cnsult yur physician. EXERCISE INTENSITY Whether yur gal is t burn fat r t strengthen yur cardivascular system, the key t achieving the desired results is t exercise with the prper intensity. The prper intensity level can be fund by using yur heart rate as a guide. The chart belw shws recmmended heart rates fr fat burning and aerbic exercise. HEART RATE TRAINING ZONES AEROBIC 165! MAX FAT BURN 145 I FAT BURN Age T find the prper heart rate fr yu, first find yur age near the bttm f the chart (ages are runded ff t the nearest ten years). Next, find the three numbers abve yur age. The three numbers define yur "training zne." The lwer tw numbers are recmmended heart rates fr fat burning; the higher number is the recmmended heart rate fr aerbic exercise. T measure yur heart rate during exercise, use the pulse sensr n the cnsle. If yur heart rate is t high r t lw, adjust the speed and incline f the treadmill. Fat Burning T burn fat effectively, yu must exercise at a relatively lw intensity level fr a sustained perid f time. During the first few minutes f exercise, yur bdy uses easily accessible carbhydrate calries fr energy. Only after the first few minutes des yur bdy begin t use stred fat calries fr energy. If yur gal is t burn fat, adjust the speed and incline f the treadmill until yur heart rate is near the lwest number in yur training zne. Fr maximum fat burning, adjust the speed and incline f the treadmill until yur heart rate is near the middle number in yur training zne. Aerbic Exercise If yur gal is t strengthen yur cardivascular system, yur exercise must be "aerbic." Aerbic exercise is activity that requires large amunts f xygen fr prlnged perids f time. This increases the demand n the heart t pump bld t the muscles, and n the lungs t xygenate the bld. Fr aerbic exercise, adjust the speed and incline f the treadmill until yur heart rate is near the highest number in yur training zne. WORKOUT GUIDELINES Each wrkut shuld include the fllwing three parts: A Warm-up--Start each wrkut with 5 t 10 minutes f stretching and light exercise. A prper warm-up increases yur bdy temperature, heart rate and circulatin in preparatin fr exercise. Training Zne Exercise--After warming up, increase the intensity f yur exercise until yur pulse is in yur training zne fr 20 t 60 minutes. (During the first few weeks f yur exercise prgram, d nt keep yur pulse in yur training zne fr lnger than 20 minutes.) Breathe regularly and deeply as yu exercise--never hld yur breath. A Cl-dwn--Finish each wrkut with 5 t 10 minutes f stretching t cl dwn. This will increase the flexibility f yur muscles and will help prevent pst-exercise prblems. Exercise Frequency T maintain r imprve yur cnditin, cmplete three wrkuts each week, with at least ne day f rest between wrkuts. After a few mnths, yu may cmplete up t five wrkuts each week if desired. The key t success is t make exercise a regular and enjyable part f yur everyday life. 28
