Islene Silva Lima Barcelos ACUPUNCTURE ACTION IN HEADACHE Monograph presents to Erich Fromm University Florida, United States to obtain the title of specialist in acupuncture. teacher: Dr. Alfredo Alexander Raspa São Paulo 2018
ACUPUNCTURE ACTION IN HEADACHE ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the acupuncture technique in the treatment of headache. METHODS: Literature review using databases Medline, Lilacs, Scielo and Pubmed, 12 (twelve) articles were found, of which only 7 (seven) met the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the present study, and 2 (two) books to complement the work. CONCLUSION: According to the present study, we can conclude that acupuncture has been highlighted as a treatment option in cases of headache, considering that it is a relatively low-cost treatment when compared to some medications, and the expected results usually take the form of a number of sessions. KEYWORDS: Acupuncture, headache, migraine.
INTRODUCTION: Headache is considered a serious public health problem 2, 4 and their involvement generates a great social impact, 7 because sometimes it becomes incapacitating. 5 It is a neurological symptom 1, 4, 5 and your complaint is very frequent, it is estimated that at some point in life people have already suffered or will suffer with headache. 1 The use of acupuncture has been increasing for the prophylaxis of headache. 3,4,6 According to the Brazilian Headache Society, 95% of the population will present a headache throughout their life. About 70% of women and 50% of men have at least one episode of headache per month. Migraine occurs in up to 20% of women. And a total of 13 million Brazilians have a headache at least 15 days a month, what we call daily chronic headache. Are alarming numbers. And, usually, headache becomes chronic, that is, starts with less frequent pain, considered "normal", and with the increase of the crises and the excessive use of analgesics turns into an almost daily headache. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the use of the acupuncture technique in the treatment of headache.
LITERATURE REVIEW: Headache under the western gaze: There are several types of headache, being the most common are the so-called primary headache, they are the tensional and migraine type headaches, being vascular in the migraine and myofascial in the tension headache. 7 Tension headache: is characterized by low frequency of seizures and low intensity pain symptomatology, often the patient does not seek the doctor for treatment, because it relapses spontaneously or with common analgesic medication. It becomes a problem in clinical practice when its frequency increases, with crises occurring almost daily, characterizing chronic tension -type headache. 7 Migraines: are characterized by pain from moderate to severe intensity, often generating incapacitation to perform everyday activities. Besides that, maybe accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, transient neurological manifestations, changes in visual acuity, paraesthesia, paresis, ataxia, which characterize the migraine 4, 5, 7 aura, intolerance to light and sounds. Headache under the oriental gaze: Headache can be caused by an attack of endogenous or exogenous pathogenic factors. 8 When the pathogenic wind invades the human body, it first strikes the upper portion of the body. 8 Endogenous factors: usually by increased liver yang or deficiency of Qi and blood. 8 Exogenous factors: invasion of pathogenic wind in the energetic channels, causing imbalance and obstruction of Qi and
blood, can be after sudden change of time or exposure to the wind. 8 Headache can also be caused by deficiency of both, blood Qi, because of irregular food intake, excessive stress and stress, poor health with a chronic disease or congenital deficiency. Qi deficiency prevents the clear Yang from ascending, and blood deficiency does not nourish the mind, so there is headache. 8 Treatment: The term acupuncture means acus = needle and puncture = sting. But the traditional Chinese term provides a broader sense of the true art of healing. From Chinese, Zhen Jiu Fa that is to say "The Method of the needles and the Moxa. The treatment in antiquity consisted in crafting spears on the surface of the body at strategic points in the skin to ward off the "evil spirits". Perhaps the earliest points of acupuncture were the so -called "Thirteen Points of the Devil", which currently serve to treat neurological pathologies and psychic. 9 When performed by qualified professionals, the technique appears to be relatively safe, although not without risk. 2 The World Health Organization recognizes a cupuncture as a low-cost, high-effectiveness therapy. 1 The principle of acupuncture acting is to interfere in the configuration in a Qi in an individual starting from the stimulation of points that produce highly specific changes in the physiology of individuals. 4 Its effects on the treatment of headache indicate that the introduction of a needle into the muscular layer can exert important energy actions, related to the release of substances from the Central Nervous System. 1 And it has results as effective or more effective than treatment with prophylactic drugs, and fewer adverse effects, 3 besides improving the quality of life. 5 However,
more scientific studies are necessary to better prove the technique. 6
CONCLUSION: According to the present study, we can conclude that acupuncture has emerged as a treatment option in cases of headache, considering that it is a relatively low -cost treatment when compared to some medications, and the expected results usually come in a number of few sessions. However, more scientific studies are necessary to better prove the technique.
