The Florida State Sunshine Standards acknowledge that it is important for students to practice decision-making skills that enhance responsible behaviors and to be able to identify circumstances that can help or hinder healthy decision-making. With these objectives in mind and in accordance with the Florida Sunshine State Standards, the FCCG has developed the 1st 3rd Grade Smart Choices Promote Healthy Lives Program. This one hour program is a great resource to add to your current student enrichment efforts with no cost or impact on your budget. Smart Choices: Grades 4th-5th Grade Lessons The Florida Department of Education promotes healthy practices for all students. The Florida State Sunshine Standards acknowledge that it is important for students to practice decision-making skills that enhance responsible behaviors and to be able to identify circumstances that can help or hinder healthy decision-making. With these objectives in mind and in accordance with the Florida Sunshine State Standards, the FCCG has developed the 4th 5th Grade Smart Choices Promote Healthy Lives Program. This one hour program is a great resource to add to your current student enrichment efforts with no cost or impact on your budget. When Gambling Takes Control of the Game The National Federation of State High School Associations teamed up with the NCAA and the FCCG to develop a comprehensive lesson plan for high school student athletes. The program provides guidelines for coaches and educators, and is designed to educate high school student-athletes on the various forms of gambling, the addictive dangers of these activities, and the possible adverse impacts on a student athlete s education, sport, professional career, and future.
Are You Gambling with Your Life? (interactive CD with video) This life skills training program assists Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) personnel, educators, facilitators, counselors, psychologists, and other professionals in providing essential information about the dangers and consequences of gambling to high risk youth incarcerated in DJJ facilities or outside the DJJ system. (Note: This FCCG/DJJ joint program is not intended for mainstream youth or the public school system. It is Language Sensitive and depicts scenes and scripts based upon actual focus group input within Florida s DJJ detention population). COLLEGE SPECIFIC MATERIALS FOCUS-College Newsletter This college specific issue of the FCCG Focus Newsletter contains research based on the FCCG s College Prevalence Study, important insight from leading experts on young adults pertaining to sports wagering, population specific program information, vital information on the signs of a gambling addiction geared toward family and friends of students, and ways campuses across Florida can raise awareness on the perils of gambling addiction. Gambling & Problem Gambling Prevalence Among College Students in Florida The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling (FCCG) contracted with the University of South Florida s Center for Research, Evaluation, Assessment, and Measurement (CREAM) to conduct a survey of Florida college students regarding their gambling practices and associated behaviors. This is the first study that focuses specifically on the gambling behavior of Florida college students. The information gathered from this research is intended to be helpful in policy formation, in guiding future research, and in the development of prevention and treatment programs for college students.
College Workbook This college specific self-help recovery workbook is designed to help college students experiencing gambling related difficulties to eliminate self-defeating negative behaviors, to think clearly, and make better decisions to lead a healthier lifestyle. This Workbook may be utilized independently or in conjunction with support groups, professional counseling, or through services provided in the college counseling center. MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS MATERIALS Diagnosis: Pathological Gambling Every day, compulsive gamblers and those they adversely affect present in doctors offices, emergency rooms, and elsewhere with symptoms never attributed to gambling. Diagnosis: Pathological Gambling includes a 10-minute video presentation featuring important information and testimony of field experts, as well as a comprehensive medical professionals guide with screening tools, collateral items for patients, and additional materials. WORKPLACE PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES Managing the Odds The FCCG s Managing the Odds program empowers employers to develop a site specific plan that increases employee awareness, provides support to personnel who may be experiencing gambling related difficulties, and establishes a workplace culture conducive to recovery for employees with a gambling problem. Managing the Odds is intended to bridge gambling addiction services as a natural extension to existing programming regarding other employee addictions and mental health issues at all levels within large and small organizations. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MATERIALS Domestic Violence Toolkit This toolkit includes a short public service announcement illustrating the link between problem gambling and domestic violence as well as a poster and brochure. Family violence and neglect are often reported by callers to the FCCG s 888-ADMIT-IT HelpLine. While the causes of intimate partner violence (IPV) are not completely recognized, there is a correlation between IPV and problem gambling. Awareness of this link and screening of both victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse is key in providing appropriate support if there is a gambling problem present.
FAMILY MEMBERS AND LOVED ONES RESOURCES Domino Effect/Las Caras del Problema de Juego This video highlights the impacts that a gambling addiction can have on family members and other loved ones and the devastation it can cause not just the gambler but everyone around them. This DVD is available in both English and Spanish, and offers a unique insight into the many struggles faced by families of problem gamblers. English (quantity) Spanish (quantity) TREATMENT PROVIDERS RESOURCES COUNSELING CENTER PROFESSIONALS Dealing with Addiction Toolkit (Available to Counseling Center Staff) Dealing with Addiction offers a look into the complex world of cross-addiction, featuring the presence of problem gambling intermingled with substance abuse, and mental health issues. A joint effort by the FCCG and the Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association, this toolkit features a DVD and other tools to arm treatment professionals with the resources necessary to recognize, assess, and advise patients in their care that may also suffer from problem gambling. SENIOR SPECIFIC RESOURCES & MATERIALS Angels in Disguise Toolkit The FCCG s Angels in Disguise toolkit is designed for caregivers, assisted living facilities, senior centers, and other entities and organizations that assist elderly and incapacitated individuals. This program contains valuable information that will help you to recognize the signs and dangers of gambling problems among older adults in the early and latter stages of the illness and how to provide appropriate intervention. In addition it will help you to appreciate why seniors gamble; identify and offer viable, population specific, recreational activities; consider your own reactions and behaviors in response to diverse situations that arise; and understand potential liability issues as well as common pitfalls.
Senior Stories Audio CD Here in Florida, like elsewhere throughout the United States, gambling opportunities have greatly increased. As seniors look for recreational activities, an increasing number are spending their time and money gambling. In some cases, they are experiencing serious problems with gambling late in life and often don t know where to go or turn for help. This audio CD tells the stories of four older adults who developed gambling problems later in life and what each of them did to get help to address the difficulties that they faced as a result of their gambling. Senior FOCUS Newsletter This senior specific newsletter provides readers with information on available population specific resources as well as insight into how gambling problems impact the older adult population and signs to look for in family or friends or for those providing senior specific care. MILITARY RESOURCES ACTIVE/RETIRED/FAMILIY MEMBERS/SERVICE PROVIDERS Combat Gambling Addiction Military Toolkit According to published reports, both active and retired military members and their families are susceptible to gambling problems. Every day troops are transitioning back into the communities out of active military duty due to service completion or retirement, a change in life conditions, or other circumstances. Similarly, military family members face numerous pressures, such as relocations and separations from loved ones. A gambling problem can surface for military personnel, veterans and their families when the need for a distraction or an escape becomes an unhealthy coping mechanism, routine or addiction. The good news is that compulsive gambling is treatable for those who seek and obtain help. Specifics regarding problem gambling and this population are provided in the toolkit Combat Gambling Addiction. The Toolkit includes a PowerPoint presentation for use in educational forums with health care professionals and others furnishing support to the military population. Available to download at:
