2 Our Mission To organize recovering individuals, families and friends into a collective voice to educate the public about the value of recovery from alcohol and other addictions. Our Vision MOAR envisions a society where addiction is treated as a significant public health issue and recovery is recognized as valuable to all our communities.
3 What does MOAR Do? v Teach MOAR Members to tell their Recovery Stories and to become Advocates for addiction prevention, treatment and recovery services. v Regional Coordinators hosting Recovery Action Meetings throughout the state v Addiction Recovery Education Access Services (AREAS) for people in Early Recovery v Speaking Out for Addiction Recovery (SOAR) project funded by SAMHSA to connect Recovery Community Organizations statewide v Peer Recovery Coaching Services through the Access To Recovery (ATR) program and OPTUM Healthcare v Building Community and Reducing Stigma with Public Events like our Annual Recovery Day Celebration in Boston! 3

6 Why Does MOAR Advocate for Recovery Support Services? v About 1,979 residents of Massachusetts died of unintentional opioid overdose in This is a 370% increase since 2010 and averages to more than 5 people dying per day v v v The most recent data (2013) show that only 19% people receiving addiction treatment services in the state received any outpatient treatment services. Massachusetts experiences over 3,000 acute care discharges from hospitals a year, but our inadequate community programs leave the majority of these individuals with no support on their continued path of recovery. There are 10 regionally based Peer Recovery Support Centers funded by the Department of Public Health s Bureau of Substance Abuse Services 6 Sources: MA DPH Q Statistics. 10 1 RECOVERY SUPPORT SERVICES CRITICAL COMPONENT Recovery communities and recovery support services are a critical component of ongoing care for people in recovery, that include residential recovery homes, recovery community centers, education-based recovery support, recovery industries and recovery ministries. Recovery Research Institute (2014) 2 SOLUTION- FOCUSED There is growing evidence that the central organizing construct guiding addiction treatment and the larger alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems arena is shifting from long-standing pathology and intervention paradigms toward a solution-focused recovery paradigm.
