Why? Because four out of ten people in our community are living with HIV. Young people are ambivalent about their health, education and future opportunities. Faced with these challenges, we have to be innovative and continually push the boundaries in order to engage youth. WhizzKids United s primary focus this year has been to really try and help empower youth. Young people who have hopes and aspirations for the future are less likely to contract HIV or have unwanted pregnancies, drop out of school etc. To this end, we have held Career Days, developed a Library and expanded our IT and homework club at our Health Academy. WKU has also collaborated with Rheinflanke, Germany, BUSA, Zambia and Dunk, Ghana to create an innovative young leaders programme. Our Game Changers programme received the MEC s Annual Service Excellence Award in the category, Innovation and Best practice. On a personal level, I was honoured and humbled to receive an Honorary Fellowship from Cardiff University for my work in Africa. Going forwards, we ll continue to draw more youth into our health services by empowering them to be agents of change in the community and through the creation of Youth Advisory Boards. The change we seek will come from within, the very youth we seek to serve. Please keep up your support, the journey is really just beginning. 3 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES WhizzKids United offers the most comprehensive approach to youth friendly sexual and reproductive health services in the world. FAMILY PLANNING: Family planning services have increased from 858 visits during 2013 to 1606 visits during 2015 as a result of increased school visits by WKU Counsellors and our WKU girls empowerment programmes. OVC: WKU orphans and vulnerable children are supported through our tailored interventions which include home visits, daily feeding scheme, school uniforms, support securing birth certificates and social welfare grants, educational support and health services. AFTER SCHOOL EDUCATION: These programmes are delivered daily in the afternoons and include Homework Club, Book Club, Chess Club and Arts & Crafts Club. 2015, saw a 47% increase in number of classes delivered. These educational activities attract many young people between 11 and 16 years old, enabling us to teach them life skills from an early age and introduce them to clinic services including our three monthly sexual health risk assessment and HIV testing. EMPOWERMENT THROUGH FOOTBALL: Male and female football teams as well as a Mixed Gender League which helps develop young girls and boys self-esteem, self-confidence and selfefficacy promoting an equal voice in their communities. These leagues successfully promote three monthly health check-ups, male medical circumcision for boys and family planning for girls. GAME CHANGERS: The Game Changers programme was launched in 2014 to help unemployed youth in the community. Game Changers, a year-long programme which promotes personal and professional development, functional skills and a two months internship with local companies helping youth prepare for employment or further education and training. 4 The Ghana Health Academy was completed in ,975 Condom Distribution 935 SRH Services TM GHANA HEALTH ACADEMY The good news is that the WKU Carlos Guerra Academy in Ghana is now complete. This has to be one of Africaid s finest achievements. All monies raised came through friends & family on facebook as well as generous support from Meal A Day, Winter in Venice and the Guerra family. We aren t yet there though. Africaid is busy trying to raise the 12,000 needed for fixtures and fittings so that we can really start working. The Carlos Guerra Academy will focus on providing empowerment and learning opportunities for young people in the region. It will also focus on developing sustainable methods to operate. If we can get the model right, then this will be a huge step for NGOs working in developing countries. Thank you to everyone in Jisonayilli for helping make this a reality. I can t believe we were actually fitting windows on Christmas Day! The adjoining youth clinic built by Africaid in 2003 and run in partnership with PPAG and the DOH are pleased to announce these 2015 results. 6 2015 HIGHLIGHTS SCHOOL SHUTTLE SERVICE - In 2015 we began a new initiative in partnership with the schools of the Edendale community. This partnership has allowed us to access students who are unable to visit our Health Academy due to transport issues. This programme allows students to visit our facilities for the first time, meet our staff and volunteers and access vital health services. In the 2015 reporting period we conducted 26 school shuttle services and due to high demand and interest from the schools we foresee this number increasing significantly in CHARLIZE THERON VISIT - On the 27 August 2015, we were delighted to host a WhizzKids United event for Charlize Theron and the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project, team. The event consisted of a interactive round-robin programme that allowed visitors to experience our different programmes and to gain a better understanding from the youth who participate in WhizzKids United programmes. GAME CHANGERS - The second year of our Game Changer programme proved to be a great success with all participants who completed the programme successfully finding employment! One of our Game Changer topics is event management which allows the participants to get involved within the workings of our organisation. As a result they organised and ran a number of successful events throughout the year, including, the Gogos tea party, Women s day, friends & family event and career day.
