1 Scientists Profile: Name: Titilayo Oyelola FAKEYE Tel: 234(0) SHORT C.V Research Interests: Drug/herb utilization and Interaction; Medicine-use related problems among chronically ill patients with emphasis on herb use and related issues; Implementation research in Pharmacy Practice Current research focus: The areas of my research focus have been on the biological evaluation of commonly used herbs, drug utilization in different populations with emphasis on drug-herb use and interaction, pharmacist-led interventions in management of chronic diseases with emphasis on diabetes mellitus, and implementation research in pharmacy practice. In collaboration with other research scientists, I have been able to establish the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of the basic fraction of the methanol extract of Picralima nitida towards developing the fraction as a drug candidate in inflammation and fungal infections. The cream formulation of the basic fraction was found effective in human dermatomycosis. I have worked extensively on drug use among different populations, attitude of patients populations to use of herbal agents, and tendency to co-administer western drugs and herbal medicines. The series of studies carried out showed gross deficiency and illogical assumptions by the users on basic issues of rational drug use. The results highlighted the need for healthcare providers especially pharmacists to take cognizance of herb use when a patient s drug medication history is being taken; and for ambulatory patients, proper counselling of patients on herb use when drugs are dispensed. Studies evaluating the mechanism of interactions between some of the herbs and drugs have established activities of cytochrome P450 isozymes. Our studies have shown that pharmacists and physicians were found deficient regarding herbal agents usually sold in Nigeria suggesting that they require more training in order to counsel patients adequately.
2 As a result of unearthing extensive herb use among diabetes patients, studies to evaluate the effect of coadministration of herbs including Moringa oleifera, Vernonia amygdalina, Ocimum gratisimum with selected oral hypoglycemic agents have been completed. Some of the studies also seek to propose the mechanism of interactions of these two classes of agents. Also, in vivo interaction of water beverage of Hibiscus sabdariffa with drugs, and the outcome on therapy in hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia are almost completed using animal models and healthy human volunteers. Research work on pharmacist-led interventions in treatment adherence among poorly controlled type 2 diabetes in Nigerian hospitals showed that pharmacist, especially with clinical orientation, can help diabetes patients in understanding their regimen exercise, diet and drugs; identify and resolve various treatment non-adherence problems leading to the achievement of blood glucose goals. Studies are on-going evaluating the impact of pharmacist-led interventions in the management of other chronic diseases. Several studies have shown that the Nigerian pharmacist is capable of making positive impact on health care of the patient. Concurrently with other research studies, my research team is also evaluating the factors responsible for the non-implementation of some of these practices in the day-to-day duties of the pharmacist, proposing solutions and making efforts to implement these skills in pharmacies real-time through implementation studies.
