SPEAKER FOR JULY 14, 2016: LINDA MCGOWAN: WORLD TRAVELLER TRAVELLING WITH MS AND CREATING YOUR OWN ACCESSIBILITY Pursuing your dreams, is all about attitude, energy and participation, says world traveller Linda McGowan. Since her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis in 1983, Linda McGowan has travelled the globe. She s viewed the top of the world in Nepal from a basket on a porter s back, hob- knobbed with emperor penguins on the Falkland Islands and savoured India from seven overnight trains. With creativity, patience and an open mind, Linda has conquered the world, all from the apparent vulnerability of her wheelchair. Born in Montreal, Linda McGowan is a graduate of the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing. As well as BScN, she holds an MBA and has worked in community health for over 40 years. Linda is the consumer advocacy manager for MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. HandyDART in Metro Vancouver. She is committed to safe and available transportation for seniors and people with disabilities. Linda has travelled in a wheelchair to more than

2 2 130 countries, touching on every continent. She is an accessibility advocate, a motivational speaker and a writer who encourages all to embrace their dreams. I wish you sunny, warm weather and I hope you wish me calm seas! Party news Following our Thursday, August 11 business meeting with speaker Brian Latell on Castro s Secrets: You are invited to our Summer Soiree Thursday, August 11 11:30 a.m. Marine Drive Golf Club RSVP required by July 25: Vice- President Peter Cook at pcook@telus.net (I realize the true definition of a soiree is an evening party, but never mindj ). Your annual dues will cover the cost of the delicious food. You ll learn more details at the July meeting from House chair Mark White who is organizing this. But feel free to RSVP right away knowing the numbers helps us plan. What, no greeters? We hope you felt welcome and found friendly PROBUS members to chat with at our June meeting. It was our first meeting following the management committee s decision to dispense with the greeters at the foot of the stairs due to the dearth of volunteers for this particular job. The signs directed everyone upstairs, where there were lots of members to visit with. Things seemed to work smoothly please let me know if you think otherwise.

3 3 New contact s for management committee When you are busy trying to contact us with your opinions (or volunteering to be chair of the communications committee we really do need you!), check out the current PROBUS Vancouver West webpage (if you can t remember the address, just google us) and/or the back page of this July newsletter. We have changed our contacts to our home s, since no one used the PROBUS ones. Let us hear from you! We need a Communications Chair! As I explained at our June meeting, our wonderful communications chair, Johanne Leach, has had to resign. She is staying on as our PROBE newsletter editor. Ann Carroll is continuing to manage our webpage. Tony Weall is continuing to send all our communications out to you. If you look at the job of the communications chair, you ll see these three have the details covered! We need a chair to coordinate things and serve as a liaison with the management committee. I know we have many able members who have done similar tasks in their previous business and volunteer lives. We need you! News from National Our June newsletter from PROBUS CANADA reports that Vancouver s Bill Sexsmith, current national vice- president, is working on a National Marketing Plan It is working on enhancing insurance options for all PROBUS members. You can keep up- to- date on this by checking the PROBUS CANADA website at There are now 238 clubs and 33,561 members across Canada. 4 4 ACTIVITIES REPORT The recent tour of the Regional Recycling Depot at 960 Evans Ave. was most interesting and informative. The depot recycles everything except carpeting, oil and automotive parts. We observed a can crusher and a Styrofoam compacter. The depot handles about 68 dozen beer bottles every two to three days. Payment comes partially from the recycle fee and also from beer companies. The rain held off until we had finished the tour a tribute to good planning. Penny Pearson PARTY TIME An Invitation for You! 5 5 MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEETING THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 2016 PROBUS CLUB VANCOUVER WEST Marine Drive Golf Club Rosemary Wakefield in the chair TIME: 9:30 11:30 a.m. ATTENDANCE: 77 members, 2 guests ANNOUNCEMENTS: Rosemary on behalf of Tony Weall, welcomed our newest member Joan Heaver and the membership is now 178. Rosemary announced that Johanne Leach has resigned her position as chair of the communications committee and a search is underway for a replacement. Members interested in this position should contact Mark White, chair of the nominating committee. Johanne has agreed to continue as editor of THE PROBE. Rosemary advised that the website has been changed. The management committee can now be contacted using their personal addresses. The tour of the Recycling Depot was a resounding success and a full complement of 20 members attended. Penny Pearson was thanked for organizing this event. Sharon Baxter announced that as there was sufficient interest, a tour to Harrison River to view the eagles in late November would be undertaken. The cost will be $130 and further details will be provided at the next meeting. Mark White, at the request of the management committee, arranged to have this meeting in a larger room, at an increased monthly rental of $200. The feedback from the members at this meeting was positive and general support was expressed that this arrangement be formalized with the golf club. Mark White advised that August 11 general meeting, a catered event, was proceeding as planned. The speaker will be Brian Latell - Castros Secrets. Speaker: Pat Ostrow introduced the speaker Dr. David Sweet O.C. Professor Forensic Odontology UBC. His talk was entitled Behind the Crime Scene Barrier Tape. The attendees were treated to a very animated presentation on the latest research and methodology being used to identify the perpetrators of crime and the use of forensic evidence in their prosecution. Bob Wakefield thanked the speaker. The meeting adjourned at a.m. and the next meeting will be July 14,2016.
