1 RESOURCES To pursue more herbal information PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS American Herbalist Guild: (Organized the premiere national herbalist conference each year September/October; they have free webinars to view for members, their professional magazine is now an ezine features many clinical case studies as well as herbal monographs and book reviews). American Botanical Council: (if you get on their free newsletter, they will send you announcements of conferences around the world, including any news in the media and any press releases to respond to negative media news). As a beginner in the world of herbs, if I could join just one of the 3 here, I d join this one. You can get more than 1 magazine (one for home, and one for work) with your membership. HERBAL SCHOOLS, WEBINARS Gaia Herbs Professional Solutions: (Has about 8 webinars a year, posted on the top left of the screen. If you register and can t make the presentation, they will send you a replay link along with the slide download link). If you send them an with your certification (RD or Bachelor s in nutrition copy of diploma) they will grant you access to their educational resource center which has all the past webinars and some monographs. The webinars provide extensive research studies cited along with clinical applications (provided by clinicians who use these herbs in practice. Clinicians include RDs (Ashley Koff), MDs and Naturopathic doctors, sometimes PhDs and nurses) CE credits possible for some professions. Directory of herbal schools, (The Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism is one of the most highly regarded schools in the country); many school websites also have great articles on herbs This resource includes some other smaller programs not in the list above: Local classes: Many of the herbal apothecaries listed in local purchasing resources also hold classes for the enthusiast. See those websites for more detail.

2 ONLINE INFORMATION Learning herbs: (lots of free resources to entice you to join their sister website: Herb mentor: This site has more in depth herbal information (including monographs) along with discussion groups), Memerbship cost required. The Herbarium: (As a member, you will have access to their always expanding library of plant monographs, photographs, articles, podcasts, videos, tutorials, and charts, all based on research and the wisdom of many contributing herbalists. ) $45 a year membership East West Planetary School of Herbology, (a collection of great articles; also has wonderful regular/prolific posts about herbs on facebook page check them out) Henriette s Herbal, (an herbalist s favorite) University of Maryland Complementary and Alternative Medicine Index, (short and sweet and a good first stop to check out some herbs in a snapshot). Someone donated over $8 million dollars to have this website built and I consider it a nice cross between herbal friendly and western-medicine based. It s a great first stop and also has an herb interaction checker. This site is always being updated. Natural Medicines, A premiere database of herbal therapies based on research in existence. $200 subscription per year can use for free if you go to UCCS library. This shows extensive research on herbs but takes a more pharmaceutical approach without the voice of an experienced herbalist. Therefore, there will be more theoretical warnings (so extremely conservative use). Since they bought out Natural Standard, my feeling of this database is that it is more herbal scary than herbal friendly. Yet, if you would prefer a more conservative approach, then this is the resource for you. American College of Healthcare Sciences, If you sign up for their free newsletter, you will get announcements for free webinars they are mostly very good and quite extensive in the information they offer within an hour. They are here: Learning about Essential Oils, This site has free useful information about essential oils and has some 3 rd party certification testing. On facebook, there is also a safety essential oils you can subscribe to. They are on the conservative side of EO use. Famous, well respected herbalists and their blogs (not exhaustive list, and many can be found on Facebook as well): Paul Bergner, Med Herb, (he s a classic, extremely brilliant herbalist) Rosemary Gladstar, /welcome/ (original owner of Mountain Rose Herbs and a celebrity among herbalists) James Duke, (Famous USDA botanist turned herbalist) 2

3 Rosalee de la Foret, David Hoffmann, (Author of numerous books, including Medical herbalism textbook used in herbalism schools) Guido Mase, (Chief Herbalist of Urban Moonshine an amazing emerging young herbalist whose lectures are standing room only.) Brigitte Mars, (author of numerous books and right here in Boulder holds many classes throughout the year, along with the iherb app) Michael Moore, (Contains the bible of material medica free download-- and considered the founding father of modern herbalism; everything we know today about herbs is due to his work) Matthew Wood, (Also author of numerous books and highly respected in the field) 7song, (Northeast School of Botanical Medicine) David Winston, (Another brilliant classic; discovered that nettles seed can help heal (even cure) the most significant cases of renal issues) Aviva Romm, (A doctor and herbalist, former president of the AHG, well known for her work on herbs in children; sign up for her newsletter) Marisa Marciano, (This is a gem of a website quick reference for herbal actions and short list of herbs; organized by herbal actions and name of herbs) Jim McDonald, (Does not have an RH certification but a highly respected herbalist in the field, his website is extensive with herbal articles and resources) Herb Research Foundation clearinghouse of best websites: (an extensive collection of herbal websites where you can learn more about herbs) HERBAL DOCUMENTARY Numen: The Healing Power of Plants, Great resources on the website, wonderful movie. There will be a release soon about the herbal industry undercover as documented by Ann Armbrecht who is travelling the world and filming this movie. 3

4 MAGAZINES FOR THE ENTHUSIAST Natural Herbal Living Magazine, (subscription includes an ezine article featuring one herb a month in detail usually around pages, large print. If you wish you can order their herbal kit of the month which features everything you need to make the recipes inside the article of the month). This is an herbalist located here in Westminster, Colorado. If you go online you can download an article for free. The Essential Herbal Magazine, (Amazing little gem that comes in print and pdf. Lots of recipes for the adventurous cook yes using food and culinary herbs and spices, can download a free edition from 2013; just packed with all types of information) Plant Healer Magazine, (pretty pricey, but gorgeous art and excellent articles; I d say more for the serious herbal enthusiast rather than a beginner) The Herb Quarterly, (You can find this in natural health food stores and Barnes and Noble; a great and fun starting point if you re new to herbs; includes easy to read articles on herbs, information on gardening as well as recipes for cooking or making for your own beauty products) The Herb Companion Magazine: available on amazon and in local health food stores. Great magazine if you like to garden and then use the herbs. Lots of great articles, interviews by herbalists, up to date information BOOKS TO GET YOU STARTED GENERAL HERBS Any book by Rosemary Gladstar. These books are great if you want a fun introduction to herbs and how to use them. Simple to read and useful with lots of recipes in each one. Very reasonably priced. The Complete Herbs Sourcebook by David Hoffmann. This is the lay version of the textbook (Medical Herbalism) Organized by herbal actions and by herb a great resource for your bookshelf and quite inexpensive. No photos. The Herbal Apothecary by JJ Pursell. An easy to use, delightful book packed with information, great photos and recipes. If you could get only one book on this list, this would be it as it incorporates the preparations, information on herbs, herbal actions, and recipes. It has everything in one place. Herbal Vade Mecum by Gazmend Skenderi. 800 herbs, spices, essential oils, lipids, etc which includes a listing of constituents, properties, uses, and cautions. Author has a degree in pharmacy. This is considered a foundational textbook and I would consider this if you want to get serious about herbs in your professional but not necessarily just for fun use. Herbal Constituents: Foundations of Phytochemistry by Lisa Ganora. If you re looking for a deeper look at phytochemicals, but a cross between herbalism and western medicine biochemistry, then this book is for you. Another foundational textbook in herbalism coursework, it is very organic chemistry 4

5 oriented yet with practical information. Extensive research cited. Incorporates phytochemicals found in foods and herbs. For example, Betalain Alkaloids are found in beets, swiss chard, spinach, amaranth (all foods) and also in Purslane, prickly pear, and Lamb s Quarters (all medicinal herbs). Healing Spices by Bharat Aggarwal. This is an absolute gem. If you love to cook and learn about the many therapeutic benefits of culinary herbs and spices (and want some recipes to go along with the herb/spice) then this book is for you. No pictures, but loaded with information. A great addition to the dietitian s bookshelf. HERBAL MEDICINE MAKING The Herbal Medicine Maker s Handbook, by Green. This is the bible of herbal medicine making and a requirement in herbal schools. To be released on Tuesday The Modern Herbal Dispensory by Easly and Horne. After looking through the book online, this is looking like another gem. The information is organized slightly differently than the above book and has much useful and practical information that the other doesn t have (such as which herbs lend themselves to make glycerites, herbal energetics, etc) This looks like a nice complementary book to the one above. I think you can t go wrong with either one and still have a complete reference. SPECIFIC HERBS The Wild Medicine Solution: Healing with Aromatic, Bitter and Tonic Plants by Guido Mase. If you re interested in aromatics (peppermint, lemon balm, linden, ginger, garlic; bitters (dandelion, burdock, yellowdock and wormwood) and tonics (chocolate, astragulus, red reishi and hawthorn), then this is an amazing addition to your bookshelf. Includes growing, harvesting, using and recipes. Adaptogens: Herbs for strength, stamina and stress relief by David Winston and Steven Maimes. A great introductory book on adaptogenic herbs, also includes medicinal mushrooms. Simpler to use (and significantly smaller) than the companion textbook (Adaptogens in Medical herbalism by Yance which also has numerous research cited). Includes safety ratings, dosages, and interactions. DRUG HERB INTERACTIONS Herbal Contraindications and Drug Interactions plus herbal adjuncts with medicine by Francis Brinker. This is the textbook that herbalists use to determine drug herb interactions. Extensive research studies cited. It is currently in its 4 th edition and is as complete as Natural Medicines Database yet more user friendly. Herbal Antibiotics: Natural Alternatives for treating drug-resistant bacteria and Herbal Antivirals : Natural remedies for Emerging and Resistant viral infections by Stephen Buhner. Wonderful books about these two topics. Extensive research cited along with practical tips on how to use. Classics. ESSENTIAL OILS, HYDROSOLS and FLOWER ESSENCES Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand (2 nd edition). This is the bible for essential oil safety, though it is a textbook and it is very large. Extensive research cited. Aromatherapy for health Professionals by 5

6 Shirley and Len Price is a much smaller book than Tisserand s book but has many useful clinical applications and case studies (even use in hospitals!). If you prefer something more fun and laymanlike, yet complete in information and that includes recipes (over 800 of them) then check out The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy (2 nd edition) by Valerie Worwood. This is all you need if you re interested in Essential Oils. Hydrosols:The next aromatherapy by Suzanne Catty. There aren t too many books on this subject written but this is a nice general book filled with monographs and including hydrosols in food and beauty recipes. Bach Flower Therapy Theory and Practice by Mechthild Scheffer. A small book with lots of information. Bach is not the only creator of flower essences but one of the most famous and his line of products is featured in many stores. If you don t want to invest in the book you can obtain a snapshot of what different flower essences can do in this free website: 6
