2 a day in her shoes Well-being, risk prevention and harm reduction are the cornerstones of ensuring the vitality of our individual members, campuses, communities and sisterhood at large. They are so much more than buzzwords. The reality of life for young adults is more than stereotypes or media spin. is the second leading #2Suicide cause of death among college students. 25% of the adult population in the U.S. experiences a mental health disorder in a given year. With 13.9 suicides per day of those between 15 and 24 years old, it s a mental health epidemic. It is a campus safety crisis knowing the likelihood that one in five female students will be sexually assaulted. We are staring down threats to the pursuit of education, a denial of the gift to dream and grow and aspire to be. Up to 25% of all college students struggle with an eating disorder. 1,825 college students die each year from alcohol-related injuries. 1in5 1in 16 are sexually assaulted while in college. Members of all ages and stages need togetherness and mutual support now more than ever. But there is something we want you to know. As we consider the sobering statistics, the actions our organization is taking, the donors and funding making the solutions possible, let s not once forget the change agents we get to be for one another. Together. Adderall and other stimulants are increasing in popularity among college students due to pressure to meet academic requirements. 1in5 college students reports academic consequences from drinking. 60% of students don t seek help for mental health. As one of the most significant women s organizations in the world, we are always striving to lead the way toward solutions that improve the lives of our members and set an example for others. Our approach to education is not just for new members or alumna members or members in the midst of their journeys; it s for all of us, at every stage, working to become better Kappas and better women. It is designed to highlight those things we hold dear our core values, principles, structure and history. Education solidifies our position as a leader in the Panhellenic world and ensures that the values and strengths of our Founders will continue to be studied and promoted in perpetuity. 3 sisters helping sisters How is Kappa offering support? Picture this. Every year, each of our 141 chapters will receive an in-person program covering mental health, alcohol and substance abuse prevention, or human dignity. These programs fall into two of the seven Pillars of Education: well-being and human dignity. Those subjects that are not facilitated in person in a given year will be required educational programming for the chapter to present with guidance from proven curriculum and support from the Fraternity's Department of Education and Training. How? Over $800,000 in grants from the Kappa Foundation. Behind Happy Faces is our new mental health curriculum. The goal is to give students the tools they need to address mental health effectively by providing a more complete education about brain development, coping mechanisms, and the important steps to help a friend in crisis. The program utilizes short, highly creative, engaging videos to expose students to the necessary information. The lesson plans that follow each video have been constructed to maximize retention and improve students emotional relationships with themselves and others. This system is designed to deliver information in a short timeframe in order to meet students where they are in the culture that they live. This program is also going to be available to alumnae associations to mental health concerns are not confined to one age group. Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP) stands out in its relevance to our members because it acknowledges that college students drink. Rather than try to impose abstinence, ASTP recognizes that any steps toward reduced risk are steps in the right direction. The goal of ASTP is to educate about alcohol-related behavior while increasing members' interest in critically examining their drinking patterns and eventually implementing the skills they learn. In doing so, members can minimize the potential negative consequences through prevention, reduced consumption or abstinence. EME (Every Member Education) Trainers will make upward of 165 visits to chapters and alumnae associations this year. These women are trained facilitators on a variety of applicable topics, and many will also be equipped with mental health and substance abuse education training. EME Trainers are able to address chapter or association issues, such as engagement, critical problem-solving and leadership. Not only do they provide crucial education, but as alumnae, the partnership encourages mutual support between collegians and Kappas of all ages and backgrounds.

4 every member education Leadership, sisterhood, intellectual development, well-being, community responsibility, human dignity & heritage. The Pillars of Education play an important role in every Kappa s membership experience. They are the crux of sisterhood. They are the true characteristics of sorority. But beyond the college experience, these simply become pillars of life. These interconnected pieces play an important role in navigating relationships as well as caring for yourself and others in a career and in the pursuit of a fulfilling life. Every Member Education Kappa s Every Member Education gives you the tools you need when you need them. For collegians, we focus on how to lead as an officer and work with others. As members move into their senior year and look on to interviews, jobs, big moves and more, we offer them a series about how to address stress, ways to be financially responsible, and how to get your foot in the door with a stellar résumé. Every Member Education provides both in-person education opportunities and online learning opportunities located in the Every Member Education Learning Portal. 10,600 Kappas have accessed the EME Learning Portal since its launch in August There are now 53 available courses! Next year, we will begin developing online education for alumnae that looks at further developing life skills, career development, and personal finance skills. Not Anymore Another program provided through this upgraded online experience is Not Anymore. Not Anymore addresses the pivotal issues of sexual assault, personal safety and how to help one another. It is successful because it includes research-based information, interactive and realistic skill-building scenarios, and risk awareness and reduction strategies. It helps women understand how to address root causes. 4,321 Kappas have completed Not Anymore through EME. I appreciate that this program was honest and that it taught this content in an engaging and direct way. Although it was difficult to listen to the stories of the survivors, they were impactful and necessary to fully understanding the emotional impact of sexual assault. 5 the diversity and inclusion task force The Diversity and Inclusion Task Force will begin its work in fall 2017 under the leadership of Andrea Martinez Frey, Connecticut. It will be guided by the following charge: To evaluate Kappa s current Human Dignity and Membership Position Statements and Fraternity documents relating to membership; Identify opportunities in (a) membership, (b) leadership, and (c) programming, and make recommendations to address; Identify methods to actively diversify membership and create inclusive environments. Andrea Martinez Frey, Connecticut With funding from the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation, we will be utilizing an expert in the field of diversity and inclusion who will provide resources and information to the task force throughout its study of this critical issue. GreekLifeEDU In addition to our ongoing programming, new members will participate in GreekLifeEDU, an online program that addresses the critical issues of alcohol awareness, sexual assault prevention, dating and relationship violence, and hazing prevention. By leveraging trends and incorporating multiple evidence-based learning theories, GreekLifeEDU achieves behavior change objectives and helps members practice safer decision-making. Throughout this program, students are reminded of their values and strengths and challenged to consider ways to leverage them throughout different interactive scenarios. "I am incredibly grateful for this amazing opportunity to work with such a powerful group to dissect the issues and explore opportunities for the Fraternity to be at the forefront of this issue and truly infuse the message of inclusivity and community to all members and alumnae." Convention 2018 The Foundation is also funding three phenomenal keynote speakers! Ross Szabo Mental Health Lori Hart Engagement Lawrence Ross Diversity Szabo is the co-author of Behind Happy Faces: Taking Charge of Your Mental Health and a blogger for The Huffington Post. His tremendous efforts in the mental health field have led to him to receive a 2010 Didi Hirsch Erasing the Stigma Leadership Award and the 2012 Changing Minds Award. Dr. Hart is an avid participant in the Greek-letter community and has served Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity in a variety of roles. She currently works as the director of educational initiatives for Holmes Murphy Fraternal Practice. Ross has lectured at over 600 colleges and universities, speaking about issues of fraternalism, student development, and fraternity and sorority hazing. He s written commentaries, and he has been interviewed by The Root, The Grio, the Los Angeles Times, the BBC, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, MSNBC, CNN, and other publications.
