We want to hear from you! The Fraternal Health & Safety Initiative is available to all fraternities and sororities in a variety of structures and funding formats. The FHSI modules were not designed to be a group of one-and-done programs, rather they are part of a comprehensive effort. The more involved every organization is, the better off everyone will be collectively. As a united consortium delivering consistent education to its members, we can make an industry and community impact. James R. Favor & Company is pleased to offer extensive support materials online at FHSI.jrfco.com as part of the ongoing commitment to the health and safety of fraternal and campus communities. 2 COLLEGE IS A MAJOR LIFE TRANSITION HAZING Hazing is illegal in 44 states, and is a violation of Students come to college with great expectations. Along with new surroundings, friends, and freedom, every year many students find themselves faced with challenges that threaten their, and others', well-being and future success. The most pressing and dangerous social issues on college campuses today include alcohol and other drug abuse, sexual misconduct and assault, and hazing. college/university policy as well as fraternity and sorority policy. Hazing takes various forms, but typically involves physical risks or emotional/ psychological distress ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE (i.e., humiliation, intimidation, demeaning treatment, pressured alcohol consumption, etc.) 32.2% of students reported some form of public misconduct (such as trouble with police, fighting/arguing, DWI/DUI, vandalism, etc.) at least once during the past year as a result of drinking or drug use. SEXUAL MISCONDUCT 3 in % of students reported experiencing some kind of personal problems (such as suicide ideation, being hurt or injured, trying unsuccessfully to stop using alcohol, sexual assault, etc.) at least once during the past year as a result of drinking or drug use. 3 WHAT IS THE FRATERNAL HEALTH AND SAFETY INITIATIVE? The Fraternal Health & Safety Initiative is an ongoing effort to address health and safety issues for fraternal organizations by creating a culture of support, safety, and intervention. It is not a "one-and-done" program. It is a change to the conversation, mindset, and culture within chapters and communities. Its development was rooted in research and an intimate understanding of today s campus trends and issues. Several leading experts and consultants weighed in on the process and vetted the resulting curriculum. Involved Underwriters at Lloyd s of London, the worldwide leading provider of insurance and risk management, have recognized the FHSI for its innovative and proactive approach. The FHSI fosters organizational and individual development, supported by interactive presentations grounded in the latest research, and facilitated by highly trained individuals. The interactive education sessions are purposefully developed to engage members in chapter-specific discussions while opening peer-to-peer lines of communication, and strengthening commitments to hold each other to their organizational standards. Across the FHSI s four modules (focused on three main topics: sexual misconduct, abuse of alcohol and other drugs, and hazing), the curriculum features a consistent bystander intervention model to help students recognize, diagnose, and intervene in potentially harmful situations. Each module also emphasizes informed decision-making, evaluation of risks and consequences, and challenges undergraduates to rethink their actions through the lens of their organization s values. FHSI s multiple touch point programming includes: IN-PERSON CHAPTER EDUCATION PEER-TO-PEER EDUCATION CAMPUS STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT POSTER CAMPAIGN SOCIAL MEDIA MESSAGING
4 LIVING YOUR ORGANIZATION'S VALUES Fraternities and sororities value brotherhood, sisterhood, and a sense of belonging. A goal of the FHSI is to provide committed fraternities and sororities the tools and resources to help their members make more intentional decisions to protect their brothers and sisters, guests, and organizations. Recognizing actions or inactions can have lifetime implications, the FHSI curriculum equips members to create a culture of support, safety, and intervention within their chapters, campuses, and communities. James R. Favor & Company has lived and breathed the complex risk management needs of college-based fraternal organizations for more than 35 years. In 2013, James R. Favor & Company brought together comprehensive research and some of the sharpest minds in collegiate risk management to create the Fraternal Health and Safety Initiative. 6 HOW IS FHSI MAKING AN IMPACT? By creating a culture of support, safety, and intervention, the FHSI in turn hopes to reduce the frequency and severity of harmful incidents in our community. The Fraternal Health & Safety Initiative is designed to help empower members to be change agents not only on campus, but beyond college life. FRATERNITY AND SORORITY MEMBERS WHO COMPLETED THE TAKING A STAND: PREVENTING SEXUAL MISCONDUCT ON CAMPUS MODULE: To date, the FHSI Consortium of ten leading international and national fraternities and sororities represents approximately 100,000 undergraduate men and women at more than 550 college campuses. TESTIMONIALS We recognize now is the time for our women to use their voices to address [sexual misconduct]. Through the FHSI s impact, we arechallenging our chapters to serve as catalysts for creating safer campuses. Tammie Pinkston, former Alpha Delta Pi Sorority International President 88% felt more empowered to serve as a campus and fraternal leader in addressing sexual misconduct within their community 91% felt more equipped to address actions of their brothers and sisters that could place them at-risk for sexual assault I commit to treat men and women with renewed respect and to use a yes means yes perspective, rather than a no means no perspective. FRATERNITY MEMBERS WHO COMPLETED THE CHOICES MODULE: Sigma Chi member I was afraid beforehand that it would be difficult for the facilitator to get the chapter to participate, but it went extremely well and there was actually a good amount of productive participation, I was very pleased with how it went. Pi Kappa Alpha member 97% felt more knowledgeable about what action to take and would do it if a friend passed out from drinking 88% recommended the program be provided to new members in the future
