1 Committee Reports Nominating Committee As we get closer to the November vote for nominees to fill board positions, we need to bear in mind that there are some qualifications which must be met. Let us all remember that our primary purpose is to stay sober, and help others to achieve sobriety. That help can come in many forms sponsoring someone (newbie or old timer), service at our home group, taking meetings into facilities, or just showing up consistently at meetings, making sure the lights are on and the coffee is made. Standing at the door, welcoming the newcomer and other members is also a vital part of our recovery. We would be grateful though, if you would prayerfully consider serving AA by becoming a member of the Metrolina Intergroup Steering Committee, helping to set the direction for AA in Charlotte and the surrounding areas. Listed below are positions that are open for election this November. If you will go online at and open the Handbook, you will see the duties for each position. And remember, you would come on as a co-chair of a committee or office, so you ve got a whole year to learn to do the job. Better still, go to some of the committee meetings. The days and times are listed in the 20/20. Please take the ballot to your home groups and encourage someone to please get involved in this extremely important service work. After you ve gotten some names on the ballot, bring it back to Intergroup and give to Sharon. Slots to be filled are: STEERING COMMITTEE OFFICERS Vice Chair Assistant Treasurer Assistant Secretary COMMITTEES Nominations co-chair Treatment Facilities co-chair Unity co-chair CPC/PI co-chair Corrections co-chair The below qualifications come from the Metrolina Intergroup By-Laws: It is mandatory that one of the Candidates for each office shall be one who has actively served on that committee during the past year; and that the Nominees for Chairperson and Treasurer have a minimum of five (5) years of continuous sobriety and the other offices have three (3) years of continuous sobriety and a record of active involvement in A.A.

2 Corrections Committee The Corrections Committee continues to grow and thrive. Interested AAs are encouraged to join. Turnout at the monthly committee meetings has been fantastic. We have been able to add another meeting for the women at Jail North on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:00. The MCSO jail staff is very grateful for the meetings we bring into their facilities as we provide a key component to the jail s treatment program. The committee continues its efforts to revive the pre-release program that assists AA inmates reentering society, and to encourage participation in the correspondence program which allows AAs to exchange letters with incarcerated alcoholics. We are hoping to offer a Corrections event & workshop in February of More information will follow. Our current commitment to the men and women housed in MCSO jails is as follows: MEN Jail Central (801 E. 4 th St., Charlotte 28202) Mondays at 8:00 p.m. Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. 2 nd, 4 th, and 5 th Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. WOMEN Jail North (5235 Spector Drive, Charlotte 28269) Fridays at 8:00 p.m. Wednesdays at 3:00 Interested AAs should reach out to Sandy or Evan for more information. There is an application process followed by a required orientation for approved volunteers. The Corrections Committee meets on the last Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Metrolina Intergroup office and attendance is strongly encouraged! What if I needed an a. A. meeting and there was none? There are over 63,357 A.A.s in confinement and over 2,432 prison groups throughout the United States and Canada. These meetings answer only a fraction of the need for more groups in correctional facilities all across the country. Many there reach for, but don t find the hand of A.A. In carrying the message inside a correctional facility, we are sharing our experience, strength, and hope with another alcoholic. We let our stories speak for themselves. Our audience is more interested in learning how to stay sober than in hearing how we got drunk, so we talk about our program of recovery with the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. 3 CPC/PI Greetings family and friends, I hope and pray this report finds everyone well and that you are enjoying your summer and managing to stay cool in this hot weather we are having. Once again it is time to update you on what CPC/PI is doing, and I am pleased and excited to fill you in. I am pleased to report that we have been blessed again with digital billboards around the Charlotte area; one sponsor has billboards on I-85 between I-77 and South Blvd. and another on I-485 south of Wilkinson Blvd. near the airport. We also have a donor whose location is at the Epicenter which I am very happy about and praying that this one comes through. In all I believe we have about eight (8) donors who will display our AA message on their billboards. July 12 th CPC/PI hosted a coffee hour with a few lawyers from law enforcement agencies at Amelie s Uptown. The purpose of the event was to let them know what AA is and what it isn t; and also to let them know of our availability for those in need. We hope to host further events like this. This fall the committee intends to provide Big Books and literature to Mecklenburg County libraries, and also host a CPC/PI workshop here at the Intergroup office. Treatment Committee Treatment Committee members carry approximately 30 meetings each week into various facilities in our local Charlotte area. Several home groups organize a few of these meetings, making them a service opportunity for rotating home group members. If you have a home group, a sponsor, and one year of continuous sobriety, join us the 2nd Saturday of each month at our Intergroup office. We meet at 9:30 a.m. Our monthly meeting is more than just an orientation. It is how, as a committee, we fellowship and share our own service work experiences. In addition to carrying meetings, we've recently added a Bridging the Gap sub-committee whose responsibility it is to ensure clients and patients from various facilities receive support as they transition from being institutionalized to attending AA meetings in our area. 4 Unity The Unity Committee has had a very successful We have hosted three different successful events to support the Metrolina Intergroup Association. Founders Day Celebration was held June 16 th at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte. We had a great turnout! Everyone enjoyed plenty of excellent food and fellowship as we commemorated the 83 rd anniversary of the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous. Special thanks to our speaker Stuart W., to Myers Park United Methodist Church, and to all who participated and volunteered to make the event a success! Previously, we celebrated the move of the Intergroup office to a new location on Elizabeth Avenue with an open house in March to give everyone in the fellowship an opportunity to see our new space. In addition, the annual Metrolina Intergroup Picnic was held on April 14 th at Park Road Park. Our next planned events are the Alkathons which will take place at Christmas (December 24 th - 25 th) and New Year (December 31 st -January 1 st ). The Unity Committee is making plans for another successful Alkathon event. More information will be provided prior to the event with further details. As always, we need volunteers to help us! Consequently, we sometimes take this one great gift for granted. We forget that, should we lose our unity, the millions of alcoholics who still do not know might never get their chance. I know that is a pretty broad question, but it is something we all need to think about. For the past five years, we have focused on pulling out of debt and recovering our prudent reserve. Having accomplished that, where do we go from here? Currently, the Treatment Facilities Committee is taking 28 weekly meetings into various treatment centers. The Corrections committee is taking several meetings into both the men s and women s jails, and two different prisons. The CPC/PI Committee is working diligently at educating the public and professional community on our program. Our Unity committee has hosted three wonderful events this year. All of this requires not only willing volunteers, but money to provide literature and cover costs. For the past few months, contributions have been down. Our expenses have exceeded our income. While we are still financially secure and there is no need for panic, it is time to make some decisions. Do we want to continue to offer (and possibly expand on) our services, or do we want to cut them back? The choice is yours.
