1 Building a fundraising strategy Step one: Think about what, specifically, you are trying to achieve. What outcomes are you looking for? Tip: think about what needs you are addressing, and for whom. Step two: What is your current position? What are your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats? Tip: think about past fundraising experiences; resources available; resources needed. Step three: What options do you have which might help you achieve your objectives and outcomes? Tip: Having a thinking session with other people to capture anything they can think of, and then weight up the pros and cons of each option - share ideas on possible sources of income, methods to meet your fundraising targets, what resources you will need. Step four: Draw up your plan. Tip: Remember to include what steps and actions you are going to need to take and when; who will be involved; how you will keep each other updated; how you will review your progress; how you will all keep motivated; and how you will keep other F/friends updated.

2 Example fundraising strategy Name of meeting: Laputa Quaker Meeting Date: 12 Octember 2006 Name of meeting: Janet H (tel ) What are you fundraising for? Desired outcomes: To raise at least 2,000 for Quaker work in Outer Brobdingnag To raise awareness in our meeting of Quaker work To raise awareness in the local community of Quaker work and of our Meeting A review of your current position Strengths which might help you fundraise Several people have already shown an interest in this project We have a number of good event ideas already. Weaknesses which might make it harder to succeed The meeting house is being renovated and we may need to find alternative venues for events Opportunities for good fundraising Our meeting website is up to date and lots of f/friends use it - this could be a useful tool Barbara X works at Radio Laputa and can get us onto local news Threats to a successful outcome People may be unwilling to attend events if they are too similar to our last appeal Not many people listen to Radio Laputa! Your options Option + - Garden party Can be held even during MH renovation Dependent on the weather Musical evening hosted at Balnibarbi Baptist Church Shared lunch Getting the children s meeting involved Young people to organise quiz night for adults Sponsored event/s Communicating about the appeal Big venue; involvement of other churches; MH renovations not a problem Easy to organise and do; can invite other members of community and hold at Laura s house; good opportunity to raise local awareness of Quaker work Raise awareness of Quaker work; people more likely to buy anything made by the children More interesting for young people - avoids adults competing against children/yp Individuals can choose their own event/ challenge; anybody/any age can take part Posters: People using the MH will see/may want to get involved Keep up MH profile during renovations Radio: Wider publicity Will we be charged for use? Restricted numbers - up to 50 (Solution: could run two shared lunches) Children might not be interested! Adults might not know answers to the questions! (Solution: watch Big Brother/ EastEnders for a few weeks beforehand!) Collecting the money (Solution: use Justgiving.com) Producing good quality posters Who will speak? What will they say? (Solution: Contact QCD at Friends House for advice/support)

3 Overall fundraising plan: Our fundraising drive will start on 1 Marchuary and finish on 31 Augober. Janet H, Bob Q, and Margaret Z will be our chief fundraisers. Laura V is the treasurer and will take donations. Malcolm T is the warden and will open the Meeting House for events which take place there. We will announce the appeal at Meeting on 15th Marchuary and post details on the website the same day. We will ask people to sign up for updates on events. We will ask the Children s Group to design posters to display outside the Meeting House and ask them to have these ready by 1 Marchuary. We will also invite them to plan and write questions for a Quiz Night on 17th Jularch. Maurice Q to introduce and oversee. Barbara X will contact Friends House for advice on approaching media (contact: Anne van Staveren, ), and then Radio Laputa ( ) about getting our project onto the local news by 25th Mar. We will our supporters on the 5th of each month with a list of activities for the month and a running total of how much we have raised. We will hold a presentation about the work in Outer Brobdingnag after Meeting on 15 Marchuary; a cream tea on Thurs 21st; a ceilidh on Saturday 29th; a quiz night on Wednesday 12th; and a bring-and-share lunch after meeting on 31st Augober. We will have review meetings once a month, to discuss: Progress to date; Achievements; Next steps. On 25 Augober, six days before the end of the appeal, we will hold a review meeting to look at our successes and think about follow-up and celebration ideas.
