Robert Villanueva - Presenter IOOV Program Director, NAM Alameda County South, IOOV National Trainer of Trainers/Presenter Guy Qvistgaard - Collaborator John George Psychiatric Hospital, Chief Administrative Officer, San Leandro, CA Joe Rose - Moderator President, NAMI Alameda County South
Demonstrate positive patient s response to an IOOV presentation; Demonstrate psychiatric hospital staffs positive response to an IOOV presentation Demonstrate how IOOV and other NAMI programs can be integrated into a planned path to recovery.
We will Cover What is IOOV? Why IOOV Presentations Inpatient? Challenges with Inpatient Presentations at an Acute Care Hospital. Patient Evaluations. Hospital Administration & Clinician values observed. Patient Satisfaction Scores and funding. NAMI Program Paths - Post Hospitalization to Recovery and Stability
What is IOOV? NAMI In Our Own Voice (IOOV) unmasks mental illness, using speaker stories to illustrate the individual realities of living with mental illness. You gain a better understanding of what it is like to live with mental illness and stay in recovery. NAMI In Our Own Voice can change attitudes, preconceived notions and stereotypes regarding mental illness.
Why IOOV Presentations on the unit? It benefits patients to hear that recovery is possible from someone who has been where they are. With hope for recovery, patients are known to work better with clinical staff in their recovery process. Staff is exposed to individuals that are living in recovery and thriving in the community.
Challenges with Inpatient Presentations at an Acute Care Hospital. Some presenters my be apprehensive about making presentations inpatient May be an adjustment for some hospital staff. Pre and Post Evaluations are not used to complicated and time consuming for acute care patients. Single sheet Post-Presentation (front and back) Evaluation forms are passed out to patients when success, hopes, and dreams section is started.
Patient Evaluations Single sheet front and back evaluations forms post presentation are used. IOOV Presenters are usually responsible for administering the evaluations. At JGPH, hospital interns administer and collet the evaluations. The Occupational Therapy Manager at JGPH has abstracted some of the patient evaluations. Let s look at some of them!
We all share something in common and I agree of what they [Presenters] went through to overcome their dark days. I want to exit the hospital and stay sober and have a happy long life with lots of love. My favorite part was success, hopes and dreams because I want to be successful some time in my life if I can t what am I doing in life. I see what has happened to me and successes, hopes and dreams were my favorite parts. Thanks for coming [Presenters]. It s good to hear and see and talk to someone freely.
Hospital Administration and Clinician value observed. IOOV Presentations given to Hospital Senior Management and Clinical Staff before bring IOOV Presentations on to the units. Clinical staff perceives added value in working with most patients post IOOV Presentation. IOOV Presentations incorporated in the JGPH New Employee Orientation.

More Comments from Patients If one is well mentally they have the capability to achieve happiness, hopes and dreams. My favorite section of the presentation was successes, hopes and dreams because I have feelings of hopelessness. Thank you for being involved with people in here. It is very cool. I like NAMI activities. I wish to work this organization as a volunteer. Curious about NAMI s network and work with other mental health organizations.
