3 WELLNESS IN ACTION! Youth Night Live! In 2016, the Lions Club in Pasadena saw a need for a safe and accessible social/ recreational activity for youth in the small town. Located in Humber Valley, while close to larger centers of Corner Brook and Deer Lake, youth did not have access to a safe venue for socialization, recreation, fellowship and entertainment without the barriers of cost and transportation. The Lion s Club consulted a group of youth to help inform what would interest and appeal to young people in the town. This led to the development of Youth Night Youth at Pasadena Lion s Club Live Sessions on alternate Saturday evenings at the local Lion s Club. With funding from the WRWC, they initially invested in a blender, board games and darts. Youth that began attending were invited to participate in the planning of the next session, listening to youth input and nurturing young leaders. With support from the Lions, more youth took on leadership roles in planning, delivery and clean-up of the Youth Night Live Sessions. Session themes included board games, darts, jam sessions & open mic; over one Easter Break the youth held a full day game marathon providing socialization and fellowship, a meal together, music and much fun, laughter and comradery. For some participants, this experience has been their first exposure to grocery shopping, budgeting, using flyers to finds sales and meal plan accordingly. Several youth at Youth Night Live have confided that this is their only source of fresh fruit, yogurt and milk (ingredients for smoothies). While some youth attend regularly, Youth Night Live is a drop-in opportunity. Most events average between youth, which is a real success. Some of the youth involved in the original Youth Night Live project have transitioned into a Leo Club, a youth service organization affiliated with the Pasadena Lion s Club. More than twenty youth are members of this sustainable service club. Youth have raised money and put thousands of dollars back into the community. With this new capacity and resource support, the Leo Club meets every second Thursday; youth have official leadership and executive roles; they provide volunteer support and service to the community; they have provided community outreach to Open Door Café and winter clothing drives. Pasadena is a host community for many international students. Youth Night Live and the Leo Club has been a great way for them to meet and socialize with other youth in the town outside of school. The Pasadena Leo Club still recognizes the original need that sparked Youth Night Live and they are now the program supporters, not the Lions Club! Leos are actively reaching out to fellow youth in the community with Youth Night Live activities which remain open and free of charge to all youth in Pasadena. F a l l Page 3

4 Unlock the Potential of Food Food has limitless potential. Sure, food is used as nourishment for our bodies, but it also does so much more than that! Nutrition Month 2018 features the potential of food to fuel, discover, prevent, heal, and bring us together with the help of dietitians. Potential to fuel: Stay energized by planning nutritious snacks into your day. Healthy snacks can also help to maintain stable blood sugars and prevent overeating at meals. Potential to discover: Foster healthy eating habits in children by teaching them to shop and cook. Teaching children these important skills so young can lead to healthier eating habits. Children are also much more willing to try new foods if they were involved in making the recipe! Potential to prevent: Understand how food can help prevent chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Potential to heal: Learn how food can promote healing and how dietitians work in health care teams to make a difference. Dietitians educate about how nutrition can help prevent or manage certain conditions, and deliver reliable nutrition advice that is specific to your individual needs. Potential to bring us together: Enjoy the benefits of bringing families and friends together with food. To learn more about the potential of food, visit If you would like to try out some great new recipes that suit your mood and schedule, check out the Cookspiration website or download the app at Brianna Kean, Dietetic Intern, Western Health Healthy Eating Club Gros Morne Academy students from Grades 4-6 engaged in an innovative Healthy Eating Program this winter. Students successfully created a variety of food dishes with a cultural slant. Recipes were explored from around the world and students actually prepared designated meals from start to finish. The burritos did not go over well but the process of creating them was interesting to say the least! Students met on Wednesday of each week and learned about food safety and label reading, cultural eating habits, and healthy food. They prepared healthy meals such as beef stew, pancakes, beans, and various chicken dishes. Students were responsible for all aspects of the food preparation, serving, and clean up. The program was amazing! It provided students with food preparation skills and reinforced healthy eating habits! The Gros Morne Academy Healthy Eating Club was made possible with funding from the WRWC School Grants Program! Gros Morne Academy, Healthy Eating Club Members Page 4 W e l l n e s s I n A c t i o n
