As we come to a close of our Amarillo Women s Network program year, I find myself with gratitude and joy: Gratitude that the women members of our organization have allowed me to serve as your president for the last two years and for the board members who gave so, and some still give, so much of themselves, their time and talents to make AWN a viable and vibrant organization and civic group; also, with joy when I think of the good times we ve had working towards our goals of helping women advance and reach their goals, and for the new, incoming board members. The new members of our board of directors are all accomplished women in their own right, who have talents to share with us and, I am confident, will lead us to meaningful programs that will help our membership grow both in numbers and in personal achievement. Above all, however, I know that they will continue to make friendships and support one another. Katrina Atkins, our incoming President, has a can-do, servant-leader spirit and some wonderful ideas for growing our organization. Lynn Burns, who for so long served as an advisor to our board, will keep us straight as the new treasurer. I could not have served without Lynn s advice and support and I am grateful to her. I have the same feelings for Phyllis Nickum, our immediate pastpresident until now, who shares of her talents and knowledge so freely: I couldn t have been effective without her guidance. I am also very happy that Selena Fogg who served as our treasurer will now take over and share the VP for Membership role with DiAnna Young. All the new board members are women of accomplishment and I look forward to getting to know them better. I am particularly excited for our upcoming meetings of April 24 th, with the Networking event at our monthly luncheon and the Annual Meeting on May 12 th. The April event will be in honor of our members. All of you will have an opportunity to highlight your business or organization, and eat lunch at a 50% discount courtesy of AWN. At our Annual Meeting, we will get to hear from an outstanding young woman who serves the people of Potter County as a commissioner, Mercy Murguia. We will also honor the scholars who have won our AWN college scholarships. I hope to see you all there! I am not going to say Farewell as the outgoing president of AWN; I am going to say See you soon at our April luncheon and our Annual Meeting! 4 April 2015 AWN Newsletter Page 4 AWN Annual Meeting May 12th (Tuesday) OVERCOMING ADVERSITY SPEAKER: POTTER COUNTY COMMISSIONER: MERCY MURGUIA Commissioner Murguia represents Precinct Two which predominately includes the East and Northeast sections of the county. The Commissioner also represents sections of Downtown Amarillo. The majority of the precinct is within the city proper of Amarillo, Texas. She is a lifelong resident of the precinct in which she represents. She has two children, Nathaniel and Jaicee. She attributes her devotion and work ethic to the county and precinct to her grandparents who were small business owners, Annie and Abe Garcia. She holds a Master of Business Administration from West Texas A&M University. Her areas of concentration include Finance and Management. She graduated Magna Cum Laude. She currently has over 16 years experience in the healthcare industry and business sector. She is a prior member of the Amarillo YMCA Board of Directors and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. She is a current member of Los Barrios de Amarillo, Texas Leadership Women Board of Directors, and the Texas Association of Counties, Executive Leadership Council. Other recognitions include: Amarillo Chamber of Commerce (Top 20 under 40 Award Recipient), Distinguished Alumni - Honorary Alumni of Caprock High School, Girl Scouts of Texas-Oklahoma Plains Women of Distinction Connect Award, United Way Nomination Team Leader of the Year Award, United Way Loaned Executive of the Year, High Plains Spirit of the Year United Way, and Step Up To Success. Commissioner Murguia also serves as a keynote motivational speaker for high school and middle school students.

A RESERVATION MADE IS A RESERVATION PAID NOON MEETINGS REMINDER Our policy is that we require all reservations made for AWN noon meetings be paid regardless of whether or not you attend. This is because AWN must also pay the number of meals reserved with the Amarillo Club, even if that number is more than the actual attendance. While a reservation is not required to attend a meeting, we encourage and need our members to reserve for meetings so that we can obtain a close estimate of the number of people that will be attending in order to notify the club how many tables to set up. Reservations also allow us to give our speakers an idea of how many handouts and materials might be required for a meeting. We ask that you keep this policy in mind when you make reservations.
