1 Minutes WEActiveVol Meeting in Budapest, Hungary 20 th -21 st of April 2017 Day 1 Opening the meeting. Presenting the meeting goals and programme. Meeting objectives were: to develop the two questionnaires for the opinion polls; to conduct the workshop: how to promote volunteering among the Over 50s? to get familiar with good practices examples concerning the volunteering of the over 50 people; to discuss the current project-related issues. Participants: - VLO in Katowice, Poland - E-Seniors Association, France - Initiatives Network Association (Asociacija "Iniciatyvu tinklas"), Lithuania - Volunteer Centre (Centrum dobrovolníctva), Slovakia - Volunteer Centre (Centrul de Voluntariat Cluj-Napoca), Romania - Volunteering Hungary Centre of Social Innovation( Önkéntes Központ Alapítvány), Hungary- host organsation in cooperation with the TESZÜNK Senior Volunteer s Club - Local expert group invited for the meeting

2 Summary of the partnership group activities (VLO in Katowice) Second project meeting was held in Paris, of February 2017 The partnership group: gained information about the legal regulations and statistic data on volunteering in partner countries; presented different methods of work with the volunteers (in terms of trainings and recruitment); got familiar with activities of the French local expert group in the field of volunteering; participated in workshop about How to diagnose the predispositions of the over 50s to perform a voluntary work?; gained initial ideas about questionnaire assessing predisposition to perform volunteering; discussed the issue of project leaflet and brochure; discussed the current organisational asepects of the project Presentations from the Hungarian local experts Senior volunteering in Hungary, Presenter: Erzsébet Szokoli Aging society: in 2011, the number of residents 60 and older made up 25% of population; the percentage of older Hungarians is increasing by the year 2025, this age group will make up 30% of the country s population Volunteering rate by age: years 68%; year 15%; years - 12%; year 5% Active aging: spending leisure time in fruitful way; cultural engagement; staying on the labour market; necessity of giving enough information to seniors regarding their importance in the society; Not every organization is ready for volunteering (senior volunteering especially). Good practices: senior volunteer programs 1) Ujbuda 60+ Program, Presenter: Tamás Toldi

3 Programme of local authorities (11 th District), beginning in 2008 Since November 2008: recruiting volunteers, training and supporting them; Senior Media Workshop; it s voluntary and not a part of the social care system Community Building Subprogramme with aim of developing human relations and providing two-way information Presently, 130 volunteers in 6 districts Ujbuda 60+ Card 60+ Mental Health Programme; other Programmes: Cultural Programmes, In Clubs, SeniorAcademy Újbuda, Crime Prevention Programme 2) Senior Mentor Program, Presenter: Márton Aichelburg Civic Entreprises is addressing to two target groups: children who don t have the support of their parents/relatives; retired seniors who would be eager to do something meaningful Senior Mentor Programme brings older adults into public schools to improve reading abilities of schoolchildren, through one-to-one tutoring Existing for over 8 years, currently operates in 35 service sites in Hungary 3) Aladdin Program, Presenter: Anna Rácz International programme, funded by Erasmus plus; Coordinated by Elan Interculturel (FR); Participating countries: FR, HU, UK, NL, ES Goal: to develop a workshop format that enables seniors to share their knowledge, experiences with younger people Personal storytelling, intergenerational workshops between young and older people 4) Teszunk Senior Volunteer s Club, Presenter: Alíz Scholtz-Hibay Founded in 2013 with 70 members Scope of activity (organisation, arrangement, participation), Corporate volunteer programs, Pro bono volunteer programs, Other common volunteer programs Friends of elderly people program Common free time and cultural programs

4 Afternoon session: Leading discussion about the formats of the three questionnaires that are going to be developed in the framework of the project: - Questionnaire for the assessment of predisposition to perform a voluntary work (final decisions); - Developing the content of the two questionnaires for the purpose of the polling activities: 1) Questionnaire for opinion poll for people aged over 50: the aim is sharing opinions with volunteers over the age of 50 and those who haven t volunteered yet; what are the motivators and barriers for volunteering for people over 50? What are the further training needs that arise within this age group? 2) Questionnaire for opinion poll for representatives of organizations: the aim is sharing opinions with different entities organizing voluntary work what are the motivators and barriers for volunteering for people over 50?

5 DAY 2 Panel discussion with the members of the TESZÜNK Senior Volunteer Club 5 volunteers were attending this meeting. Topics: How to promote senior volunteering experiences, personal motivations, personal opinions about advertising, channels of dissemination The senior volunteers were asked the following questions: Quick introduction round. Previous professional background? Where do you volunteer currently? Why you choose this opportunity? What made / make you to volunteer? What is the best message to you? Which channels you use to get information on volunteering? Do you spread information on volunteering to other seniors? What type of promotion / messages work best for seniors? What is missing? Any tips or recommendation on future promotion for senior volunteers?

6 Quick introduction round. Previous professional background? Alíz, Marianna, Vera: background: national development agency, HR project development women, equality, environment in the national development program, international company with company program, Alíz: economist: at Malév airlines, Marinna: 3 years retired: export, import, marketing, office manager, Katrin: Worked at Hungarian state treasury, head of the department Agnes: economist, import with China, human rights court. Where do you volunteer currently? Why you choose this opportunity? Vera: Aladdin program, looked for real work, then nobody wanted her as a volunteer, was very happy for Aladdin program. Alíz: 10 years ago, Hospice foundation, 8 years ago found ÖKA, 3 years ago established the club Teszünk. Something is missing from my life. I hope that our lives became completer with volunteering. What s the opinion of your family? They are proud of me, grandchildren want to come with me, my husband needs some time for himself but he agrees, if you are happy its ok. The children understand it, my grandchildren are from 8-17 they do not need me that much. Marianna: Before I did not know anything about volunteering. I might need the help of volunteers one day. My son is mentally handicapped, he lives in a special home there I started volunteering. I presented that foundation there. I am still looking my path in this volunteering. I am looking for the best fitting volunteer tasks. I am open now for everything. Kata: I am very new. I became very lazy when I become pensioner, I started to feel that something is missing. I want to do something useful but where when and how. First I joined a church group but everybody was working the only volunteered on Sundays. Animal farms are far from my flat at last I found the website onkentes.hu, I read about TeSZÜNK club, I went to the next meeting I think this is a special group with very wide range of volunteer possibilities. I began to work with elderly people; I started to teach a little girl in mathematics.

7 Ágnes: organise the cultural life of the group we would like to make our life complete, I visit only old people in hospital. What made / make you to volunteer? What is the best message to you? Facebook was best for me, I was rejected at several places, cedrusnet, aladdin, It is really difficult to find. The message that could be for me: I am useful, I feel I am useful; my life could be more complete. To be useful. M soul became glad when I could do something useful. I learn much more from the teacher whom I visit. Useful, marketable knowledge I have needed by the society. Which channels you use to get information on volunteering? Important to get the message from someone who is already in volunteering where to start, which areas could you perhaps be needed. FB good, LikedIn more professional, local journals too political for any objective news. Face to face first of all. Is the best way. Personal example is the best. You can see the changes on the person who does it. Internet is good tool, local journal in our district is a good source, different websites. How people find he club mainly through the website of ÖKA. From the foundation of my son from there I receive info about volunteering. is better for me, face to face I forget everything, but it is important too. Volunteering is not for everybody friends and colleagues did not join, internet is a good way. Do you spread information on volunteering to other seniors? We chat, publish information on FB hoping someone will read it. As a member of a hiking club I chat there, nobody wanted to join so far. I speak about it to friends ex colleagues, all admire me but they don t want to follow me. Some friends told me I WORKED ENOUGH IN MY ACTIVE LIFE, I am very busy, if you do something for others you get more energy. But I was not so successful with my friends. People are different. Is there a common character for those who join the club? Life situation and the character. It s much more random, you have to find the right moment. Some are not trying. The club is really good: you can choose from very many different activities: I can do and choose whenever I want whatever I want to do. They don t have time for others apart from family; Hungarian people have serious health problems.

8 What type of promotion / messages work best for seniors? What is missing? When a child is born they get a starter box, maybe a retired box with leaflet in it In Hungary we are not prepared to become retired it could be a good idea to receive a list of organisations or programs which you can join when you retire from the national body. Place for blogs personal messages of volunteers on the Teszünk FB page, senior volunteer blog I could not find. It could make the younger ones understand also. Any tips or recommendation on future promotion for senior volunteers? Good to have mixed groups to pass the message from one generation to the other. Package is good idea to get in touch with HR department of companies. TV messages also could be good as elderly sit in front of the TV a lot. To give and accept help is very difficult for Hungarian people. Media is very important young people have celebs- when famous people show that they do volunteer work it can be a good way. Some conclusions - Being proud of their volunteering - Will to do something useful for the others - Building a community (they are preparing cultural programs) - Best ways for receiving info from volunteering: face-to-face, websites of the organizations, Facebook, local newspaper, blogs - Difficulty to promote volunteering among friends, family etc. - The majority admire them but they don t want to be part of this experience.

10 Work in a small groups and presenting ideas topics: 1. Where should we promote volunteering for senior people? - Facebook - Local news, local media - Volunteering centers - Internet and blogs - Events/charity events/markets - Senior class/3 rd age university - Leaflets - Churches 2. Who else can/could be our target group? Which tools could be used? - Corporation in companies for preparing active retirement - Medical services - Box for retired person - Local authorities - Church/priests

11 - Advertisement in public transports - TV programme 3. Attracting seniors - Welcoming young seniors - Face-to-face connections - Depends on interests, abilities, experiences, needs

12 4. How should local governments be reached? - Participating in meetings - Contacting responsible persons - Organizing joint events in community centers - Public health care institutions - Worker unions Strategic Partnership

13 Afternoon session: Technical, practical queries regarding the project (dissemination activities, printing the leaflet, the nearest project activities, project meeting in Lithuania). Summary of the evaluation of the meeting in France and evaluation of the meeting in Budapest.
