1 COURSE GUIDE Personal Trainer pathway SIS30313 Certificate III in Fitness, SIS40210 Certificate IV in Fitness Get qualified as a professional personal trainer with the Certificate III to Certificate IV in Fitness pathway. With the Certificate III and Certificate IV pathway program you will learn how to make a real difference in people s lives by safely and effectively training clients in one-on-one and group situations. During your studies you will learn how the body works and the principals of fitness, as well as proper client screening processes, and how to tailor fitness programs to suit client needs. Aaron has been an AEP for over 10 years and brings valuable experience in both the fitness and allied health fields. Aaron began his career in fitness while studying sport and exercise science. He finished his Certificate IV in Fitness while completing this degree and began work in multiple fitness centres, learning his craft and applying exercise science principles to his work. Aaron then branched out into treating workplace and musculoskeletal injury alongside physiotherapists and orthopaedic surgeons. From there, he furthered his career to include work within residential aged care facilities treating a range of conditions through exercise and lifestyle interventions.

3 Ben Cook Ben is an experienced trainer who has been in the fitness industry for 11 years. During this time, he has participated in all forms of personal training as part of commercial gyms, personal training studios and corporate health programs. Ben has been working in training and assessment for four years at some of Australia s top RTOs and brings a wealth of fitness and teaching knowledge to the course. Ben holds a Bachelor in Exercise and Sport Science, Certificate III/IV in Fitness, Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice, Certificate IV in Training and Assessment as well as various short courses through the ASCA, Rehab Trainer and Kettlebell Coaching. Dane Ivicevic Dane is a body composition specialist and an integrative medicine practitioner running a specialised health and body composition consultancy with over 15 years experience helping others achieve their personal best in health and fitness. Dane is also a Biochemist for Gen-Tec Nutrition, where he conducts research and development for the formulation and design of leading sports supplements Australia wide. As a qualified clinical biochemist, nutritionist and exercise scientist Dane has also lectured at Australia s leading fitness and nutrition institutes over the past 7 years, and has presented at various wellness and fitness conferences on nutrition. An accomplished bodybuilder, he has competed internationally since 2005, placing in the top three at the universe titles three times within NABBA, INBA and WFF. He has also won the Australian titles for his division three times. A big believer in education, Dane holds the following qualifications: Masters of Complimentary Medicine (Current), Postgraduate Diploma of Infection and Immunity, Postgraduate Certificate of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Science (Nutrition and Exercise Science), Diploma of Exercise Science and Fitness Management, Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Certificate IV Fitness and a Certificate III Fitness. Matthew Burns Matthew has been employed within the fitness industry and education sector for 6 years as a personal trainer and as a PDHPE teacher/trainer & Assessor for Fitness and Sport & Recreation. As a personal trainer, Matthew has worked for a number or gyms across Sydney and has run an independent personal training business. Matthew s passion for learning about the body continued into his university years, where his primary focus was Exercise Science (Bachelor) and Secondary Education (Diploma). Matthew also holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Pool lifeguard Certification, Certificate III in Fitness and was a sponsored fitness model in the under 30 Australian National Bodybuilding (ANB) Nationals competition in Sydney 2012.

4 Matthew Morrison Matthew is a registered Australian Strength and Conditioning Coach with experience training AFL draftees, elite level junior rugby union players and highly ranked Muay Thai fighters. Matthew holds a Diploma of Fitness, a Certificate IV in Fitness, a Certificate III in Fitness, and a Certificate III in Nutrition and Dietetic Assistance, as well as a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. An ardent advocate for fitness, he runs his own personal training business, has worked with one of Australia s leading supplement companies and continues to work closely with Barbarian Muay Thai fight team. An athlete in his own right, Matthew has a passion for, and competes in, both Muay Thai and Kickboxing. Phil Casey Since receiving his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Phil has held a number of specialist posts in both hospital and community settings, including roles in pediatrics and working with diabetics. He has also worked as a chiropractic assistant in Sydney s CBD for five years, a role which saw him perform exercise rehabilitation sessions for clients. Also qualified in sports/remedial massage and personal fitness training, Phil has 20 years fitness industry experience including personal training, facility management and sales. As an educator, Phil has over six years experience teaching a range of face-to-face and online courses across anatomy and physiology, Certificate III and IV in Fitness and the Diploma of Fitness. Phil McKay Phil has completed a Certificate III and IV in Fitness and a Diploma of Fitness. Phil began his career as a gym instructor and also worked in personal training. He later moved into a fitness coordinator role, supervising a team of personal trainers and group fitness instructors. After a few years of managing a professional gym, Phil started his own fitness studio. Phil wants to use his experience to help his students take their passion to change their lives, and develop better health and wellbeing.

5 Robert Bikesic Robert has skills in many areas, including lecturing, coordinating fitness programs, personal training and running group fitness classes. He is passionate about helping individuals achieve their sporting and fitness goals. Robert holds a bachelors degree in Sports Coaching and Administration, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, a Certificate IV in Fitness, a Level 2 in Strength and Conditioning and other related certifications. He also currently competes in the Men s Black Belt under 87 kg divisions in WTF Taekwondo; hoping to eventually achieve the green and gold. 11 The duration for the course is maximum 36 months. As a self-paced online course, the time it will take you to complete is flexible and dependent on ability and time available. Work placement What is a work placement? A work placement is the part of your course where you learn and are assessed in a place of work related to your course which has been approved by Open Colleges. At your work placement, you ll get practical, hands-on training under the guidance of a supervisor. What are the benefits? By undertaking a work placement you ll get a chance to put the knowledge you ve learned on your course into practice. You ll also develop practical, on-the-job skills and could make contacts that could help you find a job once you graduate. Work placement is often the most rewarding part of a student s course. Working face-to-face with clients and colleagues in your chosen field makes a huge difference to your career confidence. How do I find a work placement? You ll need to find a work placement yourself and ensure it s approved by Open Colleges. When looking for a suitable work placement host organisation, have a think about the following: Are you already working or volunteering in the industry your course is related to? You could potentially do your work placement at your current place of work or have contacts that could recommend a suitable work place. Ask around! If you re entering a new industry, do some research and start thinking about organisations you could approach. We have plenty of resources available to help with approaching and finding a suitable work placement organisation. What support will I get? It s your responsibility to find a suitable work place to carry out your work placement, however, there is a Work Placement Team available to give you a hand if you find that you are struggling. Work placement hours This course contains a minimum of 180 hours of work placement. Host organisation As part of this pathway you are required to undertake a minimum of 180 hours of Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) during the course in an appropriate workplace, supervised by a qualified staff member: Certificate III in Fitness: Minimum of 80 hours Certificate IV in Fitness: Minimum of 100 hours. You will need to secure your own Work Placement; however Open Colleges can provide advice and direction through

12 our Work Placement Support Team. Additionally, you can choose to be assessed through our network of Assessment Centres and Workplace Assessment Centres, at your own cost, which is outlined in the Schedule of Administrative Fees (available on the Key Student Information page of this website). Your work placement will need to be completed in Australia, and you will be responsible for the costs of any travel, accommodation, statutory checks or other requirements related to your work placement. Requirements Education You will need to have completed year 10, or equivalent. Equivalency can be demonstrated by one of the following: A qualification at Certificate II level or higher OR 2 years of industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication. Education There are no formal education entry requirements for this course. Minimum age You will need to be at least 18 years old. Skills To successfully complete this course, you will require basic computing skills. This includes: Creating, saving and editing Microsoft Office documents Accessing and searching the internet Downloading and saving documents from websites Uploading documents through websites Participating in online discussions Compressing image files Recording, compressing and uploading videos. Additional First Aid The unit HLTAID003 Apply first aid (or its equivalent) is not delivered by Open Colleges. This unit can be satisfied via the completion of the nationally recognised unit of competency or its equivalent offered by an approved provider. You will need to provide a certified copy of a current certificate or Statement of Attainment to be provided credit for this unit. You will need to pay a fee directly to the provider and may be required to travel in order to undertake this unit with the provider of your choice. Whilst it is not a requirement to hold a current first aid certificate to undertake work placement in this industry, workplaces have the right to request this.
