6 Article 3. HUMAN RIGHTS Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. 16 Article 20. HUMAN RIGHTS (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association. (2) No one may be compelled to belong to an association. 17 CIVIL RIGHTS The 14 th Amendment All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. 18 6

7 1911 CIVIL RIGHTS The first large convention of Mexicans Americans to organize against social injustice, El Primer Congreso Mexicanista, meets in Laredo, Texas CIVIL RIGHTS The National Congress for Hispanic Mental Health Creating the momentum for Tenemos Voz 20 PATIENT RIGHTS Choice of Providers and Plans Statement of the Right Consumers have the right to a choice of health care providers that is sufficient to ensure access to appropriate high quality health care. 21 7

8 PATIENT RIGHTS Participation in Treatment Decisions Statement of the Right Consumers have the right and responsibility to fully participate in all decisions related to their health care. Consumers who are unable to fully participate in treatment decisions have the right to be represented by parents, guardians, family members, or other conservators. 22 PATIENT RIGHTS Respect and Nondiscrimination Statement of the Right Consumers have the right to considerate, respectful care from all members of the health care system at all times and under all circumstances. An environment of mutual respect is essential to maintain a quality health care system. 23 RIGHTS TO LIVELIHOOD The Human Right to Livelihood and Land is the human right of all women, men, youth and children to a dignified and productive livelihood which enables them to live in peace, security, justice and dignity. 24 8

E ncourage the frail and sad, C onsole the lost, the weak. And be T ruthful when you speak. 31 RESPECT Ten tips on showing respect As a leader, how many of these do you use successfully? 1. Listen 2. Eye contact 3. Repeating back 4. Focus 5. Ask for permission 6. Find an item to agree on 7. When you don t agree, ask questions 8. Show interest (nod, smile) 9. Present your point of view as another way of looking at things. 10. Ask their opinion 32 Self respect SELF RESPECT Proper respect for oneself as a human being; Regard for one's own standing or position To give respect to someone else, you have to learn to respect yourself

12 SELF RESPECT How do we get to this point in our journey? First understand that we are human beings with certain inclinations, tendencies, emotions and a lived experience. 34 SELF RESPECT Taking care of ourselves Our health Addressing all of our personal needs such as housing, nutrition, spiritual, exercise and medical care. 35 SELF RESPECT Asking for assistance should not affect our self respect or bring about shame; the humbleness shown by our willingness to ask is an asset that we need to recognize even when other people cannot

13 SELF RESPECT If we lose love and self respect for each other, this is how we finally die. 17 RESPONSIBILITY As individuals it is our responsibility to seek out professionals or our peers for help and support. Counselors or Therapist Family Recovery Meetings 49 RESPONSIBILITY People with behavioral health challenges have a responsibility to be involved in all issues that affect their total health and to participate in the improvement and development of their social status. 50 RESPONSIBILITY We also have a responsibility to our behavioral health community. 18 RESPONSIBILITY We have a responsibility to create organizations that serve the needs of those who are dealing with similar behavioral health challenges. 20 REPRESENTATION Needed at the local, state and national level which affect the well being, health and livelihood of self and community. Our voice is the difference on how services are identified, developed and utilized. 58 REPRESENTATION Service Delivery development implementation and utilization are governed in three different ways. Policy Regulation Standards 59 REPRESENTATION Local level What directly affects your quality of life is where you should be represented. Start seeking representation at Local Peer Support groups, community organizations all relevant state agencies that provide support and services to Behavioral Health Clients and Communities

21 REPRESENTATION There are many places where we should be represented Professional boards Commissions Focus groups Policy oversight committees 61 REPRESENTATION Participate Your input and participation in these groups will bring about change. Your participation standards will improve and move the system to nurture quality of care that preserves dignity for people and communities. 62 Awareness REPRESENTATION Make people aware that things move slowly through bureaucracies and to not get discouraged. Persistence Brings about change

22 REPRESENTATION Instant feedback Helps improve and develop better programs. Consumer engagement Legitimizes consumer need and consumer voice with in the Mental Health Service delivery system. 64 EMPOWERMENT Empowerment is the permission giver. Empowerment is the permission to attend groups. Empowerment is the permission to get better. 65 EMPOWERMENT Empowerment is the permission to act on what is right. Empowerment is where thoughts and actions, feelings and perceptions spontaneously occur

VISION Tenemos Voz envisions a culturally competent and recoveryoriented mental health system in which Latinos with behavioral health challenges and their families can have equal access to quality care that allows them to live full and meaningful lives
