1 Friday 26 January 2018 Library News L ast week a team of keen readers from Year 7 and 8 travelled to Dunraven School to take part in the Phoenix Book Prize shortlisting event. The Phoenix Book Prize is an author award voted for by students at Lambeth Schools. On Friday, our students and those from three other schools were tasked with whittling down a list of 30 brilliant books to four. It was a fun day. It was really good meeting new people, said Iris and it being up to us to make a decision about the books. We were able to socialise through a passion for books! said Mya. It was fulfilling as a young person to have the authority to choose the final four. Now that we have our shortlist, let the reading commence! Over the next couple of months the Phoenix Book Club will meet regularly to read and discuss our thoughts. Once we ve read all the titles, we ll vote for a winner along with participating schools, and attend the finale event. The Phoenix Book Club is open to students in Year 7 and Year 8. Meetings will take place at lunchtime on Thursday s during Week A. Students who are interested in taking part should see Ms Eagle in the library.

2 Parents and Carers Council Thursday 8 February 7.00pm 8.30pm at The Elmgreen School Parents and Carers Council is a very friendly, informal meeting for all Elmgreen parents and carers. You don t need any experience the only thing you need to be is a parent of an Elmgreen student! There is going to be a free parent workshop focusing on Mindset coaching ( All parents and carers are welcome. Library News An inspiring book landed on the library desk this week. The Female Lead is a non-profit organisation highlighting female achievement across the world in order to offer inspiring role models and practical guidance around life and career. The book, edited by founder Edwina Dunn features the stories of 60 ambitious and successful women, offering a diverse range of personal histories, interests, challenges and goals. Some of the women featured lead their professions; some have broken new ground for women; others have inspired change through relentless endeavour. In the run up to International Women s Day, check back here every week for more information on some of the brilliant women featured in the book. In the meantime, do come up to the library where you can browse the book and read each woman s personal story. 1. Clare Smyth: First female British chef to hold and retain three Michelin stars Clare was born in Northern Ireland and grew up on a farm in County Antrim. The day after she left school at the age of 16 she moved to England to go to catering college in Portsmouth. After working in Australia, America and Monaco, she took up her current post as head chef at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London. She was awarded an MBE in In her own words: Some people thought I d last about a week. They weren t used to a girl coming into the kitchen. I have always had a fear of failure but, at the same time, I think you have to put yourself out there to fail. Whenever I ve gone into a kitchen, I have always wanted to be not just the best person at what I m doing, but the best person they ve ever had doing it.

3 Senior Maths Team Challenge by Louis Jameson ast month, Year 12 students, Louis Jameson, Seamus Mayo, Matthew Day and Alfie Wells took part in a Maths L sixth form competition at Bexhill Sixth Form College, in Hastings. We competed against some very respectable opponents, for many activities. The first involved us all working together to complete 10 questions in 40 minutes, with the second involving a numbers crossword as a pair. The third and final were quick interlinking questions that involved the answers of previous questions. Ultimately, after fighting hard and getting many answers correct as a team, we finished a respectable 8th out of 9 mainly independent school teams. We will field another team next year. Year 9 Immunisations The Teenage Vaccination Consent Forms have been given to Year 9 s for Diptheria/Tetanus/Polio Booster (Td/Ipv) and Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) and to be returned to the school office by Friday 9 February please The Lambeth & Southwark Immunisations Team will be visiting the school on Wednesday 28 February to administer the vaccine All parents and carers! - Come to the Parents' Council on Thursday 8 February 7.00 pm 8.30 pm. 4 PPF SKILLS BUREAU Wednesday 21 March 2018 Did you know where you d end up working when you were at school? No? You weren t the only one. Many students have little idea about the huge range of careers they could follow. As parents and carers we can help by suggesting new directions and guiding students on how to reach their goals The PPF is hosting the Skills Bureau at school on Wednesday 21 March 2018 Parents and carers from all walks of life with a huge range of skills and experience will be talking to small groups of Year 9 students (age 13/14) about their work and the sort of skills needed to succeed. Could you spare a couple of hours to help out? We need people from all areas. You ll be sharing your unique knowledge with lots of students - not just your own child. We are aiming to have 10 parents representing 10 different work sectors at each session. The sessions will run at the following times: (1) am (2) pm (3) pm Of course you re welcome to attend more than one session if you can spare the time!
