2 Activity 1: Discussion Purpose: To identify how much GO activities should be done: at least 60 minutes every day. For background information, see FYI: The Importance of Physical Activity in the back of this teacher s manual. A. B. Help students understand this length of time by relating it to class periods at your school, to one or more TV shows, etc.] C. 6 Family Tip Sheet 2: Let s Move! DO WHAT THE LEADER DOES Kids and grown-ups can play the following game together. GO activities are Fun, fun, fun No matter where they re Done, done, done! Take turns being an exercise leader. The leader chooses a few exercises (like jumping jacks or pretend jump-roping) or movements (like hopping or marching in place) and does them. Everyone else has to do the same thing as the exercise leader. After a few minutes, another person becomes the leader. WHAT S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT... PHYSICAL ACTIVITY? In the CATCH program, GO activities are physical activities that make you breathe faster (and possibly more deeply) and make your heart beat faster. While you played Do What the Leader Does, did you feel these changes? How do GO activities help kids (and adults too)? When they do enough of these activities... they sleep better they do better in school they get sick less often their behavior improves their brain function improves their bones and muscles are stronger they re less likely to gain too much weight It s best for kids to do GO activities at least 60 minutes every day. (Recommendation for adults: at least 30 minutes on most days.) But they don t have to do all of the 60 minutes at once. They can divide up the time for example, doing 20 minutes at three different times of the day. 68
7 Great Ideas Here are some suggestions for getting everyone more active. Ɓ Make one goal to reduce the time you spend watching TV and playing video games and another goal to increase the time you re active. Talk about the bene ts you hope to gain. Ɓ Plan regular times to do GO activities. Encourage each other to stick with your plan. Ɓ Make one list of excuses you might make for not doing the GO activities you ve planned, and another list of the ways you ll overcome those excuses. Ɓ Add variety to your GO activities by changing up your routine or doing the activities to music. Ɓ Remember that activities like sweeping Àoors and raking leaves are GO activities too. INDOORS, OUTDOORS It s easy to ` Ê "Ê>VÌ Û Ì iãê ÕÌ` ÀÃ But what if it s too cold or too hot... or maybe it s raining? Then ` Ê "Ê>VÌ Û Ì iãê ` ÀÃ like the Do What the Leader Does game. Look at the girl at the beginning of this tip sheet. Together, say aloud what she is telling you. Play a pantomime game. Here s how you play: A grown-up pretends to do each of the following GO activities. The kindergarten boy or girl guesses what the grown-up is doing, then says if the GO activity can be done indoors or outdoors (or both).
