Tragedy should be utilized as a source of strength. No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful the experience is, if we lose our hope, that s our real disaster. Dalai Lama In SPES we never give up hope!
SPES is available throughout the country Working at a local, regional, national and international level with the support, information and towards attitude changes. We can do this through our contacts, helpline, education, meetings and self-help groups. We want to contribute to increased knowledge about suicide as a social and public health problem and counteract prejudices and taboos. We want to reduce the taboo and shame around issues dealing with mental illness and its ultimate consequence that someone take their life. We want to influence and collaborate with local governments to fulfill the assumed health statement on zero tolerance for suicide.
In Sweden at least 1500 people take their lives each year An average of four people take their lives every day. Suicide is the leading cause of death by men over 44 years. Suicide is the second leading cause of death by women under 44 years. Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people between years.
SPES provides support in grief The helpline is staffed by our specially experienced and skilled SPES members. It is for those who are related to when someone have taken their life. It is beneficial to talk with someone who has similar experience. There is always someone to talk to on the helpline. It is open every evening between 7 PM to 10 PM. The phone number is We need each other because it is only we who understand, who can support each other no matter how many years have passed since the day it happened. We have experienced grief, loss and the pain in our reality.
A Sweden free from suicide SPES have a regular interaction and contact with a number of national organizations and authorities. For example: Attityduppdraget (H)järnkoll, Attitydambassadörer Psykisk hälsa Nationellt Kompetenscentrum Anhöriga Socialstyrelsen SKL (Sveriges Kommuner och Landsting) Folkhälsomyndigheten Telefonsjälavården i Sverige SAMS Suicide Zero NSPH (Nationell Samverkan för Psykisk Hälsa) NASP (Nationellt centrum för suicidforskning och prevention av psykisk ohälsa) Stockholms Universitet

SAMS Cooperation for people in mourning Who are we? We are an umbrella organization for: Febe Network for parents who have lost a child The National Association for Widows and Widowers RAV National organization for relatives killed by violence SPES National Association for Suicide Prevention and support for those who lost someone Infants fund VIMIL We who lost someone in the middle of life VSFB We who lost children
SAMS What we do: Together we encounter hundreds of families in mourning each year, and provides support and dialogue. In addition to working with support for those who lost someone in suicide all organizations work actively with prevention and information. We coordinate light manifestations and arrange concerts where we together can honor our loved ones and give hope and belief in the future. In SAMS we share our experience through articles, films, information days and education. We also arrange seminars on the theme of sorrow and support to grievers.
SAMS What we want: We want to prove that we are a vital resource in the community that should be taken seriously. We try to improve conditions for those who lost a dear one and who because of grief need to be home from work. We believe that we should not have to fight for the right to compensation. Our vision is that people should have better knowledge of what grief is and how to respond in best way to those who mourn in a way that benefits everyone, both in the short and long term. It should be easy to find the support we offer.
