2 Welcome to the 2013 Edition of the Spain Park High School Marching Band The Pride of the Park! Contained in this packet is our preseason technique and training program. To better help prepare for band camp and the upcoming season, it is important that you participate in the preseason technique program. Your personal success, and consequently the band s success, will depend on your commitment to the program. Please read the following helpful hints and reminders: Make sure that all exercises are played with an excellent tone quality, at the correct tempo, with correct dynamics, articulation, etc. Use a timer to maximize your workout. Use a metronome & tuner to ensure that exercises are perfor med at the appropriate tempo with good pitch center. Free metronomes can be found at There are a also a number of outstanding metronome and tuner apps available for your mobile device All of the exercises should be perfor med while standing up with appropriate posture. If you become dizzy or lightheaded during the breathing exercises, either bend over from the waist or breath through your nose for several seconds. Choose the part that is most comfortable for you. Follow the schedule and GO JAGS! Schedule (Complete four prescribed workouts each week during the off -season) Segment 1 (May 26-June 22) - 20 minute workout Segment 2 (June 23-July 6) - 30 minute workout Segment 3 (July 7 July 27) - 45 minute workout

3 SEGMENT 1 (May 26-June 22) This is the most important Segment. Do your part to help our band be the BEST! Dynamics & 20 Minute Workout Power, MM=92 8 s (In for 8, Out for 8) - 2 repetitions 4 s (In for 4, Out for 4) - 2 repetitions 2 s (In for 2, Out for 2) - 2 repetitions Long Tone s Ex 1, 2, or minutes Long Tone s Ex 1, 2, or 3 Lip Slurs Ex 1 or 2 Articulation Ex 1 2 minutes Familiarize yourself with the most challenging sections of the music
