2 March 20, 2015 Ethical Issues in Small Communities: Expanding the Definition and Discussion Presented by Janet Schank, PhD Doubletree by Hilton Portland 1000 NE Multnomah Portland, OR Registration 8:30-9:00 am Workshop 9:00 am - 4:00 pm With one hour for lunch (provided) 6 CE hours CE credit level 2 Mental health providers who work within small communities face a number of ethical challenges related to: (1) professional boundaries; (2) limited resources and limits of competence; (3) community expectations and values differences; (4) interagency issues in working with other community agencies, groups, and professionals; (5) peer helpers and other alternatives to traditional treatment methods; (6) lack of privacy for clients and mental health providers; and (7) burnout. While much of the literature has focused on rural and frontier small communities, there are a number of other small communities that offer similar ethical challenges communities of color and ethnic groups, GLBTQ, small colleges, At the completion of this workshop, participants should be able to: Describe common ethical issues in small communities Identify the unique ethical and therapeutic challenges of overlapping relationships between mental health providers and their patients in small communities Identify factors that increase the ethical and therapeutic complications of small-community mental health providers Workshop Description Workshop Objectives chemical dependency, faith based, feminist, military, law enforcement/criminal justice/corrections, suburbs, disability, deafness, and therapists who see other therapists as clients. Yet the challenges and rewards of practicing within these small communities receive little attention in most textbooks and training programs, even though many mental health providers find themselves practicing within one of these small communities. This workshop will offer an in-depth look at the challenges and rewards of small-community mental health practice. Vignettes, film clips, and discussion will help illustrate the issues and the advantages of practicing across a range of small-community settings. Discuss current concerns in smallcommunity ethical practice Utilize models for ethical decision making Analyze strategies to minimize risk in small-community mental health practice Describe the advantages of practicing within a small community Provide recommendations for the future of small-community practice About the Presenter Janet Schank, PhD, is a licensed psychologist, who has practiced for 25 years in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Schank has directed and supervised services in college/university, public school, community mental health, and non-profit settings. She has also taught at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities and the University of St. Thomas-Twin Cities. Dr. Schank is a past chair of the Minnesota Psychological Association Ethics Committee. She has focused much of her consultation, writing, and professional presentations around ethical issues for mental health professionals in a variety of small communities. Dr. Schank co-authored Ethics in Small Communities: Challenges and Rewards for Psychologists, which was published by the American Psychological Association. She has co-authored chapters in two ethics texts and in several journal articles related to ethics in small communities. She is a frequent presenter at professional conferences, both in the Midwest and nationally. Dr. Schank is a native of rural Nebraska. Workshop Outline I. Introduction and Overview II. 3 April 10, 2015 Reducing Stress With Mind/Body Skills Acquisition Presented by Alice Domar, PhD Holiday Inn Portland South SW 95th Avenue Wilsonville, OR Registration 8:30-9:00 am Workshop 9:00 am - 4:00 pm With one hour for lunch (provided) 6 CE hours CE credit level 2 About the Presenter Alice D. Domar, PhD is a pioneer in the field of mind/body medicine. She conducts ongoing ground-breaking research which focuses on the relationship between stress and various medical conditions, as well as the impact of lifestyle habits on mental and physical health. Dr. Domar received her MA and PhD in Health Psychology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Ferkauf School of Professional Psychology of Yeshiva University. Her post-doctoral training was at Beth Israel Hospital, Deaconess Hospital, and Children s Hospital, all in Boston. She is currently the Executive Director of the Domar Center for Mind/ Body Health, and the Director of Mind/ Body Services at Boston IVF. She is an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, and a senior staff psychologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Domar has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments as a best-selling author, media authority and sought-after public speaker. She is the author of numerous books, and is on the advisory board for Parents Magazine, Resolve, and Easy Eats. She has been on the Board of Experts for LLuminari and a columnist for Redbook and Health magazines. She was also a featured expert on the online social health network BeWell.com. Three of her books have been finalists for the Books for a Better Life Award. She was also the Series Editor for a series of mind/body books by Harvard Medical Publications/Simon and Schuster. She is the narrator of the DVD s Stress and Relaxation Explained and Infertility Explained, both of which won silver Telly Awards. Dr. Domar has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, Dateline NBC, CNN, PBS, and the CBS and NBC Evening News, to name a few. She presents lectures and conducts workshops throughout the US and around the world and went on tour with Oprah in the spring of 2004 and 2005 with the LLuminari team. Her newest book is co-authored with Dr. Susan Love, called Live a Little (Three Rivers Press, 2011). Workshop Description The purpose of this workshop is to introduce and reinforce the efficacy of various mind/body skills for the clinician. Research on the clinical efficacy will be presented for each topic. The workshop will be a combination of lecture and experiential exercises, with numerous case presentations throughout. The goal is to not only teach participants how to provide these new skills to their patients/ clients, but also how to use them personally, and to reduce stress. Workshop Outline 1. Physical approaches to stress relief a. Relaxation techniques, including the relaxation response and mini relaxation approaches b. The impact of exercise on distress c. Healthful nutritional approaches to stress 2. Cognitive approaches to stress relief a. Cognitive restructuring b. Social support c. Emotional expression d. Self nurturance e. Perfectionism 3. Q & A Workshop Objectives At the completion of this workshop, participants should be able to: Utilize the research on the efficacy of mind/body skills to treat both physical and psychological symptoms of stress To be able to describe and experience physical approaches to stress relief To analyze and experience cognitive approaches to stress relief To apply how to introduce and teach these techniques to patients/clients OPA is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. 4 June 5, 2015 Treating Complex Trauma in Adolescents and Young Adults Presented by John Briere, PhD Holiday Inn Portland Airport 8439 NE Columbia Boulevard Portland OR Registration 8:30-9:00 am Workshop 9:00 am - 4:00 pm With one hour for lunch (provided) 6 CE hours CE credit level 2 This workshop will present an empirically validated treatment for multi-traumatized, multi-problem adolescents and young adults called the Integrative Treatment of Complex Trauma for Adolescents (ITCT-A), a product of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, SAMHSA. This culturally-sensitive, components approach includes relational, cognitivebehavioral, affect regulation, and mindfulness interventions that are specifically crafted to engage and assist seriously traumatized -- and sometimes alienated young people. Workshop Description It offers a flexible, nonjudgmental, but focused approach to issues such as substance abuse, tension reduction behaviors (e.g., self-mutilation), dysfunctional sexual behavior, and other avoidance responses. Interventions are individually adapted and customized according to the youth s current challenges, culture, specific symptoms, and functional capacities. The importance of empowerment, re-moralization, and compassion for the trauma-affected youth is emphasized throughout. Workshop Objectives At the completion of this workshop, participants should be able to: Describe three major effects of complex trauma on adolescents List three core components of Integrative Treatment of Complex Trauma for Adolescents (ITCT-A) Define trigger identification and intervention Define re-moralization About the Presenter John Briere, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, where he teaches and consults in the burn unit, emergency rooms, and psychiatric inpatient unit. Dr. Briere also serves as Director of the USC Adolescent Trauma Training Center of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. A past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), he is recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Science of Trauma Psychology from the American Psychological Association and the Robert S. Laufer Memorial Award for Scientific Achievement from ISTSS. He is designated as Highly Cited Researcher by the Institute for Scientific Information, and is author or co-author of a number of articles, chapters, encyclopedia entries, books, and psychological tests relevant to trauma. Level 2: psychologically sophisticated content, at either introductory or more advanced levels, aimed at general professional audiences. Level 3: highly advanced theoretical or technical content, aimed at expert audiences. Level 2 and 3 presentations will typically warrant CE credit for a licensed psychologist. Both level and number of hours for each workshop are indicated and official letters of completion will be awarded to participants who attend the entire workshop. APA guidelines specify that no letter of attendance will be awarded for partial workshop attendance. Level 2 and 3 offerings are typically accepted by the Oregon Board of Psychologist Examiners.
