But there s life beyond becoming a teacher or a trainer for Physical Education graduates, says Meenakshi Pahuja, the first Indian to successfully swim across five lakes in five days. She is also the first in India to swim around Key West, Florida as well as Lake Travis, Texas. Meenakshi feels elated as she talks about the evolving opportunities for such students in India. A career in sports has now become a highly paid avenue. One can work as sports scientists, journalists, become a qualified Physical Education Trainer, take up a coaching assignment, become sports nutritionists, and so on and so forth. Research in sports is also on the rise, and Sports Authority Centres are opening up, says Meenakshi. Large-scale sports clubs, gyms, and fitness centres do provide opportunities for employment, for trained graduates. physical abilities. It may include 100 metres running, short put or javelin throw, long/high jump, and playing the game of their interest. In some cases, these three are followed by an interview and medical check-up. It involves activities which incorporate and develop movement, mobility, control, health, fitness, strength, stamina, challenge, and body skills. As a career, physical education is emerging as a lucrative option in India. Most of the companies, government departments and organizations have increasingly been giving emphasis on special job allocation for people trained in physical education and sports. Sports people are particularly encouraged with promotion in their job for their achievements. Gaining Admission There are a number of Physical Education colleges in India. Many institutes and universities include it as a core subject. One can pursue a three or fouryear Bachelor s in Physical Education after The admission process varies from one university to another. But the basics remain the same. To gain admission, a student has to take an academic test, a physical fitness test and a playing ability test. In the academic test, basic general knowledge and proficiency in English language is judged while the other two determine the 4 5

It comprises papers like physiology, sports management, medicine, psychology, rules and regulations, health education, training methods, coaching and biomechanics. The course includes broader topics on sports science, coaching, and outdoor education. The syllabus includes intensive practice element. In many institutes, one could be sent to schools or training centres as Physical Education Trainers. These practical tests expose you to the real environment, bonding with the learners, and how you would teach the basics of outdoor activities. The main subjects include Principles of Physical Education & Educational Psychology; Anatomy, Physiology & Health Education; Kinesiology and Exercise Physiology. However, uniformity of the curriculum is not there across institutes. During the course, students are trained in fitness, development of neuromuscular skill and personality. You will also learn how to manage teams and mentor others. According to Nara Hari, District Inspector of Physical Education at Government College of Physical Education Hyderabad, Interest and stamina of the students play an important role throughout the course. Further Specialisation One can opt for specialisations once you complete your bachelors. These include; Sports Administration, Biomechanics-Kinesiology, Coaching, Physical Therapy, Research, Sports Psychology, Sports Sociology, and Sports Medicine. 6 7

Edusports co-founder and CEO Saumil Majumdar s advice is to follow the money trail in the industry. For example, with sponsors one can do event management, talent handling, sports marketing, sports media and advertising. There are online platforms like Cricinfo, ESPN also to work with. The other stream of money is subscription to sports by means of gyms, coaching classes, trainers, etc. Edusports which delivers sports education in schools hire people at the ground level. In around five years they become Delivery Managers, then Relationship Managers, and then either go to sales or develop courseware, methodologies, and assessment technologies. Then with this expertise they go into senior level management, says Saumil. Once you gain experience you can earn between Rs 25,000 to 50,000 per month. The traditional work place, however, remains to be schools and colleges where the openings are comparatively large. There are other avenues in fitness, sports or recreational centres, where one can be absorbed as Rehabilitation Specialist/Physical Therapist, Fitness Instructor, Coach, Nutrition Specialist, Personal Trainer or a Team manager. A number of foreign universities and institutions select you as coaches and trainers with a good salary and facilities including accommodation. A deep love of what you do and plus interest in the latest developments in the domain and stamina can develop you into a coach or a trainer of international repute. 8 9
