ETC 2 Project The popular and successful ETC training programme is in its 4 th year... so an update. 329 women enrolled on the programme during this time to discover more about non-traditional training for women via a variety of courses workshops and information sessions. These covered a wide range of topics from accredited training in Joinery, Plumbing, Electrics, Decorating, Tiling, ICT & Horticulture to First Aid, Life Coaching, Careers Advice sessions, Business Start Up workshops, Site Visits and Trades Sampling to name but a few. This resulted in 388 qualifications at level 1 and 43 qualifications at level 2 and still counting, the programme runs in until the end of March Feedback from our participants has been phenomenal, the table below demonstrates this. Progressed to Further Education Employment Still training Other Self Employment Voluntary work For further information on the ETC 2 Project contact Patricia Fleming Tel: or patricia.fleming@womenstec.org Total

ECDL is going well and will continue this term and we look forward to the students returning in January to complete the course. Additional events and site visits included: First Aid Training Life Coaching Tour of Quarries Farm with a view to volunteering Belfast City Council Blackstaff Recycling Plant Tour There will be an induction day on Tuesday 6 th January at 10am for all new students and we look forward to seeing everyone then. 2
ETC 2 Courses & Events 3
ETC 2 Volunteer Project The joinery workshop is now all painted and looking fantastic. The volunteers worked very hard to get it looking so good and in a short time frame between courses. The final part was painting the floor which brought the whole thing together and it looks amazing. WOMEN STEC would like to say a big thank you to all who gave up their time to help out and to Lynn Baird who coordinated the work. Now what s next!!!!! 4
The Joinery night class for working women has now finished and was a huge success. The women made a spice rack, learned joinery techniques and wood finishing. The feedback from the group was extremely positive and the women are looking for more training. They all said they felt the course was great value for money and are looking to see what they could learn in the next course. I have heard a few rumours about making a wine rack next time! For information and cost of our next night class contact Patricia Fleming patricia.fleming@womenstec.org or Tel:
STEPS The STEPS to Excellence for Personal Success course finished today. This was a 6 week course facilitated by Eileen Weir from Shankill Women s Centre through the Greater North Belfast Women s Network. Eileen helped the group to co-create their learning through interactive discussions, personal reflection time, the use of short video bursts and activities utilising a wide variety of learning styles. The course looked at how our minds work and understanding change, the importance of self esteem as well as motivation to stretch our comfort zones, goal setting and affirmations to Make it Happen! The feedback from all the students was fantastic and everyone felt they had learned tools and techniques that will equip them to have greater expectations of success and higher selfefficacy. 6
Dialogue Across the Cities Patricia Fleming attended Dialogue Across the Cities today at City Hall. This marked the formal partnership launch between WIP and TWN. The event addressed the under representation of women in public life. Speakers included Lord Mayor Nicola Mallon, Patricia Lewsley-Mooney NI Commissioner for Children and Young People ( ), Eileen Bell CBE Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Councillor Deirdre Hargey Belfast City Council, Pat Neeson Compliance Officer, The Commissioner for Public Appointments NI, Una McKernan Deputy Chief Executive, NICVA. This was an interesting event and well attended by women from a wide range of community organisations. Northern Ireland Assembly A g r o u p o f WOMEN'STEC students, pictured with Paula Bradley (MLA), attended an event organised by the Northern Ireland Assembly to raise concerns regarding training for women in North Belfast. 7
European Project From 25th to 28th of November Niamh Muldoon and Jacqueline Davies participated in the fourth meeting of the WITH-CH Project in Malaga. The meeting involved the local working groups (Andalusian Health Service) and the project partners coming from: Poland, Turkey, Romania, United Kingdom and Italy. During the meeting participants focused on the course curriculum and progress to date, they shared their own experiences and discussed "active and healthy lifestyle curricula". They then took part in a very interesting workshop the Spanish Omelette Challenge.. The next meeting will take place in Belfast and we can t wait to host all our partners in our wonderful city. We are looking forward to delivering short health themed courses in January after the Christmas holidays. 8
Stress Management Workshop On Wednesday 20th November a group of women attended a workshop focusing on stress management and how to live a healthier lifestyle as part of the Light Gen Project. All the women enjoyed learning various techniques to manage stress brought on by today s fast paced world, with increasing demands on us and dealing with situations that we do not have control over. The women were taught how to handle stressful situations by using relaxation techniques as well as making positive lifestyle changes. Stress is not a medical diagnosis, but severe stress that continues for a long time may lead to a diagnosis of depression or anxiety, or more severe mental health problems. 9
Healthy Eating Lunch WOMEN STEC had a healthy lunch workshop as part of our Light Gen Project, which is about healthy eating habits and physical activity in the family and is currently taking place in seven countries in Europe. We had fresh fruit, homemade vegetable soup and water to drink. Niamh would like to thank the students who participated in the workshops and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 10
Students from WOMEN STEC attended a Women s Leadership event in Windsor Women s Centre, hosted by WRDA. Fiona O Donnell a policy and research worker in Stormont and Clare Bailey from the south Belfast green party both gave inspiring and encouraging talks at the event. At the workshop we broke in to 4 different groups and answered questions which the facilitators fed back to the room. The information will be collated and used f o r t h e n e w Women s Manifesto which is produced every 4 years. We thoroughly enjoyed the event and found it very informative and empowering. Leadership Event A Warm Welcome Welcome to our new Finance & Administration Manager, Lisa McCann. She came on board WOMEN STEC in November and we welcome her as an important member of our team. Lisa has ten years experience in finance, eight of which have been in the community sector. 11
