2 The service Introduction The care service may be provided to a maximum of 6 children under the age of 16 years, of whom no more than 3 are not yet attending primary school and no more than 1 is less than 12 months. Numbers are inclusive of the children of the childminder's family and household. Overnight care cannot be provided. The childminder operates her service from her home in a residential area of Kinross within easy walking distance of a primary school and nursery, play park, shops and other local amenities. Within her home she provides a large play area inside and out. Children enjoy messy activities, arts and crafts and imaginative play and they can choose what they would like to play with. We saw that the childminder was providing a happy, safe and warm environment encouraging a healthy lifestyle with interesting learning experiences indoors and in the community. What we did during our inspection We compiled this report following an unannounced inspection which took place between and on 29 September The inspection was carried out by one early years inspector from the Care Inspectorate who gave feedback by telephone after the children had gone home on 2 October During this inspection we spoke to the childminder and each of the children present. We observed the childminder caring for the children and looked at a selection of documents including children's records, attendance records the SHANARRI folder, a daily diary, medication records and accident records. We check services are meeting the principles of Getting it right for every child (also known as GIRFEC). Scotland's national approach to improving outcomes and wellbeing for children by offering the right help at the right time from the right people. It supports children and their parent(s) to work with the services that can help them. There are eight wellbeing indicators at the heart of GIRFEC. They are: safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included. They are referred to as the SHANARRI wellbeing indicators. for Janice Reilly Childminding page 2 of 10

3 Views of people using the service The minded children were happy and confident with the childminder and played and chatted throughout the inspection. Comments included: "I was playing with Janice. X fell asleep." "We have to tidy up now." "One of us stapled the paper." "I'm thirsty." "Look I'm making a rainbow with pink and blue." "We love to play in puddles." "We go to the shops and to the park and to see the fish at Dobbies. When we went to Dobbiers we drawed and played outside and playing on the see saw. There was a purple sea monster with a crab." We sent out three Care Inspectorate Questionnaires prior to the writing of the report and all were returned prior to the writing of this report. Parent's comments included: "Janice would let me know via text or verbally when dropping my child off of any changes that would affect her." "Janice always gets the children outside for plenty fresh air - which in my opinion is very important." "They go to the park, library, café and toddlers." "A healthy snack is provided with treats only really given in the holidays." "Janice was very understanding and patient when toilet training my child. She recognised her fears and kept me updated with her progress." "Toys are age appropriate and varied. They are rotated often and all appear clean." "Varied activities indoors and out. I like a lot of outdoor play. Also a lot of craft work." "Morning and afternoon snacks are provided by the childminder and tend to be fresh fruit or low sugar/salt foods. Water or milk only are given as requested by myself." "We have regular open discussions. Information is used to form daily routines. Contract review meetings. Daily diary for each (of the youngest) child(ren). Open discussions at drop off and pick up." "Constant chats at drop off and pick ups." Self assessment We received a completed self assessment document from the childminder prior to the inspection. She highlighted what she felt she did well and what she felt she could improve upon. What the service did well A welcoming and nurturing environment resulted in children feeling safe, secure and confident in the setting. Effective communication with parents resulted in agreement about the care and support to meet each child's changing needs. 4 What the service could do better The childminder should ensure that she keeps up to date with the latest best practice knowledge available on the Care Inspectorate Hub. 5 From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good 5 - Very Good not assessed 5 - Very Good Quality of care and support Findings from the inspection The childminder provided a very good standard of care and support for each of the children in her care. This resulted in the children having formed very good relationships with the childminder whose nurturing manner helped them feel confident and relaxed in her care. We observed that this childminder provided a very good standard of care and support which valued and respected the children and their families. This was supported by the feedback from parents and carers in the Care Inspectorate questionnaires. We saw the childminder offered a caring and happy environment with a variety of experiences within the home and in the community. The childminder provided positive adult child interactions supporting each child's individual needs and interests. As a result, we saw that each child was confident, relaxed and comfortable in the setting. The childminder completed individual care plans/folders for each child providing an outline of their development and achievements as well as their Next Steps. These were reviewed with parents six monthly to ensure that the service was meeting the children's needs and that children were progressing well. The childminder had a very good understanding of the SHANARRI wellbeing indicators and her SHANARRI folder showed a range of photographs demonstrating how she kept children safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included whilst in her service. The childminder supported children with their health and wellbeing providing healthy snacks and opportunities for active play. She demonstrated a knowledge and understanding of child protection and the need to record accidents and incidents. We saw that the childminder had updated her system for the recording of the administration of medication. Two further improvements should be made to the form noting the reason for the medication being given and the time when it was last administered, in line with current best practice to prevent children from possible risk of harm. 6 Recommendations Number of recommendations: 0 Grade: 5 - very good Quality of environment Findings from the inspection The way the childminder used the environment indoors and out was very good. Children were cared for in a warm, nurturing and relaxed environment that contributed positively to building their confidence and selfesteem. The premises were clean and tidy with children knowing to tidy toys from time to time to leave space to start their play once more. All equipment was clean, safe and age appropriate. The space available was maximised to meet children's needs. Underfloor heating helped ensure a nice warm environment for the children if they chose to play on the floor and colourful, interlocking, foam mats created a pleasant comfortable play surface for the children and supported them to achieve. The older children sat at the dining room table, within the play area, for meals, snack and craft activities and the younger ones were provided with a high chair. This meant that children could sit comfortably together to eat resulting in children benefitting from a social experience chatting with one another and with the childminder. In addition, the older children could enjoy craft activities at the high table keeping any dangers safely away from the younger children. We arrived as children were leaving for a picnic at the park and we heard from them that they liked playing in the fresh air. This contributed to a healthy and active lifestyle and helped keep them safe from harm. The local community supported children to be active through the use of parks, woodland walks and community groups such as Toddlers. 7 Quality of staffing This quality theme was not assessed. Quality of management and leadership Findings from the inspection We found that the service performed at a very good level for this theme. We saw from the Care Inspectorate Questionnaires given to parents for feedback and evaluation of the service that they felt included in the service and that their contribution was valued. Each one stated that they felt very happy with the service which they were receiving. The childminder told us that she tried to keep up with best practice and legislation by reading the magazines sent to her by the Care Inspectorate and by the Scottish Childminding Association, by reading widely and looking at bulletins from Perth and Kinross Council. As a result, she tried to keep abreast of what is happening in childcare and education around her. The childminder should ensure that she keeps up to date with the latest best practice knowledge available on the Care Inspectorate Hub. We suggested that the childminder use the Care Inspectorate publication 'My World Outdoors', and look at related best practice scenarios on the Care Inspectorate hub for ideas to supplement the outdoor experiences she was giving the children. This can be found at: improvement/my-world-outdoors/ The childminder could make use of 'The Loose Parts Toolkit' to develop her knowledge; available at We advised the childminder to submit a variation to remove old conditions from her certificate and to ensure an up to date certificate was displayed for parents to see. The childminder had not attended any child protection training since her original induction training four years ago to extend her knowledge so she should look for an opportunity to update this in the near future. The childminder described confidently what she would do if she had any child protection concerns. She had updated her first aid training so should be able to deal with minor injuries if they arose. We advised the childminder to submit a variation to remove old conditions form her certificate and to ensure an up to date certificate was displayed for parents to see.
