2 2 The Grampian Health Improvement Training Programme

3 The Grampian Health Improvement Training Programme Foreword All kinds of volunteer and paid workers play a vital role in influencing the health and wellbeing of the people they work with in Grampian. This includes preventing new health problems (in their widest sense) from occurring and preventing existing health problems from worsening. Despite its importance this role often goes unacknowledged and staff can be expected to intuitively know what to do and what to say simply by virtue of their position. Yet health communication and health behaviour change can be a complex and demanding task, requiring a breadth of knowledge and a suite of skills to accomplish. The training available through this brochure is therefore an essential resource for the preparation and ongoing development of volunteers and paid workers across sectors and organisations in Grampian. As Head of Health Improvement for NHS Grampian I want to acknowledge the skills, experience and dedication of the training professionals behind it and I endorse its content to the widest audience possible. Chris Littlejohn NHS Grampian Head of Health Improvement

4 4 The Grampian Health Improvement Training Programme Welcome Welcome to our first Grampian Health Improvement Training Programme! This has been designed to bring together the diverse range of health improvement training happening across Grampian in one, easily accessible place. The organised learning opportunities in this programme cover many different areas, subjects and individuals but share a key aim: to provide workers and volunteers with the knowledge, confidence and skills to enable people living in Grampian to make better informed choices to improve their health. This is because those of us who work face-to-face with the public have huge potential to help people take significant steps towards managing their own health and wellbeing. Whether we work with individuals, families or whole neighbourhoods; whether in a health care setting, in the community or at home, our health improvement knowledge and skills can really make a difference to people s lives. For those in our region who struggle to read or act on written information our conversations may be the best source of help and support they have. Being equipped with the skills and confidence to take the right action within our areas of work could go a long way in reducing the inequalities in health and wellbeing that still exist in our region. In this brochure you will find that training courses are grouped under their main behavioural topic, for example smoking, sexual health and wellbeing or healthy eating. The core skills for health improvement section covers areas not specific to any one topic but can act as a helpful grounding with principles and skills to apply to all other areas. Many of our courses are free to all, some courses may include a cost to some or all organisations, so please feel free to ask the contact person for that course. Several trainers also offer bespoke courses to fit your specific team s needs where indicated in the brochure. You will receive a certificate on completion of some courses, and some courses are accredited with an educational organisation. For NHS staff, courses count towards CPD requirements and many will appear on users e-ksf portfolios. The development of this brochure coincides with the inauguration of a Grampian Health Improvement Training Network. This aims to bring together health improvement trainers from NHS Grampian, local authorities and third sector organisations on a regular basis to develop skills and share best practice. We hope that shared connections will enable further courses and learning opportunities to develop to meet people s needs. This is the first brochure of its kind and as such very much a starter for ten, whose e-version can be regularly updated. We would love to hear from people who have courses which are not yet included: please contact pam.craig@nhs.net Happy learning Eleanor Bull Health Psychologist, NHS Grampian Eleanor.bull@nhs.net
