1 Youth Homelessness Working Group Recap Monday, March 13, 2017 Family Advocates Welcome Tim Flaherty, Astegos Jeremy Blades, CATCH Neysa Jensen, Community Member Jaime Hansen, Family Advocates Rachelle Marez, Head Start Jenifer Grout, The Salvation Army Samantha Joseph, Terry Reilly 1:30--2:30 PM Stephanie Day Background Stephanie Day HUD announced at the 2015 National Alliance to End Homelessness conference that they recognized that youth experiencing homelessness (up to age 25) needed different interventions than other persons experiencing homelessness. They did not have much research or guidance to give at that point, but they were pursuing it. In late 2015 one of Ada County s Commissioners was asked if Ada County could participate in a nationwide research project headed by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago. Ada County participated in this event and conducted a youth count in June of The final report should be released in late spring/early summer. HUD and HHS announced a new grant opportunity for Continuums of Care to apply to create an innovating youth-serving program. The CoC applied for this grant, which was not awarded. In the process of compiling the information for this grant, it appeared that youth homelessness and housing instability is a major issue that is not receiving much attention and that there are major gaps in services for youth experiencing homelessness. System Mapping Group Discussion The Working Group reviewed the last meeting since many present at this meeting were not present for the first meeting The group reviewed a youth-services provider chart that was developed since the last meeting and gave suggestions for additions (see updated chart) The group reviewed a youth-services provider map and gave suggestions for additions (see updated map) Several youth housing providers have closed or moved their housing from Ada County o What is causing this decrease in housing? (NW Children s Home, etc.) What Do We Know? Group Discussion Group members who provide services to unstably housed youth were asked to bring whatever data they have to share to start building a better understanding of the dynamics causing and effecting youth housing instability Rachelle brought some statistics, but they included those served through their Elmore County office o Head Start served 433 people in 76 families that were experiencing homelessness last year 1
2 o Rachelle will update these numbers for the group with just Ada County included West Ada School District served around 480 students who were experiencing homelessness last year o They also served around 80 unaccompanied youth Penelope said that she can provide jail statistics (# of youth who run away) Samantha said that she can provide Healthcare for the Homeless data Jaime said that she can provide the number of kids coming into foster care Data collection can start with unaccompanied youth, and then progress to youth in families Next Steps Bring any data that might be pertinent to youth homelessness to share Meeting Schedule Next meeting: March 27 th 1:30-2:30 pm at Family Advocates 2
