1 RESOURCE LIST FOR REDUCING CLUTTER Presented by Elizabeth Barr & Gillian Howell

3 WHAT IS A RESOURCE LIST? The overall design is to provide referrals to other agencies to assist in the recovery of finding and keeping issues.
4 WHY HAVE A RESOURCE LIST? The resource list is helpful when you find yourself in a situation where you could use some guidance or assistance. Here are some examples of types of situations: How do I get rid of my broken TV? My landlord is trying to evict me. Who can help me? I don t know how to find resources on the computer. What should I do? I feel grief when I think of getting rid of my deceased mother s items. Am I the only one who feels this way? I can t stop buying more things. Where has my money gone? Sharon gives an example.
5 DIRECTION MHASF IS TAKING FOR RESOURCES Under construction Look for an upcoming link on MHASF s website for a list of additional resources. In the meantime, utilize the hardcopy distributed today of the Top 20 Staff picks.
6 CATEGORIES Clean-up services: Agencies who provide hands -on assistance with cleaning and organizing. Computer access: Classes and computer access for public use. Consignment store: a store that sells secondhand items on behalf of the original owner, who receives a percentage of the selling price. Disposal: including paper shredding. Donations (pick-up included for some): let your items help others! Emotional support for decluttering: support groups, phone-lines, & chat rooms to help with the emotions that may arise from decluttering. Legal assistance: if facing eviction, attorneys can help. Mental health: referrals to counselors & psychologists, etc. Money management: support in creating a spending plan, which can prevent creating more clutter. Social services: multi-service agencies that help with case management and an array of other resources.

8 COMPUTER ACCESS And Classes
9 Library cardholders may use branch computers for up to two hours per day for free. There are also various free computer classes, teaching adults & seniors how to use computers. SF PUBLIC LIBRARY
10 DISPOSAL OF ITEMS Including paper shredding
11 SF RECOLOGY Free curbside pickup of 10 large items & 10 boxes. Schedule pick-up once a year for apartment dwellers & twice a year for house residents.
12 DONATIONS/PICK-UP
13 THE ARC OF SAN FRANCISCO This agency will pick-up your curbside donations. They accept all kinds of small & large items to be resold to benefit persons with development disabilities.
14 EMOTIONAL SUPPORT For decluttering
15 This OCD Support Group is designed to also include people with gathering issues. Website provides search tools to find therapists specializing in treating clutter issues. OCD FOUNDATION
16 LEGAL ASSISTANCE
17 THE EVICTION DEFENSE COLLABORATIVE Assists in filing appropriate papers upon receipt of a summons and complaint (5-day notice) and an unlawful detainer. Provides one-time loans for housing payments.
18 MONEY MANAGEMENT
19 SOCIAL SECURITY PAYEE PROGRAM Social Security's Representative Payment Program provides financial management for persons who receive Social Security and SSI payments. A "payee" is assigned to the Soc. Sec. recipient who is in need of help in managing their finances.
20 SOCIAL SERVICES
21 ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES APS addresses various types of abuse (including selfneglect, such as cluttering) for elders & persons with disabilities. Social Workers can provide counseling, case management, financial guidance, and referral services.
22 GUEST SPEAKERS Clutterers Anonymous. Warmline at MHASF. Institute on Aging.
23 CLUTTERERS ANONYMOUS CLA is a 12-step recovery program for clutterers. Modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous. Face-to-face & real time telephone meetings. Follows a free peer-topeer model.
24 MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION OF SF MHASF provides specific services for persons with "gathering issues. The Warm Line is staffed by individuals with a wide range of mental health challenges & welcomes calls from "gatherers. Services are online and over the phone
25 THE INSTITUTE ON AGING IOA offers case management for seniors and persons with disabilities. Services include counseling, social services referrals, & money management. The Friendship Line is a 24-hour chat line providing emotional support.
26 IT S YOUR TURN! Please write down on the handout provided some of your favorite resources that have been helpful in your recovery. Maybe you ve used some of these resources, or maybe you ve only heard good things about them. It may be a resource we re aware of but please let us know anyway. We ll take five minutes to write down our ideas. You ll have the opportunity to talk about these resources later.
