2 Mark s Farm Update What do we do here at Pacific Botanicals? This is a question that I have to ask myself everyday. The answer seems obvious; we farm. But what kind of farming do we do? Well, herbs of course. But what is our business? In essence our business is helping people. We grow herbs that become medicine. We try to grow them with the highest intention for the best quality possible. We want people to get well. We want them to be healthy. That is why we are certified organic. That is our commitment. Health is one of the top subjects on our minds today. I am a baby boomer and maybe you are too. There are tens of millions of us out there and we are thinking about our health. Our conversations more and more are about our health. In this era of pharmaceutical overload, natural medicine as an alternative becomes more and more viable each day. I can t help but think that medicine that is grown in the clean healthy soil of the Applegate Valley, in the vitamin D rich rays of the sun, with fresh clean air and certified organic conditions, is the best thing to put in our bodies. Why would we want to make medicine, teas, tinctures, salves out of anything less? We put so much care into what we do here Hot New Products at Pacific Botanicals. We have been doing this work for over 30 years. There is an energy that you can feel here on the farm; whether it is people packing herbs, planting seed in the greenhouse, creating the images for the catalog, cleaning roots in the washer, plowing the fields, helping customers plan their crops for the year, or taking orders over the phone. It is a soul satisfying feeling. We are more than just a farm. One of my ongoing concerns for the herbal medicine supply in the U.S. is that it is corrupted by cheap low quality herbs. These herbs can come from sources that have questionable authenticity and organic status, and/or can be lacking in constituent potency. Thirty one years ago some colleagues and I started the Grants Pass Grower s Market. We wanted people to know the farmer that grew their vegetables. We wanted them to have quality food for their families. We wanted the local farming Wild harvested blueberry Powder The potent free radical fighting antioxidants found in our Wild Blueberry powder (Vaccinium Mortinia) from Ecuador include flavanoids and other phenolics such as anthocyanins. Wild blueberries are higher in anthocyanin content than other fruits and vegetables. Anthocyanin is the compound that gives blueberries their deep color. Also a good source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, blueberries are believed to help reduce eyestrain and improve night vision. Blueberries are high in the phytochemical resveratol, also found in grapes and wine, which has been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer. Some of its recommended uses are for treating fevers, digestive disturbances, skin problems, and general fatigue. It has been used for intestinal parasites, malaria, diabetes, fungal infections and inflammatory diseases. Many of the symptoms of Lyme disease can be treated with Neem, specifically the arthritic symptoms and generally Neem can help with the treatment of most kinds of arthritic conditions. Wildcrafted Herbs and Herbs Grown Without Chemicals Some of our herbs are carefully harvested and dried by wildcrafters known to us who follow strict harvesting guidelines established by the company. Herbs that are Grown Without Chemicals (GWC) are grown and shipped to us chemical-free. We offer them with the knowledge that they are grown, harvested and shipped to us with the same quality and care that we require of our Certified Organically Grown and Wildcrafted herbs. It seems it was just yesterday that snow, mud, rain and short days were keeping us inside. The wood stove still warms us on the cool nights, but we ve have had some delightfully warm spring days, for hiking, picnics, and wine sipping by the ocean. Our greenhouse crew is busy with planting the seedlings for the various herbs. We call them affectionately our babies. They start out invisible so that when you walk into the greenhouse all you see are brown trays. But then slowly the green peachfuzz rises, a n d t h e n the shoots lengthen and pretty soon we have a wonderful car pet of baby plants waiting to be transplanted. Walking into the greenhouses on a cold spring day is like walking into the tropics. Moist, warm, humid, it really feels like you have entered some vegetable products, and those listed with an (*) are kosher certified by Earth Kosher, www. earthkosher.com. Each time I go into the greenhouses I feel uplifted by the energy of birthing that is going on. The other thing I notice are the birds, and the animals. From the frog choruses in the evening, to the return of the graceful hawks and buzzards soaring in the thermals, the farm comes alive with our animal friends. Fox, heron, black tail deer, coyote, raccoon, bobcat, goose and the delicate lazuli bunting all share the land with us. I love these aspects of organic farming; That we don t crowd out the other creatures. That we nourish the land with natural fertilizers and soil builders to protect the earth. Some of our herbs are sold by the ounce and this is reflected by item in the catalogue. For single herb orders over 500 pounds, call (541) , x104 for a quote. When the herb/root is ready for harvesting, we will contact you by phone. Please note that you may only receive one or two days notice due to the variable nature of the harvest schedule. Herbs and roots are packed with re-useable ice packs when necessary and charged at $.75 each. Clean and dry ice packs with no holes are returnable for a $.75 credit to account. Herbs: Our fresh herbs are shipped out UPS Next Day Air. Roots: In a normal year we begin root harvest in early October and dig until the ground freezes usually in November. Some roots are only available once or twice each year. Roots are shipped out by UPS Second Day Air. Pacific Botanicals will not be responsible for fresh shipments mailed to apartment number addresses. General Shipping Dry herb orders are shipped UPS ground service unless otherwise requested. Fresh herb orders are sent UPS Next Day Air. Fresh root orders are sent UPS SECOND DAY AIR. There are some restrictions for mailing dry plant material to California, Hawaii, Arizona and foreign countries. Please contact your local Agriculture authorities regarding any regulations regarding the importation of dried plant material. Although we diligently strive to stay informed about the many and ever changing shipping regulations, the ultimate responsibility is with the consumer. We cannot be responsible for any delays or rejections of product crossing into these states or imported into a foreign country. We must receive proper shipping and labeling instructions from the shipper and/or consumer. International Shipping Each international customer is responsible for finding out if a product is allowed into their country. Products that are grown on our farm are EU compliant for shipment to European countries (including the UK) except for Lobelia. We will file a claim with the shipper and get out a replacement promptly. I think of this as the rain hits the windshield rising fast in frantic creeks. Fresh. Clean. Swift. Like a baptism. A cold renewing rain over white skin rising shivering.
