As the new FY13 14 president of the HIMSS National Capital Area Chapter, I hope you will consider stepping up to learn more and become more involved in the process of change, the dialog, and the support of our mission. HIMSS NCA's mission is to promote professional approaches to the development, operation, and improvement of healthcare information management systems that benefit the local healthcare community while working collaboratively with HIMSS National. In addition to the monthly networking and educational meetings (September, October, November, January, March, April and May the annual meeting), there are a host of other activities led by dedicated volunteers: advocacy, scholarships, mentoring, charity donation selection, webinars, HIMSS Young Professionals, and networking activities to name a few. Our goal is for each of you to be engaged in some way with HIMSS NCA Chapter this coming year by providing the programs, activities, and resources that meet your needs. To that end, I have provided the roles, names, addresses of our Board members here. We welcome your comments, suggestions, participation and support of our nearly 700 member chapter made up of individuals from across Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia. 3 HIMSS NCA Webinar Lunch Series By Eric Klos In , HIMSS NCA piloted a new lunchtime webinar program opportunity for its membership and stakeholders in the National Capital Area to complement its regular, third Thursday monthly meeting topics. Two webinar programs were held in January and May. Our two webinars focused on Mobile Health and Big Data, timely and relevant topics that drew an audience from all parts of the healthcare sector. These webinars were well received by our HIMSS NCA Community. Recognizing this as a new avenue for providing an educational opportunity to our members, we are expanding our webinar series in our year by holding 4 webinars throughout the year. This free lunchtime webinar serves as an opportunity for a deeper dive into the topic previously covered at the monthly meeting and is held two weeks following the regular monthly meeting. The schedule for our webinars in is; Date Wednesday, December 4 th, 2013 Wednesday, January 29 th, 2014 Wednesday, April 2 nd, 2014 Wednesday, June 4 th, 2014 Topic Delivering Quality of Care through Clinical Interoperability Digital Health Strategies, Communications and Engagement Program Health Information Exchanges (HIE) FedRAMP Providers and Certification These tentative topics preliminarily reflect the topics of the preceding monthly meeting. Our goal will be to provide a variation on these topics, as the title of the webinar program is ultimately determined in the course of webinar planning. Our webinar series is planned by a webinar subcommittee within the HIMSS NCA Programs Committee. Current committee members include; Eric Klos Chair, Peggy McShane, Chris Behrmann, Anthony Fung, Mark Silverberg, Barry Dickman, and Marcia DeFalco. The Blum Report by Dan Blum During National Health IT Week in September, the HIMSS community of more than 250 members from around the country convened at their Policy Summit in Washington DC. After the summit attendees went the hill to Pg. 3

4 visit their elected officials to promote key points that facilitate the use of HIT to improve healthcare in America. The 3 Congressional Asks that shaped the visits by HIMSS members are: 1. Congress should make the development and adoption of a consistent, nationwide patient data matching strategy, through government industry collaboration, a priority for the Administration. 2. Congress should require expedited efforts to align the EHR Incentive Program s quality reporting requirements across all federal reporting and incentive programs. HHS and other federal agencies should align Meaningful Use Program consistent clinical quality measures (CQMs) with other health IT compliance initiatives, including Version 5010, International Classification of Diseases, 10 th Edition (ICD 10), Physician Quality Reporting System programs (PQRS), EHR Incentive Program Pilot for Eligible Providers, e Reporting Pilot for Eligible Hospitals and Clinical Access Hospitals, Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program (IQR), and Medicare Shared Savings (ACO) Program. 3. To improve the quality of patient care, safety, and cost containment, Congress should exercise its oversight authority to ensure that the needed health IT data definition and transaction standards are implemented consistently and effectively nationwide, with needed infrastructure in place, to support the EHR to support the Meaningful Use Incentive Program Stages and the national healthcare transformation. Blum comment: If you don t know what all these acronyms are, you need to come to the Chapter meetings and ask questions!! WE ARE LOOKING FOR MENTORS: the HIMSS NCA chapter conducts the mentor program from January to May. It s a very rewarding opportunity for our chapter s members. We meet monthly to discuss a specific subject during the mentor program. The HIMSS NCA Chapter is considering a Washington DC focused program for the February meeting. 5 NCA website for additional information on the chapter sponsorship program: Spotlight HIMSS Opens Innovation Center in Cleveland The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society opened its 30,000 square foot Innovation Center on Oct. 8 as part of the Global Center for Health Innovation's ribbon cutting in downtown Cleveland. Full story is available here. Charity by Steven Erd The HIMSS NCA chapter engages in many forms of community service, including its Charity Award Program. Event and sponsorship proceeds are designated for charitable organizations serving the national area community. Consistent with the mission of HIMSS NCA, we support those serving the health needs of the community, preferably including projects with an information technology component. HIMSS NCA has supported, for example, an Outpatient Clinic serving the local uninsured population to fund a project leveraging IT to improve the healthcare of its patients. That $3,000 award was critical to helping an at risk population receive improved care with the implementation of an electronic health record. Awards will continue supporting charities in the greater D.C. metropolitan area. In keeping with the mission of HIMSS, we seek area organizations that will be using funds for a health or healthcare technology related endeavor. Applications were accepted through October 25, Awardees will be notified on or about November 4, 2013 and will be invited to receive the award at the November HIMSS NCA membership meeting. HIMSS NCA Chapter HIMSS Young Professionals (HYP) by Nadia Ramey This season the HIMSS Young Professionals committee has gotten off to a great start after its launch in the fall of HYP s presence in the community is growing with the newest generation of Health IT professionals and students and some of the most experienced leaders in the field. In September 2013, HYP made a splash in the District of Columbia by holding the first event of this year s program at 201 Bar on Capitol Hill. The networking event, held in conjunction with National Health IT Week, brought together a diverse audience of Health IT professionals with seasoned clinicians, mid and senior level Health IT professionals, and those interested in learning more about HIMSS and the Health IT field. The event provided an opportunity to network, exchange ideas, and ask questions in a casual setting designed specifically Pg. 5

6 for the burgeoning Health IT professional. With the support of HYP chairs Chris Behrmann and Nadia Ramey, HIMSS NCA Past President, Peggy McShane, the HIMSS NCA board and our sponsor ESAC Inc., this event was a success! Through this and other planned events, HYP is achieving its primary goal: to support professional development and networking for all Health IT professionals. Our base membership focuses on those members of the community that represent students, newcomers to the field of Health IT, and transitioning seasoned professionals, but all are welcome!
