3 SAMPLE SELECTION 1. Definition We define a Patient Advocacy Organization (PAO) as a 501(c)(3) public charity whose primary mission is to combat a particular disease or disability or to work towards improving the health and well-being of a particular population via activities including (but not limited to) providing patient education and services, funding research, and/or engaging in outreach and advocacy. Our study was limited to PAOs operating at the national level in the US. Hence we exclude organizations with a primarily international service area and organizations whose work is limited to a particular region in the US (including regional chapters of national organizations). 2. Search and inclusion criteria To construct our sample, we searched the GuideStar charity using the following criteria: 501(c)(3) public charity National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) codes in groups G (Diseases, Disorders, Medical Disciplines) or H (Medical Research) Annual revenue of at least $7.5 million This query returned 756 results. 3. Exclusion criteria We excluded all non-pao organizations, applying the following exclusion criteria: Medical facilities (e.g., hospitals, clinics) Research institutions (e.g., universities, laboratories) 2
4 Professional societies (e.g., The American College of Radiology) Non-operating and private foundations Single entity support organizations (i.e., organizations that accept charitable contributions for a single entity such as a hospital or university) Defunct organizations Regional organizations Internationally focused organizations Non-sufficiently health-related organizations 4.
