We do not accept blanket permissions from your son or daughter but ask that for each visit they give permission for us to talk to one another.
Staff HEALTH SERVICES Sharon Yardley, Director of Health Services Polly McCabe, Associate Director of Health Services Amelia Fournier, Nurse Practitioner Katherine Teixeira-DaSilva, Nurse Practitioner Erika Redmond, Triage Nurse Kourtney Edwards, Administrative Assistant Elisabeth Brewer, Supervising Physician
BABSON COUNSELING SERVICES
IMPEDIMENTS TO STUDENT SUCCESS 1. Stress - primary impediment to success 2. Severe, crisis-oriented problems 3. Increase in sleep deprivation, decrease in sleep quality 4. Challenges in navigating the social world of college
BABSON COUNSELING SERVICES Students are offered 8 pre-paid counseling sessions per academic year. For those that would benefit from a consultation with a psychiatrist, Babson offers 5 pre-paid psychiatric visits. Primarily for medication evaluations and follow-ups Babson provides two full-time clinicians on campus for consultation, outreach and crisis management.
BABSON COUNSELING SERVICES Confidential Except when risk of harm to self or others is present Safe space to talk about anything Developmental model (growth oriented)
PRIMARY PRESENTING CONCERNS Anxiety and Stress Depression Relationship Concerns
HUMAN RELATIONS SERVICE Babson contracts with a community mental health agency, Human Relations Service, or HRS to provide counseling services. HRS employs 30 clinicians and 2 psychiatrists with a wide variety of expertise and significant experience working with Babson students.
HUMAN RELATIONS SERVICE Located just minutes from campus If students do not have transportation, our Public Safety Community Service Officers transport them at no cost Some of the clinicians come to campus and meet with students at the Wellness Center
USE OF SERVICES Some students come to Babson with a history of mental health concerns Others find adjusting to college more challenging than they anticipate Some will struggle immediately when they arrive Others will experience a honeymoon period and begin to struggle more mid-way through the semester.
USE OF SERVICES Approximately 10% of our students seek counseling services each year. Student comment on Survey regarding their counseling experience: I was skeptical coming into the process, but this experience completely changed my views on counseling and its effectiveness. It was a great experience that helped me get through some tough times...
USE OF SERVICES College counseling can look very different from what we traditionally might think of as clinical mental health services. Students looking for a confidential space to talk about something that is concerning them Students using our services do not usually have a psychiatric diagnosis
USE OF SERVICES Student comment on Survey regarding their counseling experience: My experience literally changed my life. Before I was drowning and was on the edge of a mental breakdown. While I'm not completely stable I am at my best. I've been working through a lot of issues that I buried deep in attempt to avoid dealing with past hurt that bubbled below the surface.both my therapist and psychiatrist made me realize that it's ok to have problems and that I'm not alone
ROLE OF PARENTS How can you help your student? Understand that much change and growth will be occurring during these years. As with any stage, it is rare to get through it without bumps in the road. Encourage your student to get help and support when necessary during the bumpy patches.
ROLE OF PARENTS How can you help your student? Get involved only when your son or daughter is not able or willing to seek additional support on their own Support can take many forms counseling is just one option. If you aren t sure if your child needs your assistance, feel free to call me and I am happy to consult with you about what you are hearing/observing. Helicopter parenting can be a deterrent unless your child is actually drowning; then it is appropriate and required.
