2 Welcome! Dear Project Leader, HandsOn Bay Area depends on motivated individuals like you who are committed to strengthening our communities through volunteer action. By becoming a HandsOn Bay Area Project Leader, you are taking the next step in creating positive change through the power of volunteering. We are deeply thankful for the work that you do - representing HandsOn Bay Area at all of our projects and creating a positive volunteer experience for everyone involved. Project Leaders are the foundation of HandsOn Bay Area s Calendar Program. You are the link between our staff, our community partners, and our amazing volunteers. By leading projects, you not only help make our projects successful, but you allow us to create even more engaging opportunities for volunteers to get involved. 3 What is a Project Leader? Ambassador Motivator Change-Maker Representing HandsOn Bay Area, you are the link between our volunteers and community partners*. Wearing your Project Leader t-shirt, telling people more about HandsOn Bay Area, and sharing your photos and story on social media help us promote the power of volunteering! Before, during, and after your project, you have the ability to motivate volunteers to attend, finish the goals of your project, and ultimately foster a great relationship with the organization you are helping. By committing to the HandsOn Bay Area Project Leader Program, you are capable of making real, positive change in your community. Providing a steady stream of volunteers is an essential service to our 240+ community partners. Regularly leading and attending specific projects benefits everyone involved! Be an ambassador Tell the people At your project and around town, let people know how fun and easy it is to volunteer with HandsOn Bay Area. Rep the gear Wear your black HandsOn Bay Area Project Leader t-shirt or hoodie and pass out nametags at your projects. Share the story Take photos, tag us and share your volunteering experience on social #volunteerboss *Community Partner = The park, nonprofit, agency, or school hosting you and your volunteers Tips for talking about HandsOn Bay Area At the start of your project and when talking to new potential volunteers, take a few seconds to tell people about HandsOn Bay Area! 1. Keep it short, simple & fun 2. Involve them in the conversation 3. 4 Be a motivator Before your project One week before your project, contact your community partner to confirm the project details and how many volunteers are currently registered. During the week leading up to your project, your volunteers to confirm their attendance and pass along any additional information At your project Arrive to your project 15 minutes early to check-in with your community partner and make sure everything is ready. As your volunteers arrive, greet them and take attendance. Don t forget to hand out name tags for them to fill out. Once everyone has arrived, introduce yourself and get started. Volunteers are often eager to learn about other opportunities and our Project Leader Program. Encourage them to ask questions. As your project rolls along, make sure your volunteers are working hard, having fun and taking necessary breaks. Remember, a good Project Leader keeps volunteers motivated! After your project Login to the Project Leader Portal to verify your volunteers hours. Mark them as either Attended or Not Attended. Leading a HandsOn Bay Area project like a #volunteerboss 4 Send a brief thank you to your volunteers and encourage them to share their experience and volunteer again.
