2 Intro This ebook is designed to give you a basic idea of what CrossFit is and how it can help you transform your body. This guide will define CrossFit, get rid of any misconceptions, and show you the basic movements. Hope to see you at CrossFit Petram soon! -Nicholas Rybinski, Head Coach and Owner

3 What is CrossFit? CrossFit is an idea about what fitness actually is and and how we should achieve it. Most people believe that fitness is all about being either a meat head or having a small waist. CrossFit isn't about having a six pack (although it will help you get that). It's about how well your body functions. As humans one of the biggest affects on our quality of life is our the quality of our movements. By using this lense, we build not only better bodies but also better movements.

4 What is CrossFit? Highly Varied, Functional Movement, Executed at High Intensity CrossFit HQ This is how CrossFit HQ (the parent company) defines it's protocol. This may seem a little confusing but well break this down into simpler terms on the next page.

5 CROSSFIT HIGHLY VARIED Highly varied means that the workouts are never the same. Every single day that you come to CrossFit Petram you will be completeing a different workout. We train you to be able to handle whatever life throws at you. This may be lifting heavy one day or running fast the next. FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT In CrossFit all of the movments we perform are fuctional. This means that they transfer to the real world. For instance there are very few times that you would need to complete a bicep curl in your day to day life, but there will be many times that you need to pick something heavy off the ground safely. EXECUTED AT HIGH INTENSITY This is where things get fun. All CrossFit workouts are done in a competition style. You compete on time, weight or other points with other members in the gym. Don't worry new guys, all of these workouts are appriopiately "scaled" so anyone can get a fun workout safely.

6 Is CrossFit For Me? The purpose of CrossFit is to prepare you for anything life throws at you. This can be anything as dramatic as carrying a child out of a burning building, or as simple as carrying all your groceries in on one trip. By training functional movements you will be able to handle diverse challenges you never thought possible. Activities like rock climbing or a pick up game of flag football will all of a sudden be easy and fun for you. It's not just for fitness buffs either, everyone from Grandma's to children participate in CrossFit everyday. All of the WOD's (CrossFit slang for workout) are scalable. This means that no matter where you are in your fitness journey you will be able to do the WOD at the same intensity as everyone else in the room. For instance if you are just beginning you may start out squatting 50 pounds, while someone that has been here 2 years may be squatting 250 pounds. Scaling keeps the workouts challenging enough for you to get stronger, EVERY DAY!

7 Is CrossFit For Me? If you decide to join CrossFit Petram you will be joining not only a gym but a community. We are a group of people just like you who work, live and have fun in the Newark and Bear area. This means that you will find friends that will cheer you on inside the gym and will hang out with you outside of it too. 8 Is It Safe? Let's address a question that nearly everyone has, is it safe? The answer is yes and no. CrossFit is only safe when done on well maintained equipment, and with a proficient coach or with experience. Anytime you roll out of bed in the morning you take on some degree of risk. We at CrossFit Petram take your safety very seriously but please realize that there may be bumps and bruises along the way. Your health and safety is our number one priority.
