2 2018 Letter from the Chair I hope that all of you are enjoying a good start to a New Year. I am honored to serve as the Central North Carolina Section Chair for 2018 and to work with Dr. Margaret Kanipes, Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Honors Program at North Carolina A&T, as Chair-Elect. Margaret and I have been busy developing programming and events for the coming year. Our hope is that there will be something for everyone and that we can increase membership and member participation over the next few years. Our local ACS section provides a unique opportunity to meet others who work in the same profession and to find meaningful volunteer opportunities that positively impact our community. Margaret and I are looking forward to attending the ACS Leadership Development Institute in Dallas later in January. Though this professional development opportunity, we look forward to learning more about how our section can benefit from the many programs and the leadership provided by the national organization. One of the strengths of our section is the dedication of our volunteers. John Merle is continuing to serve as Secretary/Treasurer, Robert Yokley continues as our Councilor and has organized a strong and active Silver Circle Circle group of retired chemists. TJ Mayer and Bill Eberle continue their service as directors for our section, with TJ leading efforts during Greensboro s Big Sweep and Bill s tireless dedication as newsletter editor and Poster-Vendor Night organizer. Ed Robinson will serve the section as its Alternate Councilor. Our recently formed advisory committee of past chairs is a tremendous asset to sustain initiatives and programming in our section. Our long-term volunteers are invaluable to our local section. However, the CNC-ACS benefits even more when new people bring innovative and diverse perspectives to the organization. We want everyone to feel welcome at our local section meetings, and we encourage all of you to think about how your talents and experience can enhance the impact that CNC-ACS has on colleagues, students and our community. Now more than ever, as chemists, we need to be advocates for science and education in our community. What can you do to help? Our section benefits from the businesses and academic institutions prevalent in this region. We are fortunate to have chemists with a broad range of experience (industry and academia) and also to have chemistry students at all phases of their education: in high school, studying at community colleges, working toward an undergraduate degree, and pursuing graduate and post-graduate education. The Central NC Section is a network for all of these constituencies. From the ACS website- Local sections allow you to: connect with other chemists and chemical engineers in your geographic area, enhance your professional development, build leadership skills, affect change in your local community through outreach and contribute to the public's understanding of chemistry in your community. Please consider taking advantage of your ACS membership by working more closely with your local section. I look forward to meeting new colleagues and to working with our current team of dedicated volunteers. My goal is to strengthen and support the work that has been done in the past and to build new opportunities for our membership.

3 January Section Meeting: Dr Jing Le, Salem College Title: Should I have a cup of coffee? Abstract: Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in North America. The benefits of drinking coffee have been speculated and doubted. This talk is a literature study of the pros and cons of drinking coffee. It will look into the correlations between drinking coffee and the neurological diseases, cardiovascular diseases, blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. It will also look into the possible compounds in coffee, to which the effects may be attributed. Author Bio: Jing Ye was born in a small city in southwest China. She graduated from Guizhou University with a bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering. Having discovered that she was more interested in aspects of science outside of engineering, she next enrolled in the Organic Chemistry graduate program at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John, Canada, where she studied nanomaterial science. While in Canada, she developed an appreciation for how chemistry can help improve public health. She decided to complete her graduate training in Biochemistry and transferred to the Biochemistry graduate program at Florida Atlantic University, USA, where she obtained her Ph.D. She has been working at Salem College as Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry since Dear Senior Chemists, Senior Chemist News - Robert Yokley Our 2018 kick-off meeting will take place at Syngenta (room L-1101) in Greensboro the evening of January 23, Mark your calendars to reserve this date. Please bring a dish to share for the pot-luck dinner - the entrée purchase will come from the Senior Chemists budget. Perhaps Scottish lobster, Devon crab, Beluga caviar, white truffles, Foie gras, and Cheetos. Got your attention, huh? This will be a planning meeting for 2018 so bring your ideas and suggestions for meetings, activities, day trips, etc. Phyllis and I hope everyone has a very merry Christmas and the best new year EVER! 4 Poster Vendor Night News Mark your calendars for the CNC-ACS 18th Annual Poster Vendor Night (PVN). PVN will be moving back to Syngenta this year on Tuesday, April 10th from 3pm to 7pm. After many years of volunteering for PVN, new work opportunities has taken Jill Tierney away from the Central NC section. This year, the poster portion will be coordinated by Sarah Sihvonen and the vendor side of the event will be coordinated by Mandy Stauffer. Look forward to receiving further information in the near future on the local section s biggest event of the year.
