My name is JoAnn, and I want to tell you a story about love and life. Gene and I met back in high school and remained dear friends until we married years later. Both of us have lived in Western Tidewater for most of our lives and we enjoy the community that Suffolk neighbors have created. Me as a young nurse, 1962 Our lives have always been connected to the water surrounding our region. Boating, fishing Gene 1968 and spending time on the Outer Banks played a significant role in our daily lives and in the composition of who we are. 3
So, it seemed quite normal that one day in December 1993 after a day of fishing for striper, Gene felt a little soreness in his shoulder. Throughout that evening the pain became sharper and stronger. Our primary care physician saw Gene the very next morning and was concerned that the pain had not subsided. After an EKG, he The big one that didn't get away directed us to go directly to the emergency room at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. 4
Meeting us there, Dr. Carl Hartman, cardiologist, began his exam. It was then that Gene s heart just stopped working. I saw the doctors running around and felt in my heart of hearts that something was completely wrong. Little did I know that Dr. Hartman was the only thing between Gene and death. Being a nurse by training, I understood when I heard the doctors say STEMI and 99% blocked. Only then did I realize that Gene might not make it. 5
I felt scared. I felt alone. I saw my life with Gene starting to dissolve before my eyes, imagining the small moments of my day without him. A whirlwind of lasts began to cascade in my mind: the last seashell we found together, the last cast for surf fishing, the last sound of the wave crashing into the sand. Carl Hartman came to me and said that Gene was heading into emergency surgery and he had been stabilized for the moment but was in grave condition. I prayed. What else could I do? What more could anyone else do? It was the longest eight hours of my life that followed. I couldn t catch my breath, and the tears wouldn t stop. 6 That day seems like yesterday
When Carl came back out, he had a small smile on his face that told me everything I needed to know. A close call was averted, and Gene would survive, for now. It took weeks of recovery, but Gene made it back to health. We don t know how long we have to enjoy our time together. I didn t expect to be living the rest of my life without Gene, we had been together for so long. But no one ever knows I now understand that having the Sentara Heart program and expert doctors like Carl is something that can t be undervalued. When it s your husband or mother or father, Sentara Heart is the only link to keeping your family together. Gene s guardian angel, Dr. Carl Hartman 7
So I give to support the Sentara Heart program. I give so that others get a second chance at a life together. I give because I know the value of keeping our Heart Hospital at the forefront of innovation and success. I give because I now understand what it means to be married in sickness and in health. ~ JoAnn Gene & Me, Together Forever 8
These are JoAnn s words. Straight from her heart. And we hope that her words, her story, and these photos touch your heart. We are sharing Gene and JoAnn s story with you because you make stories like this possible. Every single day. Thank you for your vital and vibrant support of Sentara. Your gifts provide critical, urgent care to neighbors, friends and loved ones. Your gifts fund innovations in treatments, diagnosis, and wellness programs. But most important of all, your gifts keep families together and loved ones close. We truly cherish all of your support of Sentara hospitals and programs.
