It s all about the future. I particularly like the quote that says, to paraphrase: There s a reason the rearview window is so small while the windshield is so large. One looks to where we ve been and one looks to where we re going. Where we ve been defines who we are and, as such, we should learn from our past and let it help shape our future. Let s all move forward this year. Dates are already being examined and discussed for future events. Ohio SRD and IRD both have firm dates. Walks, health fairs, workshops and rallies are still in the planning stages. As soon as firm dates and locations are finalized I will report. I was pleased to read in the last issue of the TOPS News that the 2018 theme is to return to basics. What does returning to basics mean to you? For me, it is journaling consistently, exercising, weighing myself regularly and leaving that addicting Diet Coke on the store shelf and consuming water. As one member at my chapter s meeting stated, It means being more honest with myself. We often delude ourselves, don t we? TOPS is 70! Wouldn t Esther Manz be proud of how we ve grown (and shrunk), persevered and celebrated together through thick and thin? I came across her quote, Life is a battle. Just let us win the one on obesity. Mrs. Manz, we are still very much fighting the battle. 4 Volume 5; Issue 1 January 2018 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOPS 70 years young January 21, 2018 This month TOPS celebrates 70 years. I happened to have my chapter s program this week and decided to talk about our wonderful organization s birthday. I came across some interesting facts during my research and thought others might find them interesting also. The original name of our club was TOP ; however, when written up in the Milwaukee newspaper the reporter inadvertently added the s and they decided to keep the letter and have it stand for sensibly. TOPS was a feature article in the April 9, 1951 LIFE magazine (which featured Omar Bradley on the cover). The article was subtitled, A kind of Fat Ladies Non-Anonymous helps girls to fight for their figures. The non-anonymous alludes to the fact that the club was structured along the lines of Alcoholics Anonymous; however, weight is out there for all to see. The article in part stated, During the war, when she had a job in a Milwaukee brewery, it was the sensible custom of Mrs. Esther Manz to wear slacks. It was also the pleasant habit of her employer to call a short halt in midmorning and midafternoon and serve each employee a glass of the company product. Mrs. Manz had always been a bit overweight, and this kind treatment soon betrayed her. She found she was too fat to get into her slacks. The article went on to cover three pages in the magazine with the last page showing pictures of six ladies with their weights. This was all well and good; however, the pictures were placed on the same page as a girdle foundation advertisement that pictured a Jane Russell type model. Really? Two other observations from this article is the use of the word fat not just once but several times and the habit of the brewery serving their products during breaks. Neither would happen in today s society. Life published a follow up in the March 31, 1952 magazine stating that President Esther Manz says: LIFE s article got us members in 47 states. We got thousands of letters and our phone rang constantly for two weeks. Both articles can be read in their entirety by googling TIME LIFE. Esther Manz appeared on To Tell The Truth in 1963 and has her own Wikipedia page. She and our organization has been referenced in many books. Her obituary appeared in papers across the land.

5 DIGITAL VS BALANCE SCALES More and more chapters are moving away from the large upright scale (Balance Beam) to the smaller compact digital scale. The cost of the digital units have become much more economical and many are small enough to allow the Weight Recorder to carry back and forth to meetings without difficulty. Weight Reorders can log the weight onto a member s weight chart just as displayed on the digital readout; however, it can become confusing to members who have been used to hearing the quarter, half and three quarters in association with their weight. As one member stated to me this past week, They just want to know what they lost! If you are a visual person like myself, maybe the below chart will help to understand where each compares to the other. This is not exact...i leave that to my engineer husband.
