1 Pastoral Council Regular Meeting St. Elizabeth Room October 16, 2018 Present: Fr. Dan Sanders, Fr. Matthew Jacob, Susan Arensmeier, Doug Borys, David Hession, Jim Karolewicz, Jim Kochan, Cathy Liska, Monica Misey, Joe Russell, Ken Sosnowski, Frederick Werkmeister. I. Meeting opened at 7:15PM with a reading of the upcoming Sunday gospel by Jim Karolewicz, reflection and personal sharing. II. Housekeeping Items a. Approval of September 18, 2018 Meeting Minutes Minutes of the June 19 Regular Pastoral Council Meeting were unanimously approved after a motion to approve by Joe and second by Cathy. b. First Quarter Financial Review (attached) the balance sheet and operating statement as of September 30, 2018 were distributed. David Hession commented there were no significant items to discuss and we are slightly ahead of the year to date budget. III. Commission Liaison Reports and Actions see attached. IV. Pastor Update and Miscellaneous Items a. Parish Life Night - next event will be held November 13 th. Ken is looking for a volunteer to open the session. b. Budget/Commission/Liaison Discussions Ken asked everyone to work with their commissions to review budget requests from the perspective of alignment with the parish mission as opposed to simply having been part of the historical budget. c. Amazing Parish Conference - occurring October th. Fr Dan, Fr. Matthew, John Clark, Monica Misey, Sue Martin and Bob Pauly will attend. d. High School Representative for Parish Council Jim Karolewicz reported Claire Looker, Matthew Patch and Raquel de Arriba have expressed interest. Fr. Dan suggested they be invited to Parish Life Night for introduction to the commission leaders and discernment with PC on November 13 th. e. Ministry of Discipleship Fr. Dan provided a revised description of Bob Pauly s duties (attached). Positive comments were provided by several members of the council on the work being done by Bob in the year he has been in the role. f. Ministry of Acolyte Ceremony John Shaughnessy will be installed on October 20 th at 1030 AM at the Cousins Center. g. Open Arms Free Clinic Annual Gala - will be held on December 7 th. h. Information/Calendar of Events for the 175 th Anniversary of the Archdiocese available on-line. i. Feedback on Witness Ministry During Mass Fr. Dan asked for feedback on the individuals who have spoken prior to homily on various topics. Feedback was positive and members indicated activities that allow parishioners to hear directly from people involved in various ministries are more effective than bulletin announcements or other communication approaches. j. Phase 2 Design Changes Fr. Dan distributed revised internal and external design drawings that have been completed, as well as a summary of revised cost estimates for the project. The next meeting of the building committee will be held on October 29 th. Fr Dan also communicated the demolition schedule of the existing worship space has been requested to begin April 28 th to allow completion of the renovations for Christmas masses on December 24 th. k. Welcoming the Refugee and Migrant as part of Respect Life month in October, these pamphlets will be distributed during masses. Fr. Dan discussed the importance of this issue given the changes occurring at the national level on immigration and the resulting impact on refugees and migrants. Page 1 of 9

2 l Parish Councils Congress will be held February 2, 2019 at the Cousins Center. Doug provided a copy of the agenda for the session, as well as a request for consultation on council topics (see attached). m. Frederick Werkmeister Relocation Frederick informed the council he was in the process of relocating to Spain and would be resigning from the council effective with this meeting. Members extended their good wishes to Frederick and thanked him for his contributions to Lumen Christi. Meeting closed with vespers at 8:45 PM. Respectfully submitted by Jim Karolewicz Commission Liaison Updates for Pastoral Council Meeting on 10/16/18 Human Concerns (Monica Misey and Cathy Liska) A three-part plan was made to respond to the clergy abuse crisis; listening session to be hosted by Fr. Dan on November 15 th at 7:00 PM in St. James Hall; tie-in with Advent Reconciliation service and invite expert guest speaker to Soup & Substance. Family Promise is set for October 28 th - November 3 rd. There is a training session 10/16 at 6:30 pm. Kathy Saiia will attend the New Parishioner Breakfast as the Human Concerns representative Marge Sebern will be the new chair of Human Concerns Catholic Formation (Susan Arensmeier) Alpha first session was held yesterday. We had 30 attendees, including a table of Spanish speakers. RCIA four people are preparing for confirmation. Formation Classes Amy and Lea are doing a great job getting things underway. Lumenators Amy is reinvigorating, holding meetings the 2 nd and 4 th Wednesday of each month. Theology of the Body Michael Mueller is piloting a series with the home school co-op and plans to implement the material into 9 th /10 th grade formation during the second semester. Freshman Retreat coming up on October 27 th at Camp Minikani Outreach Trips will occur in Oklahoma City and Morganton, NC New Childcare Space Tina opened for the 8:30 mass and is still looking for volunteers for that ministry. New Mom s Group Tina has started on Wednesday mornings Stewardship (MaryElise Cervelli) The New Parishioner Breakfast occupied the bulk of the Stewardship meeting this month. 23 families (approximately 49 new parishioners) confirmed to attend the Breakfast on Sunday This year attendees will be assigned tables. A welcoming Table Captain from Stewardship or Parish Council will be at each table to facilitate an engaging, welcoming conversation. A Ministries Handbook and Photo Directory will be given to each family by the table Captain. Bob Pauley will welcome all, Fr. Dan will lead us in a welcoming breakfast prayer and spokespersons from the various Commissions will be introduced. A plentiful buffet of ham sandwiches, assorted sweets, fresh fruit and beverages will be served. Other business: A suggestion to engage Bob Pauley s Band for a Parish Fundraiser was favorably received with thoughts that January or February would be a great time to schedule it. Concordia will allow LC to post a flyer on their bulletin board. Fr. Dan and MaryElise provided an update from Pastoral Council. Finance (David Kriete & David Hession) No meeting on 10/16. Nothing new on Finance as the results to-date are on budget. The yellow house was demolished and that is moving forward. We have meeting with Fred and Mike Walton on 10/11/18 to discuss the building campaign and then on 10/12/18 to discuss our Annual Report. Page 2 of 9

3 Prayer and Worship (Jim Karolewicz & Jim Kochan) No update at this time. Next meeting is on November 13 th Building Items (Doug Borys, Susan Arensmeier) Meeting scheduled for 10/15/18 Planning is ongoing and revised external and internal design is underway School (Joe Russell & Doug Borys) Shamrock the Wisconsin Club, Country Club location on Good Hope Road. Make sure to save March 16, Donations for the auction are being sought. Fund raising has returned to 2008 level. Deanery Level Items (Doug Borys & Frederick Werkmeister) 1. Reviewed Synod implementation and Amazing Parish conference. 2. Discussed two ongoing items being developed by the Diocese: emergency procedures for active shooters and training for extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist guidelines. 3. The schedule for the 175th anniversary of the diocese was distributed. 4. Saturday, February 2, 2019 is the 2019 Parish Councils Congress. Pastoral and finance councils have been asked to comment on the current norms and submit those comments. 5. Each person gave one thought/question that would be brought to the attention of the Bishop. 6. Next meeting is at Lumen Christi in April Trustee Level Items (Jon VanDrisse & John Clark) Nothing new to report Staff Level (Ken Sosnowski) Reminder- Request that PC Members/Commission Leaders voluntarily staff the desk after/before Masses.
