1 Strathclyders honoured in 2017 medals ceremony Eleven individual staff members and four teams presented with awards for outstanding service

2 2 Strathclyders honoured in 2017 medals ceremony Eleven individual staff members and four teams at Strathclyde have had their outstanding service recognised by becoming recipients of University medals. The awards have been made to people and teams, nominated by their peers and colleagues, for their important contribution to the University Values in their work, relationships and achievements. Our values People-Oriented Bold Innovative Collaborative Ambitious These values were developed by the Strathclyde community following extensive consultation and feedback including a University wide survey and focus groups. It was then determined to recognise people who most exemplified the values by awarding them a Strathclyde Medal. Following a nominations process during April and May 2017, the winners were selected by a committee of representatives from around the University. The 2017 awards were presented by Principal Professor Sir Jim McDonald at a ceremony at The Technology and Innovation Centre on Friday 8th September. The event was attended by winners, guests, nominators and University leaders. Sir Jim said: This ceremony marks the next step in a journey we have been on for about 4 years when we initially started to explore the values of Strathclyde, and represents the momentum that we have built around capturing what it is to be staff who embody our values. It also presents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of colleagues who are individual medal and team trophy winners, and acknowledge those who nominated them. It is clear from both the high calibre and the number of nominations received, 90 individuals and 33 teams, that we are a thriving and successful University. Every medal recipient stood out from amongst the nominations as exemplars of the Strathclyde Values, not only on one or two occasions but in their everyday interactions, relationships and on-going commitment to excellence in the roles they do. It is also important to acknowledge that being nominated by colleagues as an exemplar of the Strathclyde Values, is in itself a great honour. Strathclyders honoured in 2017 medals ceremony

3 3 At the ceremony on 8th September 2017 a total of 15 medals were awarded to individuals and teams. The medal recipients were: Individuals: Aimee White, Strategy and Policy Carol Georges, NAOME Christine Sinclair, Human Resources Directorate Colin Flynn, Disability Service Hugh Gallagher, School of Education Jim MacDonald, Security Services Jean Dearie, Estates Services Lynn Curran, Forensic Science Mary Bennett, Principal s Suite Shirley Darling, HaSS Wes Boulstridge, Safety, Health and Wellbeing Teams: HaSS Course Support Team Cleaning BICS Team Centre for Lifelong Learning Operations Team CELCIS Consultancy Team

4 4 INDIVIDUAL MEDAL RECIPIENTS Aimee White Modern Apprentice, Strategy and Policy (1 years service) nominated by Darren Thomson. Carol Georges Administrator, Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering (26 years service) received 9 nominations from colleagues and students Although only having recently been appointed models the values in her work and relationships with colleagues and customers Thoughtful additional support for colleagues shows excellent initiative Shows leadership and influencing wider group of apprentices Highly committed to completing her apprenticeship and developing a professional career The go to person highly people oriented in helping new staff settle in and welcoming them into the Strathclyde community Focused on excellence and improvement and is always exploring ways of doing things better even after 26 years a true innovative spirit Is a wonderful mentor to others Strathclyders honoured in 2017 medals ceremony

5 5 Individual medal recipients Christine Sinclair Assistant HR Adviser/PA, Human Resources (12 years service) nominated by Jan Lee and senior HR team colleagues Colin Flynn Disability Adviser, Disability Service (18 years service) nominated by Anne Duncan and Jan Duke Well known by almost everyone for her upbeat, down to earth and friendly attitude Nothing is too much trouble has been pivotal in helping new professors to Strathclyde and the UK with things like Schools, Nurseries and other information to help them settle in Always highly professional; she makes multi-tasking look easy Shows exceptional commitment to student support and promotion of mental health and wellbeing Has driven the agenda for mindfulness for staff and students has trained several staff as volunteers and manages the provision of lunchtime sessions Is very innovative in his approach to mental health support, targeting a wider audience and hard to reach students

6 6 Individual medal recipients Hugh Gallagher Lecturer, School of Education (13 years service) nominated by Michelle Oates, Linda Harris and Morag Findlay. Hugh is now retired from the University. Jim MacDonald Security Warden (12 years service) nominated by Louise McColl and Catherine Cairney Led the restructuring of the PGDE course of 950 students His teaching and leadership was inspirational to others Much of his success stems from his nothing is too much trouble attitude and his wonderful sense of humour An outstanding teacher and champion of the University Nominated for People Oriented, Collaborative and Innovative Well known for his approachable and likeable attitude Highly conscientious Goes out of his way to be helpful and courteous to others Volunteers on Project Search supporting young people and makes a very positive impact on their experience at Strathclyde Strathclyders honoured in 2017 medals ceremony

7 7 Individual medal recipients Jean Dearie PA to Director of Estates Services (37 years service), nominated by Stella Matko and Shona Miller. Lynn Curran Technician, Centre for Forensic Science (35 years service) nominated by Penny Haddrill Jean was unable to attend the ceremony and her award was collected on her behalf by Stella Matko Long serving member of staff Known as the lynch-pin of Estates and knows almost everyone personally Has been with University for 37 years and in that time has consistently delivered an excellent service to colleagues and others A strong advocate of positive change and driving excellence Is the go to person to resolve problems, get information and advice Is extremely supportive of students and enhancing their experience Provides outstanding support to colleagues and is making a real and positive contribution to achieving the ambitious targets they are all working towards Central to the development of the major crime scene exercise which runs over two weeks every year

8 8 Individual medal recipients Mary Bennett Executive Assistant to the Principal (34 years service) nominated by Jan Lee Shirley Darling Senior Adviser of Study, HaSS (15 years service) nominated by Tony Anderson Known for her swan like qualities makes complex organisational problem solving look easy Is always upbeat and friendly and despite being extraordinarily busy always has time to talk to colleagues Is a kind and considerate colleague and is a great mentor to colleagues Demonstrates a real commitment to her own development and the development of others is keen to enhance her skills and experience and is a real example of the people oriented and collaborative values of Strathclyde Known for her dedication and the pivotal role she plays in the faculty office team Is widely respected not only for the work she does but the way she engages and her supportive attitude to the students Instrumental in making positive changes to the processes and systems to improve the staff and student experience in HASS Strathclyders honoured in 2017 medals ceremony

9 9 Individual medal recipients Wes Boulstridge Fire Safety Adviser (3 years service) nominated by Rachel Doyle Nominated for People Oriented, Collaborative, Bold and Ambitious Works tirelessly to ensure the Fire Safety processes and procedures are in place and working effectively Has been instrumental in reducing the amount of fire alerts resulting in very positive feedback from the Fire and Rescue Service Builds good working relationships with people and provides help and support in an engaging way A friendly and supportive colleague who volunteers his skills and knowledge to keep the workplace a safe place for all
