2 Today s Plan Provide overview of the Family Drug Court model and the importance of engagement and retention as a cross-systems and joint-responsibility in Family Drug Court (FDC). Provide insight of engagement in FDCs from a judicial perspective. Define/discuss gender responsive treatment specifically, Men s Integrated Treatment Defining Family Drug Courts & Engagement as a Joint-Responsibility Phil Breitenbucher, M.S.W. 5 6 What is a Family Drug Court? Common Ingredients of Family Drug Courts Devoted to cases of child abuse and neglect that involve substance abuse by parents or other caregivers Purpose is the safety and welfare of children while giving parents the tools they need to become sober, responsible caregivers Multi-disciplinary team; collaborative effort between CWS, Court, and Drug Treatment Services Non-adversarial environment Comprehensive and workable case plans; coordinated services based on comprehensive needs assessments 7 System of identifying families Earlier access to assessment and treatment services Increased management of recovery services and compliance Consistent responses to participant p behavior Increased judicial oversight Cross-systems collaboration 8 2

3 Engagement Retention Engagement: the participation necessary to obtain optimal benefits from an intervention (Prinz & Miller, 1996) and is: An ongoing process, which starts at Intake and Assessment and continues through aftercare Responsive to changing needs and situations Seek to remove barriers, enhance motivation. Joint-responsibility and collaborative effort About long-term recovery Retention is the result of keeping clients in treatment. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage CLIENT ADULT DRUG COURT Adult or parent who is charged TRADITIONAL DEPENDENCY COURT Children who have been abused and or neglected FAMILY DEPENDENCY TREATMENT COURT Both the adult and the children who are affected CLIENT GENDER Majority males Majority females Majority females TYPE OF PROCEEDING COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT FAMILY INVOLVEMENT Criminal The tx, skill training, developmental& health needs of the parent are assessed Nuclear & extended family members are often included in the case plan Civil (parent may face criminal charges in another court) The health, safety, & developmental needs of each child are assessed Extended family helps provide care and supervision of children All are civil, but some may also be criminal Both Spouse, SO, father figure involved in tx process, extended family as 11 appropriate Fathers as a Marginalized Party in CWS Largest percentage of child victims of abuse and neglect come from households headed by single mothers Dependency proceedings frequently focus on reunifying children with their mothers Over 80% of caseworkers are women CWS treat fathers as legal strangers to their children and is more mother-focused Fathers and men are excluded within the policy, programs, and practice of child welfare; the issue is a systemic one that touches on multiple points Source: Advocating for Non-resident Fathers in Child Welfare Court Cases. 4 How can we increase our numbers of fathers in our FDC? A Model 1. Increase the number of father s entering the FDC 2. Decrease the number of father s leaving the FDC, or Inflow FDC Outflow 3. Do Both! 9 How Men Respond to Trauma Trauma-informed Services Trauma-informed services: Men suffer abuse Suffer alone with the abuse Many become abusers Tk Take the trauma into it account Avoid triggering trauma reactions and/or traumatizing the individual Adjust behavior of counselors, other staff and organization to support individual s coping capacity Male abuse victims tend to identify with the abuser as a means of reclaiming personal power and attempting to secure safety 33 Allow survivors to manage their trauma symptoms successfully so that they are able to access, retain, and benefit from the services Source: Fallot, Roger, PhD & Maxine Harris, PhD. 10 Addiction: What We Have Learned Men in Treatment Brain chemistry Stages of change Motivational interviewing vs. confrontation Client-centered Strength-based Solution-oriented Relapse prevention Managing a chronic disease We rarely acknowledge to men that the therapeutic process may be incompatible with how they were raised It can be remarkably healing to place their addiction and recovery within the context of their socialization as men Men in Treatment Men in Treatment While all men have relationships, and these get some attention in treatment, we do not typically focus on men s relationships - helping them develop the skills necessary to have healthy relationships. Sexuality is rarely addressed directly in addiction treatment, despite being a fundamental aspect of male and female behavior

11 Men in Treatment Helping Men Recover Spirituality was traditionally a core element in most addiction treatment programs But has been marginalized since CBT became the predominant therapeutic approach Inspired by Dr. Covington s groundbreaking Helping Women Recover (released in January 2011 from Jossey-Bass) Authors: Dr. Stephanie Covington, Dan Griffin, and Rick Dauer Community and Criminal Justice versions Four Modules Self Relationships Sexuality Spirituality Resource Questions & Discussion Recovery is more than sobriety.
