Volunteer Handbook Message from BC & Yukon Branch Welcome to the BC & Yukon Branch of The Kidney Foundation of Canada. I would like to thank you for joining our volunteer team; we are thrilled to have you on board! We are immensely proud of the more than 7,000 volunteers across BC & Yukon who are the backbone of our organization. Without the dedication, time, effort and expertise that our volunteers give, we simply could not accomplish the mission of The Kidney Foundation, to improve the lives of people living with kidney disease in BC & Yukon. Thank you for the time, the effort and the passion you bring to volunteering. In return we will do our very best to provide you with a fulfilling, engaging and enjoyable volunteer experience with the BC & Yukon Branch. With our sincere appreciation Barbara J. Valentine Volunteer, Chapter and Member Engagement BC & Yukon Branch 4
BC & Yukon Branch Who We Are: Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles Our Vision Improved lives for all people affected by Kidney Disease Our Mission The Kidney Foundation of Canada is a national volunteer organization committed to reducing the burden of kidney disease through: Research Funding Providing education and support Providing access to quality healthcare, and Increasing public awareness and commitment to advancing kidney health and organ donation Guiding principles In The Kidney Foundation, philosophical orientation is important and is emphasized in all our activities. As a leading national health charity, our foundation is committed to: Research Excellence Maximizing kidney transplantation Prevention, early detection and comprehensive care Facilitating community involvement Volunteer and staff partnerships, and Transparent, ethical and responsible stewardship 5
Volunteer Handbook History In the 1960s, people with kidney failure had little hope of survival. Dialysis was considered an extraordinary treatment and restricted to very few. Transplantation was still experimental. It was during this time that a young Montreal architect, Morty Tarder, died from kidney disease. Confronted with their son s death, the Tarder family vowed to start an organization that would raise money for research into this poorly understood disease. In 1964, The Kidney Disease Foundation of Canada, as it was known then, was created in Montreal. In 2014, The Kidney Foundation of Canada celebrated 50 years of helping Canadians living with kidney disease. Today, The Kidney Foundation of Canada is the national health charity committed to kidney health and to improved lives for all people living with kidney disease and their families. Our vision for the future is an enduring legacy of those dedicated volunteers who, 50 years ago, started out with a compelling cause and the resolve to make a difference. 6
BC & Yukon Branch The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC & Yukon Branch In 1971 a small group of citizens concerned about kidney disease formed The BC Kidney Association. Sergeant Ken Smith of the Vancouver City Police was its Founding President. Later that year, the Association joined The Kidney Foundation of Canada and became the BC Branch. In 1974, the Branch opened its first office and hired an Executive Director, Ann Munroe. During our first 40 years, 19 volunteer Branch Presidents have offered their individual leadership talents, which have enabled the Branch to grow into the vital, energetic and life-changing organization it is today. The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC & Yukon Branch exists to help prevent kidney disease or delay the onset. We also provide support services for patients who have chronic kidney disease, are on dialysis and promote organ donation to increase kidney transplant rates. We are here to help each and every kidney patient until there is a cure. 7
Volunteer Handbook BC & Yukon Branch Board of Directors and Executive for 2015/2016 Anne Schultz, President Ron Walker, Past President Teresa Atkinson, Vice-President Dennis McCann, Vice President Rick Leong, Treasurer Paul Duperron, Secretary BC & Yukon Chapters and Regional Network Chapters and community groups across BC & Yukon are where members join together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of kidney patients and their families. Our members also help us raise public awareness of the seriousness of kidney disease, and encourage people to keep their kidneys healthy. Our Chapters engage in a number of patient service activities, such as the provision of patient comfort items at their community's dialysis facilities. Chapters play a pivotal role in promoting social connections amongst people who are affected by kidney disease. Traditionally these activities include summer BBQs and holiday parties, but have grown to include informal peer support groups and education. Chapters are the heart and soul of the BC & Yukon Branch and are involved in all of our fundraising and public awareness raising activities. The volunteer commitment of people in the Chapters is critical to The Kidney Foundation. Planning and organizing major fund-raising programs such as the March Drive campaign rests with the Branch office. However the energy needed to execute such initiatives comes from the amazing volunteer pool that is generated by Chapter activities. 8
BC & Yukon Branch There are currently 12 Chapters & Clubs in BC & Yukon and a Regional network in the Interior: Chinese Renal Association (CRA) Eagle Ridge Kamloops MSA Upper Fraser Valley Nanaimo & District Prince George Quesnel South Asian South Okanagan Terrace Vancouver Kidney Club (VKC) Victoria Regional What is Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)? Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is defined as the presence of kidney damage, or a decreased level of kidney function, for a period of three months or more. CKD can be divided into five stages, depending on how severe the damage is to the kidneys, or the level of decreased in kidney function. Usually, kidney disease starts slowly and silently, and progresses over a number of years. Stage 5 is also called end-stage renal disease. It is important to remember that end-stage refers to the end of your kidney function (kidneys working at less than 15% of normal), not the end of life. To sustain life at this stage, dialysis or kidney transplantation is needed. Dialysis and kidney transplantation are known as renal replacement therapies (RRT) because they attempt to replace the normal functioning of the kidneys. 9
Volunteer Handbook What causes Chronic Kidney Disease? There are many different kinds of kidney disease and disorders. Some kidney diseases are inherited and others develop as we grow older. Some ethnic groups such as African, Asian and South Asians are at greater risk of kidney disease. Kidney disease is also associated with other medical conditions including diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. At the present time, the exact cause of many types of kidney disease is not well understood. Most diseases of the kidney attack the filtering units of the kidney, damaging their ability to remove wastes and excess fluids. Currently, there is no cure, but it may be possible to prevent CKD or delay its progression. This is especially true in people with diabetes and high blood pressure, the leading causes of kidney disease. Why You Should Care One in 10 British Columbians is affected by kidney disease. The number diagnosed has increased 60% in the last 10 years. Today, more than 3,000 British Columbians are on dialysis. Dialysis often requires 3 visits each week to a clinic for at least 3 hours of medical therapy. There is no cure. And dialysis is expensive. It costs $70,000 annually for one dialysis patient. A kidney transplant costs $25,000 for surgery and may require up to $6,000 a year for medication post-transplant. A kidney transplant is the best option for most patients to resume a reasonable quality of life and ability to contribute to their family and community. And it is cost-effective for our health care system. 10
BC & Yukon Branch How We Help Information and Referral While Foundation volunteers and staff cannot give direct medical advice, they can provide valuable information n kidney disease and its treatment, as well as referrals to appropriate community agencies and resources. The Information and Referral service is intended to guide people through the sometimes confusing and stressful process of adjusting to living with kidney disease. If you have a question related to kidney disease and its treatment, contact the BC & Yukon Branch office of The Kidney Foundation of Canada at Educational Material The Kidney Foundation provides educational material to people with kidney disease, hospital dialysis units and the general public. The comprehensive Living with Kidney Disease manual is a valuable source of information on how kidneys work, different types of kidney disease, treatment options, eating for health and more. It is published in English, French, Italian, Chinese and Punjabi. These materials are provided free of charge to any Canadian living with kidney disease and can be obtained from your local renal unit. The Foundation also produces a series of educational brochures and fact sheets. Any of these brochures may be ordered through the BC & Yukon Branch and mailed to you for free. A complete listing is available on the Foundation s web site at Short-term Financial Assistance Short-term and emergency financial assistance may be available to cover medical-related expenses associated with kidney disease and its treatment. This assistance is provided only when all other sources of funding have been exhausted. To find out if you are eligible, speak to your renal social worker at the unit or hospital where you are receiving treatment. 11
Volunteer Handbook Kidney suites The "Kidney Suites" is a unique program offered by the BC & Yukon Branch. Developed through a partnership with the New Chelsea Society and BC Housing, five suites are available to renal patients from outside the Lower Mainland who are recuperating from a kidney transplant. The Kidney Foundation also offers a three-bedroom townhouse for families who have to relocate to Vancouver when their child needs to receive hemodialysis at the Children s Hospital. Families may stay in this furnished townhouse until the child receives and recovers from a kidney transplant. BC Camp for Kidney Kids The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC & Yukon Branch, offers kids affected by kidney disease the chance to experience a summer adventure while attending to their individual safety and medical well-being. This event grows every year. For one week in August, children referred by BC's Children's Hospital enjoy camp with their peers. Waterskiing, crafts, paddling, ropes course, swimming, archery, hiking and great food are all part of the week-long adventure for these kids with special medical needs. New friendships are forged and great fun is had by all. The Kidney Foundation pays all camping fees as well as travel costs for children each summer 12
BC & Yukon Branch Living Organ Donor Expense Reimbursement Program Our LODERP Program will reimburse living donors for expenses related to their donation of kidney including airfare, hotel, parking and loss of income. Targeted Screening We believe that the sooner someone knows they have kidney issues, the better able they are to manage their condition. We target those populations who fall into a risk category for kidney disease and go into their community to test their kidney function level Peer Support The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC & Yukon Branch has a peer support program called Kidney Connect. This program provides an opportunity for people affected by kidney disease to talk to others who have been there too. The program is staffed by a team of volunteers who have been especially trained as mentors for people with kidney disease and their families and friends. Volunteers provide support by telephone. Promoters of Organ Donation (POD) The POD Speaker s Program delivers Organ Donation Awareness presentations to community groups such as service clubs, schools and colleges, businesses, and sports teams in many parts of British Columbia. Designed to increase public awareness of the need for kidneys and other organs for transplantation, the presentations give audiences an opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the shortage of organs, and register to become an organ donor. (In British Columbia it is necessary to register with BC Transplant to become an organ donor. The yellow sticker on drivers licenses no longer exists). 13
Volunteer Handbook How We Pay For It All Kidney Car The Kidney Car Program is the longest running charitable car donation program in Canada. By donating your unwanted vehicle you are supporting the 1 in 10 Canadians that have kidney disease while demonstrating good environmental stewardship. Your unwanted vehicle donation is turned into much needed funds to provide screening for kidney diseases, medical research, support for critical programs and services, as well as information and education on kidney disease and the importance of organ donation. Kidney Metals Help support The Foundation by recycling your scrap metal in return for a charitable tax receipt. Don t discard your excess or waste metal materials. Recycle and support our critical programs and services that help the 1 in 10 Canadians with kidney disease. Steel, Iron, aluminum, copper, stainless steel, nickel, brass, tin, titanium and other metals are all accepted. If your business is involved with manufacturing processes, auto parts, demolition, construction or appliances get involved while demonstrating your environmental stewardship. March Drive The Kidney Foundation of Canada's Door-to-Door Campaign is our largest annual fundraising event. It's a time when thousands of volunteers not only across BC & Yukon but across Canada come together to make a difference by knocking on doors in their local communities to ask their neighbors for donations 14
BC & Yukon Branch Kidney Walk The Kidney Walk began with a small group of people and with the support of our long time sponsor the Sons of Scotland the walk took place at Trout Lake in Vancouver in 2008, raising just under $10,000. In 2008, with seven Kidney Foundation Volunteer Chapters the Walks grew into a provincial wide campaign. Today, the Kidney Walk is held in over 25 communities each year across BC, raising more then $1.4 millions with over 12,000 participants and volunteers! 2015 Vancouver Kidney Walk at Athlete s Village Plaza, False Creek 15
