People with MS should consult their physicians about using one of the FDA-approved medications and other effective treatments for the symptoms of MS. The cure unknown. This is why we care. While many would have felt it enough to lend the occasional hand to a friend going through a rough time, Jacquelyn went steps further and became an advocate for multiple sclerosis. Jacquelyn Mitchard Featured Speaker, Jacquelyn Mitchard to kick off the event To Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of the number one New York Times bestselling novel, Deep End of the Ocean, multiple sclerosis is a personal issue. She was introduced to the debilitating effects of MS when her best friend from childhood was diagnosed with the disease. While many would have felt it enough to lend the occasional hand to a friend going through a rough time, Jacquelyn went steps further and became an advocate for multiple sclerosis. She now speaks throughout the US to raise awareness for MS and to dispel misconceptions about the disease. Active with the National MS Society for many years, Jacquelyn has appeared at various events around the country. Along with her speaking at MS events, Mitchard has also been inspired to base a character in her recent book on her friend. The book, The Breakdown Lane (HarperCollins Publishers, April 2005), explores the challenges that can arise when MS is introduced into a family.

11 2006 Sponsorship Guide What is MS? This chronic, unpredictable and often disabling disease attacks the brain and spinal cord. Approximately 400,000 Americans have MS, which strikes people between the ages of years of age. Symptoms may range from tingling and numbness to blindness and paralysis. MS is devastating because it is so unpredictable people with MS never know when an attack will occur, how long it will last, or how much of their abilities will return when it is over. The Women Against MS Luncheon 300 primarily business women and community members gather with a common goal: to raise needed dollars for programs and research for people with MS. With your help, we hope to raise $75,000 at this year s Luncheon. There are 10,500 people most of them women with multiple sclerosis living in the communities of the Northern California Chapter. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Northern California Chapter started the Luncheon in 2005 as a way for women to increase awareness and to take the lead in ending the devastating effects of MS. How is the money used? Sixty-six percent of every dollar raised stays in Northern California to provide programs and services, such as support groups and peer counseling for Northern California families living with MS. Thirty-four percent contributes to nationwide research such as: Gender research studies to determine why 73 percent of those with MS are women. Research for nervous system repair which could help those already disabled by MS have a chance for restored function maybe even to walk again. Programs and services such as educational seminars, medical equipment loans, family counseling and exercise classes for Northern California families fighting MS. Is the WAMS Luncheon tax-deductible? As a sponsor of the WAMS Luncheon, a portion of your cost is tax-deductible. You may deduct the dollar amount of your contributions that exceeds the Fair Market Value of the benefit you receive from the Luncheon (i.e. cost of the lunches for you and your guests). You will receive a letter with the amount you may deduct. What is the Northern California Chapter s tax identification number? How many people may I invite as a sponsor?
