1 NEWSLETTER August 2015 Every child deserves a smile We welcome you to our August newsletter with a story to share Two surprise visitors arrived at the door of CCI just a couple of weeks ago, a gentleman and his adult daughter. He had gone to some trouble to locate us as the last address he had was our old one. Apparently he was a regular donor to Cleft Care some years ago but he had forgotten about us. Until he heard that an employee at his company had had a cleft child and needed help. And then he remembered So our staff are now in touch with the new cleft family, offering support as they do, and our old/new friends left a donation of Rp3 million and a promise not to forget us again. 2 PANTI WALUYO HOSPITAL A Sharing Experience 15 April 2015 Clara has developed a strong relationship with Panti Waluyo Hospital in Solo (a four hour train journey from Surabaya), supporting cleft patients and their families, helping them to prepare for surgery and giving information regarding after surgery care. This relatively new partnership has led to a new initiative: training nursing staff to better care for cleft patients. On April 15 Office Manager Clara, Patient Care Coordinator Endang, supported by Health Officer Lisha, gave a presentation to 19 nursing practitioners, doctors and Marketing staff. Clara spoke about Cleft Care, who we are and what we do, then Endang explained the practical side of our work, at the same time helping the nurses to understand the importance of specific care for cleft patients, including: nutrition, hygiene and wound care after surgery, the importance of proper use of the splints and how to carry children after surgery.

4 SIS SUPPORTS US AGAIN Thank you to Dian and the Parents & Teachers Association at Surabaya Intercultural School. They not only donated a substantial percentage from the entry ticket sales of their annual Spring Fair to CCI but also gave us a table free of charge. This was a great opportunity to interact with the public about our work and also solicit donations. Thank you to Clara and Emma, volunteer Gemma, and especially Mrs Rani Viswanath and students who helped collect donations on the day. Consequently, Clara and Emma gave a presentation, open to the public, continuing to improve the quality of the resources offered at the puskesmas and also educating the public about clefts.

5 SEKOLAH CIPUTRA FUND-RAISER The student leadership team at Sekolah Ciputra (OSIS) approached CCI recently to ask simply, Can we do a fund raising event for you? What a silly question! They had been looking for a local charity as part of the school s outreach program and liked what they saw on our website. Subsequently, a fun event Bubble Run, open to all, was held on Saturday morning May 23. We were very grateful to accept the Rp20,000,000 they raised. And they certainly had a fun, if wet morning. 6 A CHALLENGING CASE When we first heard about Ima in 2012, we knew she was two years old and had a cleft palate. However, when we made the home visit, we quickly realized that there were other problems. Not only was she underweight (7.6kgs) but we noticed that when she cried her nails were turning blue, a possible indication of heart issues. On questioning the family (her father was a farmer and her mother worked at a cigarette factory so she was often looked after by her grandmother) we discovered that Ima should have been having regular monthly check- ups with a cardiologist in Surabaya for the previous year or more. Unfortunately the family had not done this because they had been told that they were not eligible for Jamkesmas (government insurance). On our return to the office, we pursued this problem and finally were able to confirm that the child would get free treatment for health checks. We were then able to refer Ima to one of our medical partners who had experience with cleft surgery on children with heart defects. But first we had to address the problem of not only her weight but educate the parents on nutrition. Her diet needed to be a healthy one, not the snacks and chips she preferred to eat. At this stage, Ima went onto our free special milk program, (NPK) which we provided for the next three years as Ima was often ill and her weight fluctuated. The next problem was that she needed heart surgery, and Jamkesmas would not cover this. But help was available! We were able to make contact with Yayasan Sentosa Lestari in Sidoarjo which agreed not only to cover all the costs related to Ima s heart surgery but also sponsored 20 CCI cleft patients** including Ima! These costs included not only heart evaluations but ENT specialists and dental checks. Ima also needed teeth extractions. Finally Ima was ready for her heart surgery, which occurred successfully in December More monitoring and medication was needed until her palate surgery just recently in June, The result is very good. So this has been a long journey for Ima and her family and CCI but we have all persevered, not counting the cost. We have provided her with special milk for three years and, collaborating with other wonderful people, we have all helped her to become a healthy happy little girl, something her family could only dream about before they met CCI. ** This story was featured in our September 2013 newsletter.
