2 2 1. Abhayarishta Ref. Charaka samhita, Susruta samhita and Astanga hrdayam Preparation method - 1 Bark of Terminalia chebula Retz. (384 gm), 768 gm of Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., 480 gm of Limonia acidissima L., 240 gm root of Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad., each of 96 gm of Embelia ribes Burm.f., Piper longum L. Aponogeton natans Engl.& Krause, Piper nigrum L. and Mukia maderaspatana (L.) M. Roem are powdered and decoction is prepared using litre of water and reduced into one fourth of quantity. Then kg of jaggery is dissolved. In addtion to this, 768 gm infloresence of Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz. is added and then allowed for fermentation. After fermentation, the liquid is filtered and used. According to Siddthayoha sangraham, 192 gm inflorescence of Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz., each of 48 gm bark of Cinnamomum verum Presl, flowers of Cinnamomum verum Presl flower, inflorescence of Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm and 768 gm of Vitis vinifera L. are made into presheba suranam and mixed with the above decoction and allowed for fermentation. The amount of jaggery should be double when the amount of water used in the preparation is double. The prescribed amount is ml depending upon the age. It should be mixed with water either equal or double the amount. Preparation method - 2 In charaka samhita and Archas shiksha the abhayarishta is refered as balarishta. Bark of Terminalia chebula Retz. (774 gm), 768 gm of Emblica offcinalis Gaertn. Each of 96 gm of Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad., Limonia acidissima L. Sida cordifolia L. and Plumbago zeylanica L. These plant materials are decoctioned in litre of water and concentrated in one part of quantity kg of jaggery and 384 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz. inflorescence is added in the decoction and allowed for fermentation.

3 3 Preparation method - 3 According to Bhaishajya ratinavali, kg bark of Terminalia chebula Retz., kg of Vitis vinifera L., 480 gm of Embelia ribes Burm.f., 480 gm of Madhuca longifolia (Koenig) Macbr. are made into a decoction in litre water and concentrated into one fourth of quantity kg of jaggery, each of 96 gm of Tribulus terrestris L., Ipomoea turpethum (L.) R. Br., seeds of Coriandrum sativum L., inflorescence of Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz., Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad., Piper nigrum L., Foeniculum vulgare Mill., dry Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Merremia turpethum Rendle and Ceiba pentandra (L.) Gaertn.are added in the decoction as prasheba suranam and allowed for fermentation. The third method is suitable for all types of patients, the first method is something tough method and the second method is moderate effective for all groups. This arishta is recommended specific for piles and constipation, helpful for mild ascites and dropsy, remove obstruction to urine, increase digestive power, enlargement of liver and spleen and anaemia. 2. Ahifenasava Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali Papaver somniferum L. (192 gm), 48 gm of Cyperus rotundus L., Myristica fragrans Houtt., Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br. and Amomum subulatum Roxb. are powdered and mixed with kg of spirit made from Madhuca longifolia (Koenig) Macbr., and allowed for fermentation drops of sugar solution or water is mixed with asava for consumption. Ahifenasava is used for cholera and fevers.

Correa, Premna obtusifolia R.Br., Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth, Stereospermum colais (Buch.-Ham.ex Dillwyn) Mabb., Gmelina arborea Roxb., Solanum virginianum L., Solanum anguivi Lam., Desmodium gangeticum (L.) DC., Pseudarthria viscida Wight & Arn. and Tribulus terrestris L.], are made into decoction using litre of water and concentrated into one fourth of the quantity. Then add kg of jaggery, 768 gm seeds of Cuminum cyminum L., 96 gm of Hedyotis corymbosa (L.) Lam., each of 48 gm of Alstonia scholaris R.Br., dry Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Piper nigrum L., Piper longum L., Cyperus rotundus L., Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora Pennell, Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. ex Royle, and Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br.are made into powdered and mixed with the decoction and allowed for fermentation. Note The amount of water used for decoction should be double ie litres. According to Sahasra yogam the amount of jaggery is kg. The prescribed quantity is ml. This arishta is recommended for chronic fevers and its weakness, malaria, indigestion etc. to be taking with piles. 4. Arakvatharishta Ref. Saraka samhita Merremia turpethum Rendle (768 gm) is powdered and made into decocotion using litres of water and concentrated into one fourth of quantity and add 192 gm of Cassia fistula L., jaggery and kept under fermentation for one and half month.

5 5 This arishta is useful for skin diseases, effective in healing all eighteen types of diseases, leucoderma, worms, piles, constipation and foul wounds. 5. Aravindasava Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali and Sahasra yoham Each of 48 gm flowers of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., roots of Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, Gmelina asiatica L., Nymphaea stellata Willd., Rubia cordifolia L., Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Sida rhombifolia L. Nardostachys grandiflora DC., Cyperus rotundus L., Hemidesmus indicus R.Br., Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Acorus calamus L., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe, Ipomoea turpethum (L.) R. Br., Indigofera tinctoria L., Trichosanthes lobata Roxb., Hedyotis corymbosa (L.) Lam., Terminalia arjuna Wight & Arn, Madhuca longifolia (Koenig) Macbr., Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Nardostachys sp., kg of Vitis vinifera L., 768 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.) Kurz., are powdered and dissolved in liters of water kg of jaggery and kg of honey is added allowed for fermentation. Note Gmelina asiatica L. may be replaced by Crocus sativus L. 48 gm of Crocus sativus L. is may be added after fermentation of arishta. The prescribed quantity for adult is ml and child quantity is 4-8 ml. This asava is very useful for digestive disorders in children, promotes growth, traditionally recommended to raise ojas, the underlying energies behind the body s immunity also commonly used for anorexia and mental anxiety, stimulant, tonic, carminative, stomachic. It is tonic for children and effective in rickets and other child diseases like fever, cough and constipation.

6 6 6. Ashokarishta Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali and Sahasra yoham Method - 1 Bark of Saraca asoca (Roxb.) De Wild (4.800 kg) is powered and decoctioned in litres of water and concentrated in one fourth of quantity. Then add kg of jaggery, 768 gm inflorescence of Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz., 48 gm of Cuminum cyminum L., Cyperus rotundus L., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Coscinium fenestratum Colebr., tubers of Nymphaea stellata Willd., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Terminalia chebula Retz., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., seeds of Mangifera indica L., Nigella sativa L., root bark of Justicia beddomei (C.B.Clarke) Bennet, and Santalum album L. in the decoction and kept for fermentation. Method- 2 This method is referred in Siddhayoga sangraham. According to Bhaishajya Ratnavali some modifications are carried out in this method by the combination of both Ashokarishta and Patrangalasava. Bark of Saraca asoca (Roxb.) De Wilde (4.800 kg) and kg bark of Aponogeton natans Engl. & Krause are made into decoction using litres of water and concentrated into one fourth of quantity kg of jaggery, kg of honey, 768 gm inflorescence of Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz., 960 gm of Vitis vinifera L., each of 48 gm of Cuminum cyminum L., Cyperus rotundus L., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Coscinium fenestratum Colebr., Costus speciosus (Koenig ex Retz.) Sm., bark of Terminalia chebula Retz., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., bark of Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Mangifera indica L., Crocus sativus L., Justicia beddomei (C.B.Clarke) Bennet, seeds of Santalum album L., Sarcostemma secamone (L.) Bennet, Osyris wightiana Wall., Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd., Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa, latex of Bombax ceiba L., Sida rhombifolia L., Semecarpus anacardium L.f., Hemidesmus indicus R.Br., flowers of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L., bark of Cinnamomum verum Presl, Amomum subulatum Roxb., Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry are added in the decoction as presheba suranam and allowed for fermentation.

7 7 Note There are some disturbances occur during the formation of arishta. They are Due to the addition of bulk amount of presheba suranam, the water quantity is not enough for the formation for arishta. The decoction is not clear. Water and honey are added as double quantity for the formation of clear decoction. After fermentation of arishta, Crocus sativus L. to be dissolved. By experience, the decoction is made by 72 litres water and is concentrated as 18 litres of quantity; kg of sugar, 4800 gm of honey and other ingredients are added for the arishta preparation. The prescribed quantity is ml. This arishta is useful for female health concern such as menstrual disorders, excessive bleeding and uterine disease, alterative, stimulant, astringent and used in leucorrhoea, haematouria, menorrhagia and other female complaints. 7. Aswagandharishta Ref. Bhaishajya ratinavali Method Tubers of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (2.400 kg), 960 gm tubers of Curculigo orchioides Gaertn., each of 480 gm of Rubia cordifolia L., Terminalia chebula Retz., Curcuma longa L., Coscinium fenestratum Colebr., Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Alpinia galanga L.Sw, Ipomoea digitata L., bark of Terminalia arjuna Wight & Arn, Cyperus rotundus L., Ipomoea turpethum (L.) R. Br., 384 mg of Hemidesmus indicus R.Br., Decalepis hamiltonii Wight & Arn., Santalum album L., Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. Acorus calamus L. and Plumbago zeylanica L.are powdered and made into decoction using litres of water and concentrated into one fourth of quantity. Then add 768 gm inflorescence of Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz.,

8 kg of honey, 96 gm of dry Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Piper nigrum L., Piper longum L., Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, 192 gm of Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Cinnamomum verum Presl flower, bark of Cinnamomum verum Presl and Callicarpa macrophylla Vahl. in the decoction and allowed for fermentation. Note Care taken for the quantity finished product due to infusion of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal in water and it reduces the water quantity. The prescribed quantity is ml. This arishta is recommended for tension, anxiety and general weakness, it rejuvenates the entire nerves system, nurturing, calming and clarifying. It is useful for neurological and mental disorders, psychosis, epilepsy, insomnia, fainting and loss of memory, sedative and alterative used in nervous debility and certain mental affection, loss of memory, epilepsy and mania. 8. Astashatharishta Ref. Charaka samhita, Sekitasthanam and Gathanikgraham Each of 100 numbers of Gmelina asiatica L., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., Piper nigrum L., Terminalia chebula Retz. and Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Vitis vinifera L., Piper longum L kg of old jaggery are soaked in litres of water, which are placed in sun light for one week and transferred in the shadow for two weeks. The prescribed amount is ml. This arishta is recommended for constipation.

9 9 9. Avarthakasava Ref. Gathanikgraham Cassia senna L. (384 gm), 72 gm of Aloe succotrina Lam., 24 gm of Pistacia lentiscus L. and Garcinia morella (Gaertn.) Desr. are powdered and dissolved in litres of water. This mixture is fermented for 3 days, filtered and consumed. Note This asava is not stored for long days. By experience, kg of sugar or jaggery and gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.) Kurz. are mixed together in litres of water and allowed for fermentation for one month. The prescribed quantity is ml and taken after meals. This asava is useful for the treatment of ring disease formed around the waist. 10. Baboolarishta Ref. Saraka samhita, Bhaishajya Ratnavali and Kadhanikragam Acacia leucophloea (Roxb.) Willd. (9.600 kg) is made into decoction using 60 litres of water and concentrated into 15 litres of decoction. Then add, kg of jaggery, 768 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., each of 48 gm of Piper longum L., Myristica fragrans Houtt., Piper cubeba L.f., Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Cinnamomum verum Presl skin, Cinnamomum verum Presl flower, Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry and Piper nigrum L. and kept for fermentation. The prescribed amount is ml. This arishta improves appetite, digestive, carminative astringent and haemostatic, Blood purifying used in skin diseases and blood impurities, metabolic disorders, urinary disorders,

10 10 diarrhoea, diabetes, bronchitis, asthma and cough. gonorrhoea. It is useful in urethral irrigation in 11. Balarishta Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali Sida rhombifolia L. (4.800 kg), kg of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, are powdered and made decoction using 60 litres of water and concentrated into 15 litres of decoction. Then add, kg of jaggery, 768 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz, 48 gm of Asparagus racemosus Willd., Alpinia galanga L.Sw, Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Trichosanthes tricuspidata Lour., Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, Tribulus terrestris L.in the form of powder and allowed for fermentation. The prescribed amount is ml. This arishta cures gastric problems (vata vyadhi) and as restorative. It is the gastric (vata) remedy par excellence. It is prime tool for battle arthritis, rheumatism and all other auto immune reactions. It is recommended for neurological disorders, back pain, numbness and pain in the extremities. Anti rheumatic and diuretic indicated in hemiplegia, rheumatic pain and other vatro gas. 12. Balasasva Ref. Saraka samhita The bark of Butea monosperma (Lam.) Taub. is collected and flamed to make ash. The residue is dissolved in the hot water and two third part jaggery is added and then allowed for fermentation. The prescribed amount is ml This asava is useful for abdominal disorder, intestinal burning and anaemia.

11 Beejagarishta Ref. Saraka samhita Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. (768 gm), 960 gm of Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., 240 gm of Vitis vinifera L., 336 gm resin of the insect Cappria lacca are powdered and made into decoction using 15 litres of water and concentrated into litres of decoction. Then add, kg of sugar, 768 gm of honey, 12 gm of Piper nigrum L., Piper longum L., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, Areca catechu L., Mukia maderaspatana (L.) M. Roem, Glycyrrhiza glabra L. and Inula racemosa Hook. F. in the form of powder and kept for fermentation. The prescribed amount is ml This arishta is useful for grahani, anaemia, pile diseases, jaundice and urinary tract diseases. 14. Beerukhanthmulasava Ref. Kadhanikragam Aerial part of kg of Euphorbia antiquorum L., Ficus benghalensis L., Calotropis gigantea (L.) R.Br., kg of dasamoolam [Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa, Premna obtusifolia R.Br., Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth, Gmelina asiatica L., Stereospermum colais (Buch.-Ham.ex Dillwyn) Mabb., Solanum virginianum L., Solanum anguivi Lam., Pseudarthria viscida Wight & Arn., Desmodium gangeticum (L.) DC., Tribulus terrestris L.] are powdered, dissolved and made decoction using litres of water and concentrated into litres of decoction. After 2 days, add 96 kg of jaggery and kept for 3 days in the sun light. Then add, 960 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., 384 gm of Terminalia chebula Retz., 960 gm of Areca catechu L., 240 gm of Piper longum L., each of 48 gm of Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Cinnamomum verum Presl, Piper cubeba L.f., Myristica fragrans Houtt., bark of Cinnamomum verum Presl, flower of Cinnamomum verum Presl, Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, Piper nigrum L. are

12 12 powdered and mixed with the decoction. Then, add 384 gm of honey and kept for 8 days. Then add some amount of jaggery and allowed for fermentation. Note One eighth part preparation is preferred in this asava preparation. The prescribed amount is ml This asava is recommended for asthma, anaemia, enlargement of spleen, worm diseases, gulma, ascitis, diabetes and respiratory disorders. 15. Beerungarajasava Ref. Kadhanikragam Jaggery (9.600 kg), 384 gm bark of Terminalia chebula Retz., 96 gm of Piper longum L., Myristica fragrans Houtt., Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Cinnamomum verum Presl, Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Cinnamomum verum Presl, Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm are powdered and mixed with 15 litres juice of Eclipta prostate L. and kept for fermentation. The prescribed amount is ml This asava is useful in wasting diseases, coughs, anaemia and bronchitis, also used in sterility in women, useful also in chronic fevers and enlargement of liver and spleen. 16. Boothikhatharishta Ref. Saraka samhita Each of 48 gm of Caesalpinia bonduc (L.) Roxb., Piper nigrum L., Plumbago zeylanica L., Cedrus deodara (Roxb. ex D.Don) G.Don, Hemidesmus indicus R.Br., Merremia turpethum Rendle, Piper nigrum L., Piper longum L., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, 192 gm root of Ziziphus
