The 2014 APG conference was awesome! If you missed it, you missed some great speakers and amazing networking opportunities. Twenty-six airport purchasing professionals attended this year representing seventeen airports with most staying for the NIGP Forum as well. We also did our first fly-buy event which the vendors loved, and all of us got to enjoy a great special event. Carrie and Cindy did a great job putting the conference together. Several awards were handed out, including: 2014 Inspiration Award-Theresa Webb 2014 Above and Beyond Carrie Roberts 2014 Volunteer of the Year-Michal Durden 2014 David Wagner Distinguished Service Award-Erin Henderson Sherri Himelstein was voted in as the new Public Relations Director and will be doing our newsletter as well as other duties. She will welcome anything that you can send to her. Bill Kirwin has agreed to take over the Pro-D chair when Carrie departs for a new job in Alabama and Cindy has agreed to assist him (thank you Bill and Cindy). The rest of the Board members all agreed to stay (a BIG thank you to them). Lots of new friends and networking connections were made at both the APG and NIGP events. I m hoping we will be welcoming several new airports to our group in the coming months!! Please help us keep the value of APG spreading out to more and more airports. It only helps us increase our networking value to each other. APG now has its own Group on Linkedin, feel free to join! Denise Denise K Schneider, CPPO, CPPB, C.P.M., C.M.

Airport Purchasing Group September 2014 MESSAGE FROM THE Vice President APG held elections in August for the Professional Development, Web Site, Co-op Alliance and Public Relation positions. I am pleased to welcome back for another term Carrie Roberts (Pro D Co-chair), Karen Hatten (Web), and Cherri Alexander (Co-op). APG welcomes two new members to the Board, Bill Kirwin, CPPO, CPPB, Manager, Contracts & Procurement for Columbus Regional Airport Authority and Sherri Himelstein, CPPB, CPP, Purchasing Manager for Burbank-Glendale- Pasadena Airport Authority. Bill will serve as the Professional Development Co-Chair and Sherri will serve as the Public Relations Director. Thank you for your willingness to give your time in supporting APG! CONGRATULATIONS! APG s very own Denise Schneider was the recipient of NIGP s 2014 Professional Purchasing Manager of the Year award. This award recognizes management professionals who have made significant contributions to purchasing, professional development, their entity, their chapter, and NIGP. Denise is an individual that goes above-and-beyond for both the profession and APG. Under Denise s leadership, she and the Board have increased APG membership agencies from 36 to 62, representing airports in the United States, Canada and Europe. Attendance to the annual APG conference has doubled due to the importance she has placed on providing sessions that emphasize procurement best practices, recognized purchasing methodologies, and airport collaboration opportunities. In addition to engaging membership, Denise has worked with the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and the Airports Council International- North America (ACI-NA) to establish relationships with APG. One of AAAE s many initiatives is helping airports meet operational/regulatory challenges with products and services tailored to unique aviation needs. ACI-NA supports aviation related businesses that supply goods and services to airports. Relationships with these associations are imperative to ensure procurement best practices are understood and implemented across the airport industry. Due to Denise s efforts, APG leadership has taught procurement related classes at AAAE conferences. Way to go Denise, we are proud of you and thank you for all you do for APG!!!! THANK YOU! September begins a new year for the APG Board. I would like to thank the 2014 APG Officers and Board of Directors for their time, contributions, and dedication. APG is strictly a volunteer organization and at a time where we all are required to do more with less, it is extraordinary to have individuals willing to give of themselves. Officers and Directors, you are greatly appreciated! Tracy L. Osborne, CPPB APG Vice President Page 2

TREASURER REPORT Beg. Balance: $25, YTD Income: $11, YTD Expenses: $10, Ending Balance: $26, Michal Durden, CPPB APG Treasurer MEMBERSHIP REPORT We were delighted to have several new faces at our sessions in Philadelphia. Many of you were APG members participating in the combined NIGP sessions. However, several airports were new to our organization, and we will be inviting them to our membership network. If you obtained business contact information from an airport representative new to APG, please forward the information to my attention. During the next couple of months, I will be following up with some of these new faces in an effort to increase our membership pool. If you have not attended the APG portion of the annual conference, I encourage you to join us next year in Kansas City. The opportunities to establish a great purchasing network base are unparalleled! As always, if you have any questions regarding your membership, please feel free to me a hakes@fwairport.com Laura Hakes Membership Chair Page 3

2014 David Wagner Distinguished Service Award APG CONFERENCE AWARDS Erin Henderson David Wagner started the Airport Purchasing Group in 1998 as a group specifically designed for Airport Purchasing Officials. The Airport Purchasing Group is a way for Airports to share specifications, ask for help on airport specific topics, obtain education at an annual conference and is an avenue for Airports to network with each other. APG started off small and has since grown to over sixty participating Airports. APG is a one hundred percent volunteer run organization. The David Wagner Distinguished Service award is given to an APG member who displays the highest degree of dedication and service to the Airport Purchasing Group. This is the second David Wagner Distinguished Service Award to be given out. This year s recipient has been a member of APG for several years. This member is a behind the scenes person, who diligently and quietly gets the work done. This member offers assistance to APG before she is asked and even though she has had some health issues, continues to provide first rate service and is a volunteer of the highest caliber. This member works hard for her agency and still finds the time to do APG work. This person has helped us grow from 36 member agencies to over 60 member agencies as our Secretary and helps keep the Board on track by scheduling meetings and maintaining the minutes. I am very proud to present Erin Henderson with the David Wagner Distinguished Service Award. Page 5

APG CONFERENCE AWARDS 2014 Above & Beyond Award Carrie Roberts Carrie Roberts volunteered as the APG Pro-D chair two years ago. She has worked diligently to provide excellent conference speakers and has put together conferences that are both meaningful and educational. As part of her duties she needs to coordinate with NIGP Forum staff to ensure that speakers on the second day of our conference are also interesting to NIGP members who can choose to attend one of our classes (we work in conjunction with each other). She proposed and set up our first Fly-Buy event this year and did the research for the great location we have chosen to hold our special event at tonight. She is not only active in APG but she is also the President of the Central Florida Chapter of NIGP. She is a true purchasing professional and an asset to APG and we appreciate her dedication to our organization. Congratulations Carrie, you truly deserve the Above and Beyond Award. Page 6

APG CONFERENCE AWARDS 2014 Inspiration Award Theresa Webb Every President of a professional organization will tell you that they cannot do their job without the assistance of great volunteers and Board Members behind them. Our Public Relations Chair is actively involved in several professional purchasing organizations as an officer, an instructor or a Committee Chair and definitely is a purchasing go-to kind of person for advice or assistance. With all of these activities as well as assisting to revamp an entire Purchasing Department, she has still managed to find the time to pull us into the 21 st century. Our newsletter and brochures are professionally prepared and have really updated the appearance of our website. She has put together our Conference handout and had it professionally printed and bound. She is always willing to assist and help out Board members. I m sorry to see her step down from the Public Relations Chair and hope that she will consider coming back as an officer in the future. She inspires me to be a better President. I m happy to award Theresa Webb the 2014 Inspiration Award. Page 7

APG CONFERENCE AWARDS Volunteer of the Year Award Michal Durden This person has been a Board Member for several years and is always willing to pitch in and help anyone out. She is the APG Treasurer and maintains all of the APG financial information including paying our bills with checks and with the only p-card that our organization uses. She makes herself available to do this usually on the same day that the request is made. (Thank God someone is willing to do this!). She switched us to a new p-card payment processing site to assist members renewing their membership at a considerable saving to APG. She worked with Chapter Manager and our Website Chair to update our website, and attended the Chapter Manager User Group meeting. She is working with the accountant to ensure that we are following all of the IRS rules. The Airport Purchasing Group is in the best financial shape ever as an organization. I m happy to present Michal Durden with the Volunteer of the Year award. Page 8

Airport Purchasing Group September 2014 New Board & Committee Members Bill Kirwin, CPPO, CPPB New Pro Development Co-Chair Sherri Himelstein, CPPB, CPP New Public Relations Chair Member Articles My first APG Conference An airport sponsored trip to Philadelphia? Of course, I m in! Remind me again, why are we going? I suppose these were not the noblest thoughts to have, but they were among my initial thoughts. The ironic thing about intention is that it is often runs contrary to reality. Sometimes this leads to disappointment, but sometimes it leads to being pleasantly surprised; this is a story about the latter. Page 9 I suppose that every sector of procurement has its own little nuances and clichés, but there is something about airport purchasing that makes it unique. Perhaps it was best highlighted in Carrie and Cindy s game of Do You Have What It Takes to be an Airport Purchasing Agent? Or perhaps it was Justina s presentation on the commercial spaceport in Houston. Then again it could ve been Karen s presentation of Vancouver s manufacturing of Automated Passport Control solutions. Being thrust into a world filled with acronyms and whatchamacallits is a tough enough job, but add with that the call to constantly innovate, that is a tall order for only an elite few: airport procurement specialists. Even though procurement binds us all, maybe that is why there is a special comradery that exists between airport procurement specialists. So what do I think about my first APG conference? Answer: An essential annual support group. By Rocky Tindage, Business Analyst Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority
