1 Chartered in 1987 Chattanooga Edition Message from the President Our October 9 th meeting will be a business meeting to Install the Board of Directors and Officers. Please join us at The Walden Club at 5:30 pm for networking and 6:00 pm for our business meeting. EWI of Chattanooga had 7 representatives attend our annual Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting (LCAM) in Raleigh NC September 19 th 22 nd. We celebrated EWI s 80 th Anniversary and made many wonderful connections with other chapter representatives. We also attended a Reading Rally, the EWI Academy of Leadership, and participated in a Town Hall Meeting to share best practices with other chapter leaders. During the Annual Meeting we voted to change our bylaws for a member in transition and added a new class of membership to include students. We will go into more details about these items at our October meeting. Do you know the saying Well-behaved women rarely make history? Well, we made history by winning an award. And, we behaved pretty well! Our award was for membership retention of 96.4%. I was extremely honored to accept this award on behalf of your membership and your dedication to our chapter. This will be my last meeting as President. Thank you for the honor of being your president. On behalf of your Board of Directors, I would like to thank each of you for your support of EWI of Chattanooga. We have made many wonderful memories and are very grateful for your membership and participation in this organization! I will be retiring, with 27 years of service, from Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union on November 30 th But, I m not retiring from EWI. I ve been committed to EWI of Chattanooga for 24 years and had so much fun doing it! I will continue my membership. I would like to ask you to be committed to EWI of Chattanooga and have fun doing it. Serve the purpose & mission of EWI; Careers, Connections, and Communities. This organization will bring out the best in you through personal and professional development. Please accept my extreme gratitude for your support of EWI of Chattanooga and of me. 4 FUNDRAISING NEWS Let s Go Nuts Ladies! Doesn t this wonderful fall weather make you want a homemade Pecan Pie? How about an afternoon snack of Double Dipped Chocolate Covered Peanuts? Spread the word with your family, friends, and co-workers. Orders are due by noon, October 26, 2018 All proceeds from the nuts fundraiser will support scholarships for our EWI ASIST (Adult Students in Scholastic Transition) program with Southern Adventist University. Please the total amounts of nuts you need no later than noon on Friday, October 26, Nuts will be delivered to us before Thanksgiving. Feel free to contact me if you have questions. 7 5 Facts Everyone Should Know About Ovarian Cancer Fact 1: All women are at risk for ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is diagnosed annually in nearly a quarter of a million women globally, and is responsible for 140,000 deaths each year. Unlike some other cancers, developing and developed nations are similarly affected by the disease. It is important to be aware of symptoms, risk factors and your family history on both your father s and mother s side of the family. Fact 2: Awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer may enable women to receive an earlier diagnosis, when the disease is more easily treatable. If a woman experiences one or more of the following symptoms frequently it is important that she discuss them with her doctor. Increased abdominal size / persistent bloating (not bloating that comes and goes) Difficulty eating/feeling full quickly Abdominal or pelvic pain Needing to pass urine more urgently or more frequently While these symptoms are often associated with more common and less serious conditions it is better to check them out. Fact 3: Diagnosis at an early stage vastly improves a woman s chance of survival When ovarian cancer is detected at an early stage, when the cancer remains confined to the ovary, up to 90% of women are likely to survive for more than five years (the length of time over which survival is normally measured when assessing cancer treatment). A woman who has symptoms suggestive of ovarian cancer should be referred directly to a specialist to obtain an accurate diagnosis. If she is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, a gynecologic oncologist, who is a specialist who treats women s cancers, is the best person to manage her care. Fact 4: Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage Ovarian cancer is frequently diagnosed when the cancer is already at an advanced stage and women often delay seeking help. This may be because the woman thinks her symptoms are due to other more common issues or confused with other common stomach and digestive complaints. Doctors also often initially suspect less serious causes for the symptoms, but the frequency of symptoms should help them know when to consider ovarian cancer, that is why using a symptom diary might be helpful. Fact 5: Many women mistakenly believe a Pap test will detect ovarian cancer. It does not. It detects pre-cancerous changes to cells of the cervix, which is treated much more successfully than ovarian cancer. 7 Page
